I've bought all the toys, and played or owned all the fancy option rich guitars. After a 3 year (very very expensive) quest. I've learned 2 things. A piece a gear will never make you a better guitar player and 2. Simple is King. My Gibson LP R9, Gibson Explorer 70s, Friedman BE-Deluxe, JCM800, and few nice purpose built pedals is all I will ever need. I do also own and enjoy the Quad Cortex. Now, instead of shopping, I practice 4hrs a day. Sold, traded, or about to sell / trade all the other $30K in "cutting edge" gear I have absolutely no use for. (Side Note) I also have a Epiphone LP Custom. It's not just as good as the Gibson Custom Shop, but it is absolutely as good as any of the Gibson USA Les Paul guitars I've owned.
I agree with this, I went down the rabbit hole to an extent but the gear you can commonly aquire is good enough to do the job and my epiphones are right there with my Gibsons
I totally think the same, practice is the best way to improve you as a guitarist and musician. The only thing I have done is buy a boutique amp and sell my two old crappy one, I know the amp I have bought is not able to make a better guitarist it just make me more satisfied about my sound and it helps me to play better but it doesn't make me a better musician

I had a very unique set up as my first amp. My drummers dad was a keyboard player in the 60’s in a band called The Denims. They hit their height just before the British Invasion playing gigs with Ricky Nelson and even the great Jimi Hendrix as well as many others. When my buddy and I started playing I couldn’t afford an amp so I used a super distortion pedal into his dads Leslie 825 keyboard amp. The slow spinning rotor and baffle in the middle gave the amp and my guitar the most beautiful chorus sound.

Recording or practicing with headphones is like stepping into your own realm of sonic bliss; without all the roar in the room. Love it! Amps have come so far as well. The I/O options make some models super versatile. I’ve not tried a Driftwood. Perhaps some day. What did I start recording with? In the 80s I had a Peavey VTX Classic twin, which I did NOT know how to use. I also had a diy fuzz box, made by a friend, that did give me some crunch. that got me excited about guitar tone possibilities. I recorded it into a cassette player and then eventually, I got another cassette player and learned how to simulate multi track one-take recordings. I started playing in 1998 with a Japanese Fender Strat (which I still have and play often) and a Peavey Rage 158. Eventually upgraded to a Fender ‘59 Bassman Reissue (still have a love this amp), and a Metal Zone. I now have a stack of amps, a crowded pedalboard, and a bunch of guitars, but every once in a while I’ll plug my strat into the MT-2 and into the ‘59 Bassman just for them nostalgia feels.
The Rage and Metal Zone were the ultimate combo in '98! I added a Peavey Envoy to my Rage and Zone in '99 to make a mini-stack of terrible tone... But back then, I couldn't afford a 5150 or a Mesa. Moreover, it was a time when eBay was at its infancy, Reverb didn't exist, and Guitar Center locations were few and far between (and they didn't advertise used gear).

I combine an old Line 6 Vetta with a Peavey XXX for an absolutely MASSIVE metal tone. Lots of customization and tonal shaping. I think the future is pure digital (ask all the big names solely using Axe-FX for everything), but tube amps are still cool to noodle with if you have the money and space.

