I was in a production of this, but the set was one building not two side by side. You could actually see inside the apartments and the back wall with pictures and everything on them. The building had pigeon poop on it! The set was in six sections and had to be put up with a crane. It was a great experience for a 19 yr. old in summer stock. This guy probably does the best version of this song I've ever heard!
I think Street Scène is the Most important opera in USA : Musically (influence of popular and ambitious musical forms, mixing European roots and American roots by a genius"Chameleon" composer Kurt Weill, the great Weill ). And the lyrics are wonderful mixed pure poetry great dramatic progression with eternal and universal thematic.
LYRICS: At night when everything is quiet The old house seems to breathe a sigh Sometimes I hear a neighbor snoring Sometimes I can hear a baby cry Sometimes I can hear a staircase creaking Sometimes a distant telephone Oh, and when the night settles down again This old house and I are all alone Lonely house, lonely me Funny with so many neighbors How lonely it can be Oh lonely street, lonely town Funny, you can be so lonely With all these folks around I guess there must be something I don't comprehend Sparrows have companions Even stray dogs have a friend The night for me is not romantic Unhook the stars and take them down I'm lonely in this lonely house, in this lonely town
Brilliant Kip, Beautifully sung and acted! Merry Christmas to ye all, hope ye have a magical Christmas and a magnificent New Year, All the Best, Niamh & Tommy ;-) ;-)

It's a bit heavy for someone playing a teenage boy, no? Very well sung but not my favorite version because I think it sounds better with a lighter feel that lends itself more to the character
It is quite a common opinion, I've taken this piece into my repertoire recently, and having a much heavier voice than the regular broadway/MT tenor (wich I'm most certainly not) I can assure that it isn't the easiest piece (specially for those tricky passagio and piani notes) yet quite beautiful and not as dynamic-required as one might think, as long as musical intepretation is the matter it is possible, as long as the dramatic aspect is our discussion I see no reason why a teenage boy (just like myself, and what I don't understand the character to be) cannot have a full resonant, dark and heavy voice.
The production was in the late 1990s, I think. I saw it on TV (Bravo) three times in 1998. If they'd showed it ten times I'd have watched it ten times! A magical, brilliant production.
Kurt Weill called it "American Opera" sort of a hybrid between Opera and Broadway. It's not sung through and is a bit of a mish mash of musical styles not intended to be integrated, but somehow it works.
He has an outstanding tenor voice BUT his voice is being amplified here for SURE! He is a heavy lyric tenor but stil lyric and the sound is too loud for him to not be amplified at all. Plus it sounds amplified anyhow.
He is amazing but GOOD GOD THAT SET. The detail is incredible
Yeah, it's a very convincing New York street scene. I always loved this song and never heard anyone do it as well as this guy.

Oh, and when the night settles down again

in a couple of weeks i will have to be performing this same number myself too. problem is, i get stage fright... please pray for my success...TT_TT
Gary Krogh how did it go
Did you succeed?
I’m guessing it didn’t go well lmao
Bravo!!
Performing this up the octave for an audition. Should be very fun and creepy in a soprano voice!
WHO. MADE. THIS. SET

WannabeBackbencher hes not a teen tho

What year is this? He's been around at least 30 years. I met him in 1992

what type of genre would this be?
K classical musical theatre
K or Opera (American Opera)
Kimberly Nichols thanks!
This song would be considered an aria and it’s from the operetta “Street Scene”
Kurt Weill called it "American Opera" sort of a hybrid between Opera and Broadway. It's not sung through and is a bit of a mish mash of musical styles not intended to be integrated, but somehow it works.

chosentenore - so let me get this straight-are you suggesting this is amplified? Why not come right out and say it, maybe three times?
any opinions on whether it was amplified, @chosentenore?
I can't stand the pitch bending, but he has a good voice when he sings in tune
gliding between notes is pretty common for opera ballads
He's a good singer but the high notes are rather pushed.
