- Buddy Young flips during the 1970 Motor Trend 500 NASCAR Grand National race at Riverside International Raceway. Buddy slammed into the turn one wall at over 100 mph and barrel rolls roughly 13 times before coming to rest in the infield. Buddy lost control of his '69 Ford Torino after hitting an oil slick laid down by Dick Brooks' blown engine.

Buddy Young was my Auto Mechanics teacher at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church VA in 1974-75, and got me my first job at Jim McKay Chevrolet in Fairfax VA. He told me about the big wreck where his car flipped. He said when he woke up, he was strapped to a gurney on a helicopter. All he saw was the sky above him and he though he was dead going to heaven. He rode a Harley-Davidson sportster to school back then. He had some in the class helping him build a race car in 1975. Lots of the guys at McKays knew Buddy well.
Also Had him at GCM from 76-78. Told me the last thing he remembered was pulling his arm back into the car when it started to Roll.

We both remember buddy for his stories his good nature and his advice

It was financially undoable.
We got out dog from him as a puppy. He lived up the street. Roy Hord was across from us Les Richter further down by golf course.
Cheap bastard never spent a dime on irrigation or grass seed.
Read he only passed in 2014. Even continued racing albeit for a short period only.
He even made one more Cup Series start the fall Rockingham race the same year as this crash. So yeah he did survive the crash though is doubtful that the crash caused his death in 2014.

I remember seeing him race and cheering for him at Old Dominion Speedway in the late 60's and early 70's. I want to say he drove a black and gold chevy #13..

We were at that race. Didn't see that wreck, but saw the horrible Cook crash directly in front of us in turn nine.
I was at the race (but in the infield) and I didn't see the wreck, but I've seen pictures of the car. There's no way he should have survived that accident.
Yes, i remember hearing. Didn't Pearson hit Cook in the rear, sending him straight into the blunt end of the wall?

That old Riverside track was a tough old girl. The joe Weatherly crash just looked brutal. And AJ Foyt flying through the air was spooky. And, of course, this flip.
Joe Weatherly was killed at Riverside. I think it was in 1963

This is an incredible find! At the end of the flip you can see the #43 of Larry Mann sliding into the wreckage. Later in the race, Mann was killed when his car crashed through the guardrail and flipped 3 times.
@@NascarAllOut I did notice that...imagine if Larry plowed into Nelson's car and knocked himself out of the race. Maybe he'd have lived to become a race winner and began the legacy of the number 43 in NASCAR. But instead he gave us all a reason why we shouldn't paint our race cars green...
