LEANDER VS OXFORD UNIVERSITY | PRE BOAT RACE FIXTURE

- We head to the Tideway to race against Oxford University over a section of the Boat Race course, starting at Putney, finishing at the Chiswick Steps. This time, we provided a better opponent to race against than in the Cambridge fixture, but still, it seems we did not race how we intended. We were dropped off the start, almost losing a length, clawed back with some good steering from our cox and were not able to hold off a late charge from Oxford in the closing strokes of the piece.
Close pieces like this provide scenarios for us as athletes to put ourselves under pressure and see how we can perform on the day of a race. Sometimes you can perform very well under training without any pressure but as soon as there is some pressure in a race environment some athletes can respond negatively. With the UK race calendar not packed full of races to gain this experience we try to get as much as we can and racing Cambridge and Oxford is an amazing opportunity. I must say the 360 camera was a great investment
Class footage some of the best yet! Great dramatic music also. Was glued to the screen
I usually post a stupid comment saying how my 2k is so quick that I'm done after 1000m or something, but have to say that this was excellent, and I hope the actually boat race follows this piece of cinema as an example. Good stuff, exciting to watch.

Good race. Looked like a close one all the way down the course. Looks like they jumped you off the start from the vid I shot of the start but great effort to get back. Some good Yam going on there!

Best use of that camera I've seen. We were right there with you, every stroke. It helped tell the story rather than just a flash bit of kit. A perfect use for it. Great footage Cam, and I really thought you were going to take them up to Hammersmith [i didn't read the description as I didn't want to spoil the result.]

Unfortunate of the piece, But great video! Some time ago i think you mentioned a video idea to show your whole boat line up? I love that idea! Maybe you could make a video of who is in which seat And what's their task? Anyway beatiful video and keep yamming 🍠!

Yup it was a 360 camera, I use a combo of the insta 360 one x and the gopro fusion!

Great footage! I know you changed crews a bit, but can you spot any major differences between Oxford and Cambridge now you've raced them both? Nice shots of my club just beyond Hammersmith bridge too ;-)
Not really to be honest! But both crews have improved!
Do you have any footage of your race against Cambridge with Cracknell in their crew? I don't think you could post it at the time. I bet it would be a popular video!

It's a good question Paul, maybe I'll make a video about it! I reckon it's going to be pretty close this year with the edge to Cambridge
Do you guys ever get coaching on how to row? There's a lot you could be doing to make your boat faster
Our coach coaches us everyday. Unfortunately this was a poor showing of how we row outside of training. What sound you recommend? And can you see the differences between this and the reading head? That was a better showing but obviously still needs work
@@CameronBuchan I've seen a few of your videos, I have to FF past the 'ah-yeah' type stuff, the pairs rowing and the eight all look very up and down (like you're on the ergo) you could get more round the pin - have a look at these guys - www.felixdieu.com/Rowing/2015/The-Kiwi-Pair/i-TfSKrPs
Wouldn't anyone suffer by comparison against those guys? The Kiwi Pair was probably the greatest combination in rowing -- arguably in all sport. Hamish Bond could make a 6'8" guy look like he was rowing short by comparison. Eric Murray was world class at every distance from 1000 meters to a Half Marathon.
Also, Leander has probably fielded that VIII -- at most -- five or six times all season. And that might have been only their third or fourth row on that stretch of the Thames. That is very difficult water to row if you aren't used to it.

When you say the ah yeah type stuff what do you mean? Just looking for feedback so I can improve! Also, how much more round the pin would you say? Keen to have feedback from all angles!
Definitely our biggest shock being the first time on the Thames since last year! But still have to be able to row on it!

Cameron try to reach further forward at the catch for a longer stroke and more power over noticed that yours is much shorter than your other crew members
Appreciate the feedback Will! Although I think there is a little bit of the fish eye not doing me any justice 😂 the telemetry definitely says I'm rowing shorter than I should though!

Absolutely amazing video! And no spoken word just music and action until 11:13, I stopped. How did you direct the camera while racing so hard? Did you program it to pivot or to recognize Oxford boat in motion? Pure magic! You have a job in Hollywood, when your rowing career is over :-).
it is 360° camera. It films everything around and then you manually select scenes
It is a 360 camera like above mentioned! It films everything in a ball and then you choose what it films on software after!
