  • A vlog of me and my PVM-14n5u adventures. Fixed a lot of stuff on dis bugga which was given to me by @6tanks (Twitter.) Free too! Forever grateful.
    IMPORTANT!!! Forgot to add in the vid that the header label silkscreen for CN403 on the A-Board is reversed! Also, the jumper wires must be added to the sync circuit on the Q-Board. Though, I would also just add the jumpers for the remote circuit as it's easy enough.

    This is one of my favourites videos of all time. Stylishly shot. Unique. Fun to watch. Informative. Satisfying to see the beginning and then the end result. What's more I was actually lucky enough to acquire exactly the same monitor very cheap in similar shape with a smashed case and fixed/restored/RGB modded it using the same techniques shown in the video. Can't ask for much more! 😁

    Wow, incredible restoration. From the bezel cracks, Lego & cement, to the actual hardware modification itself. Watched every minute of it. Love the attention to detail with the custom connector, and the fact you went out of your way to get the Sony badge from some used speakers to finish it up. Couldn’t have been easy to find all the right components and put it together start to finish. I just picked up this PVM locally. I have to admit the picture looks amazing even with composite and s-video but I’ll have to see if I’m up for this mod. Bookmarked this vid. I’m sure I’ll be returning to it again in future. @@The_SegaHolic Mod worked! Actually didn't get a picture or sound at all at first and I could have sworn I did everything right. I then started looking at the silkscreen realized that my 20n5u Qboard was missing jumpers JW1306 and JW1328 from the factory (yours had them which is why you didn't mention them as needed as part of the mod) - only 1306 is needed since we aren't using remote - just something to consider if you do the seemingly hours of SMT soldering and you don't get an image or sound haha. 1306 being missing knocks out everything but sync I believe as it has to do with controlling the transistors that enable audio R, G, and B. Maybe that will help someone else in a similar situation!

      But all the internals are working fine.. A beautiful picture. I need to try to find the plastic black rivets as all those were exploded out word from being dropped in shipping I surprise the monitor works I will try to use your method to save the bezel on my monitor But if it cannot be saved do you know of any sources Where I could find a replacement it does not have to be the exact same model just fit I just want to keep the monitor safe the whole reason I got it was play my old arcade games I have a between 20 and 25 arcade boards

      @The_SegaHolic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@selfelected3832 Nice, I need to get into arcade boards. But yeah, just use scrap Lego, and if you don’t have Lego, you can just build up the plastic just by using the ABS cement. Again, you can get that in the 5-7 dollar range at Home Depot or Lowes. It’ll take about a week to fully cure if you lay it on thick and do several layers of cement. It’s super strong though, like I demo in the vid. You’ll have ZERO worries.

    Awesome video! I'd seen the GitHub tutorial you also have linked where they do a lot simpler version of the Qboard - basically just two 75 ohm resistors, so now you have me considering doing the full upgrade..... Not sure if I'd notice the difference between buffered and unbuffered RGB to make it worth the additional complexity 🤔

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually not that much more complex, but just more work! LOL. There are mistakes in that Github TUT though that I picked up on. But here's something to consider:
      electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/591838/is-a-buffered-signal-less-prone-to-interference
      Difference of opinions there about buffereing/noise, but I did notice the picture is the cleanest I have out of all the CRT's I have. Could be the RF shields and whatnot, but if you don't try this, you'll always that the nagging question that just maybe the picture will be better if it's bufferred. LOL. Anyways, thanks for dropping a line and commenting. Really appreciate it.

      @@The_SegaHolic Thanks for the video! Gonna help me immensely. For me it comes down to availability of discontinued parts. As I'm planning to do the simplified Q board mod - do you mind sharing what mistakes did you notice in the Github tut?

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@corvusfrugilegus9778 As you can see, you don't need original parts. I've listed all the part numbers so you can get them from Mouser, Digi-Key, and eBay (for that one part).
      What's wrong with the TUT is if you look a the first picture on the Q-Board, where it shows the 75ohm resistor placement. That is totally wrong. You need to place the resistor in the place where it's originally inteneded (where he says to put the jumper- ie, the red line), and place the jumper wire where he has the resistor. He has it flipped.
      Also, you need to add the jumper and 75ohm resistor for the Sync line.

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, just do everything from the inside. No sanding. just use clamps like I did to make surebthe cracks are squeezed together tight enough, and there will be minimal evidence of a crack. I’m on Twitter @The_SegaHolic if you need further help or questions later. Just DM. 🤙👍 Also, make sure to put in all the jumper wires on the Q Board. Something I forgot to mention on the video. fiddling with the q-board smd parts is the most time comsuming part, but id say theres nothing really difficult about this mod, everything has been going very smoothly, just waiting for parts to arrive from ebay
    as my monitor is an SSM it didnt come with Line B, so i added that as well

    I have a PVM-14N5MDE. Is there any difference between that and the PVM-14N5U regarding following the steps for this mod? Because my monitor looks exactely like yours, i suspect it's a region thing? (I'm from Europe)
    Basically my question, can i follow your mod and have success?:)

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  ปีที่แล้ว

      The PVM-14N5MDE is part of the models on the Service Manual that I have linked. All of the various models from the world are listed. If you go to page 72 and 78, you can see the tables comparing what is missing vs the other models. In fact, if you pause here in the video:
      th-cam.com/video/0gxr0i5_1_s/w-d-xo.html
      You can see that all the "PVM-14n5's" Q Boards from all regions are exactly the same.
      If you look at page 72, the only thing different on the A Board from the PVM-14N5MDE to the PVM-14N5U is R024, which is probably a resistor to tell the micom what region the unit is.
      So YES, this mod detailed here is 99.99% going to work. I only say 99.99% cause there might be the very slight chance it doesn't, since I haven't seen it myself.

      Just refer to the service manual to see what's missing on both the Q and A boards. Refer to this guide: github.com/phrederick/Sony-SSM-14NXX-SSM-20NXX-RGB-Modification where I got the tactile switch and BNC jack part numbers.
      Though there's some errors on the Q-Board on there. I'd just do the full population.
      Or you may have your own plans! Anyways, thanks for commenting.

    Hi, I saw that you didn't need to discharge the tube to service on the monitor! Is it not necessary to do the procedure?

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You HAVE TO! You may get shocked and hurt badly. You can unplug and wait a day as that will discharge most of 5he energy. But it is necessary to do a discharge procedure just in case.

    17:28 i didnt want to remove the picture tube for better access so i cut from the outside, and i didnt have any tools suitable so i used a old soldering iron, and that was a huge mistake plastic melts and then you need to scrape the melted plastic off the front panel for an hour before the sticker can lay flat
    also doing the cutouts on the sticker is absolute nightmare, basically impossible
