Hi Cam - I first heard your grandfathers music on the John Peele radio show in England nearly 30 years ago, and I never forgot the Kimbrough name (even in that pre-internet search age). He was a remarkable artist and it’s brilliant to see that gift passed down to you. Thanks for sharing these lessons.

As someone with a musical foundation in rap, I really appreciate your videos. Took me a long time to find my way back to blues, especially being a Mexican from California. I’ve found myself connecting with Hill Country Blues especially with the rhythmic and lyrical similarities to rap, but it’s hard to find lessons on the style. Thank you very much sir

Cam, thanks for this lesson and thanks for your humility regarding how long it took you to get this down. I have felt discouraged by the struggle but knowing that someone who plays as well as you had to put in the hours to get this style down, well, that helps. Also, let's hear for it technology. It's 2023 and a random blues fan in Wisconsin can stumble across videos from a guy in Northern Mississippi who happens to be the grandson of Junior Kimbrough and is a hell of a player himself and offers up lessons on TH-cam.

Even though I'm a fiddle player, I appreciate what you share. There is ALWAYS something to learn. One thing I thought, when you said you woke up and it was 'there' and you could play it. Part of it muscle memory, but part of it - maybe - is the melody/drone... whatever you wanna call it... ;-)... floating around in your head. You can't play it if you can't sing it. So the combo of muscle memory and the 'sound/melody' itself... is the Cosmic Combo... thanks for making the time to share. :) Always enjoyable!!!

    Hi Cam,
I had the pleasure of knowing your Grandfather Junior Kimbrough back in 1982 when I was living with R.L. Burnside that summer. I got a chance to play with him at some juke joints around Holly Springs, and at his house outside town. He also made great homebrew. Junior was a class person, and fun musician to be around. Dave Evans from Memphis recently sent a CD my way he recorded at Junior's house that summer of 82 with me playing harp alongside Junior, George Scales on bass, and Calvin Jackson on drums. R.L. was there clowning around.
After I left that summer R.L., and I played, and toured together for 12 years between 82 and 94. I played mostly harp, but guitar some too. Sitting in with him several times in 99 was very cool. And we remained friends until he passed away. Unfortunately partly because I lived in Europe for 7 years I never saw Junior after the summer of 82. R.L. would let me know things, but it's been a big regret that I wasn't able to do more to help get gigs like with R.L. who I'm on his 2 MC RECORDS CD's with Acoustic Stories, and Well...Well...Well....
But, I'm sure glad I was able to meet, and play with Junior Kimbrough. He asked always treated me like I belonged--right alongside him. Pretty fine of Mr. David Junior Kimbrough really. RIP.
    Good luck,
    Jon Beckley Morris

Thanks for these tips. I have been struggling with alternating bass picking for years and seems like I should have started simple just like you showed. I’m glad I stumbled upon this. I was a fan of your grandads and the hill country blues.

I am from "The Shoals" area of Alabama and wasn't introduced to Junior's music until around 2006, when I bought The Black Keys album Chulahoma. "My Mind is Ramblin" shook me. I had to know where this song came from and I discovered that we were practically neighbors in the Sonic Cosmos. I found it odd and humbling that in my search for great music, I didn't need to do anything more than just listen out my windows. Much love and appreciation for the musicians that came from this part of the world.