1st amp was a Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12 in the early 90s. Wouldn’t get drowned out by my drummer and I’m sure I drove all my family and siblings crazy playing it at home 😂
haha i had a peavey rage 158 and a boss metal zone, the classic beginners reciepe for garbage sounding setup 😂🎸..i was so disappointed that the build in distortion sounded much better than the metal zone. i stayed oldschool, analog real (tube) gear since then because the overly excessive digital hype never convinced me. so many famous artists switching back from axe & co to good old jcm 800 with boost, i love to see that real gear is on a comeback right now. cheers 👍
I started with a knock off stratocaster from Zellers and a line 6 tube tone 2x12. That sucked so badly I didn't play electric for years. I finally decided to get back into it in 2018 and now I've got some nice gear and have been steadily progressing in skill ever since.
In 88' I got a Kramer Striker and Marshall Model 5005 Lead 12 Master Volume 1x10 Combo. Had to get a dist also. Finally in 91' got a great amp! A Peavey Bravo 1x12" all tube amp and put a V30 in it and a Rockman EQ. Almost to a Metallica tone (scoop). Built a stereo dual 4x12" Rack amp from 96' -2000. Still hauling it around and added EVH 50w and ENGL heads. Have Zoom G3 and a Johnson J station for occasion and a Line 6 POD HD Pro X for 4CM on the EVH/Crate BV120 heads. The ENGL gets all the good gear (TS-7, TC Elect G Major, and Intellifex LTD). GCX running two rigs like a champ!
I use both. Tube amp (Marshall DSL x 2) and a FM3 in 4CM for all effects. For me this is perfect. I always feel a real amp sounds and feels better to play. I’ve found a perfect marriage of gear. Great vid, by the way.
II started with a Peavy Bandit, a Squire Strat, and a Boss Distortion back in the early ’90s. I had the first 5150 when the first Pod came out, and I thought that thing was 👎🏽. However, I got into the Pod with the second version 👍🏼 and still have it. I recorded a whole album using the Pod II with a Mesa patch that I still love to this day. At this moment I’m thinking about getting a Quad Cortex or the FM 3 but still thinking too much about the Kraken mkII so i don’t know 😂 I’m a little older than you, but we’re from the same generation, and I agree. This is the best time ever to be a musician. We experienced the old era and now this new one, which makes it even more amazing. Gr Anibal
I was dirt poor and had a no name guitar I got for 50 dollars from a pawn shop and a used DOD death metal pedal. My amp you ask? The DOD pedal plugged directly into a 10 dollar 5 watt PC speaker using an adapter from Radio Shack. This thing sounded so boot leg but I practiced for 5 to 7 hours a day on this retched setup. I eventually saved some money up and that with store credit bought a Peavey 5150 block letter and and a brand new Jackson Kelley. The difference was monumental and I was on my journey for tone. I had this setup for 10+ years before eventually trying other things like Mesa Boogie etc... Now in 2023 I am in my forties and have 7 top shelf tube amps as well as the Kemper and Axe III. I am still just as in love with playing now as I was at 17.
Started with Crate, got into Line 6 via Pocket POD and Spider Valve, became a tube and vintage effects snob, then played only an Esquire straight into a cranked non-master volume tube amp. aaaand nowadays I'm back into L6, playing an HX Stomp direct and treating my guitar like an extension of my keys & synth rig. The only thing constant in gear is change.
My first ever guitar was an Ibanez SA120, paired with a Peavey Rage 158 practice amp, and a Zoom G2.1u FX pedal. I still have the guitar but it needs restoring since all the hardware already has corrosion and rust. While the FX pedal has long been gone (the buttons needed replacing and I didn't really had any resources back then so I just gave up), the practice amp is still alive and well and I use it as a speaker for MV shoots. LOL! I'm working on restoring the guitar but it's really hard to get 3rd party hardware here so it's kind of a challenge. I hope to restore it one day with upgraded hardware and see if it still sounds as awesome as when I first had it!
I started on a really cheap, used epiphone SG, a Zoom 505 and a practice amp I didn't even recall the brand of. I think I was 13 or 14 at the time, looking back I obviously sounded terrible but 13yo me thought the 505 was really cool lol. Now I have a few strandbergs, an Aristides, a Mayones, Helix, Axe Fx III, a few strymon, eventide and meris, as well as a Bogner XTC 101b. Will play guitar till I physically can't anymore.

I was spoiled. My dad played guitar, so he let me borrow his teal stripe 1987 Peavey Bandit 112 and his Affinity Tele, as well as his 1971 Kingston Tele copy, and straight up gave me his Zoom 505II (the champagne colored special edition one) that he bought because he didn't like it. My first electric guitar that was actually mine was an Ibanez GiO, a 2001 GRX45 with H-S-S config. My second electric guitar was a 2003 RG7321, and after that I got a 2005 BC Rich Virgo and an Ibanez RGT42, all of which which save for the GiO I still have to this day, and the first multi-FX pedal bought specifically for me was a Zoom G7.1ut. My dad still has that Bandit, and he also has an old vintage Peavey 200 W hybrid bass amp, that he loves to play his tele with flatwounds through.

I was wondering if you could do something a little different on a video, and this is super selfish of me to ask, but I have been trying to figure out how some of these new bands are getting their guitar tones. Examples are the new Polaris album or the self titled ERRA album. I'd love to see your take on how to achieve tones like that.
My brother bought me some kind of fire engine red BC RICH from a pawn shop for my 18th birthday waaaay back in 1993. Then I got some kind of funky peavy amp like you described. It's fun to reminisce about where we started the ol guitar journey. My friend had a Gorilla amp. If you can remember those you're probably an old guy.
I have a question about the latency? I owned quad cortex and had issues... on the right hand i felt it was slowing me down or making me play bad, the neural dsp plugins did not have this problems. I never tried fractal audio and i was curious if you could tell me how does it feel in terms of playability and tones . Does it feel more secure playing on a gig session than quad cortex (which i sold) , does it have all the amps that quad cortex has, do they give free updates with new amps , pedals , etc and does it have the processor power to create good modern metal tones and handle it live with brio? Should i invest in Fractal Fm3mkiiturbo or should i wait for something better? I alreay have the neural dsp plugins which suffice my studio needs, but i don't have something to rely on playing live sessions.
My first "real" amp was a 2x10 CRATE GC40XL combo. Ha! The clean/chorus sounds were actually not bad. Ha! Then came a Zoom 505. Bwahahaha! Then an M-Audio Blackbox Reloaded interface (which I still have and occasionally love on). Had several vintage tube amps, a Victory "The Jack" V4 preamp, and a Fractal AXFX Ultra that was actually gifted to me, but unfortunately had to sell them all during Covid. Recently I've been using a Vox Nu-Tube "Valve Energy" Silk Drive as a clean preamp into various amp sims, and it's not only made those sims "feel" more convincing, but has also allowed me to use a range of analog Boost/OD/Distortion/Fuzz pedals into them! With some tweaking obviously, but the Vox Silk Drive IMO?!! Is a total SLEEPER preamp pedal for those who are getting their tones "in the box", but want a more tangible analog front end dynamic experience. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I started way back in the 90's with Digitech RP amp and cab simulators, that went into a 100 watt solid state Randall head and out of a Marshall MG 412 cab. I recieved so many compliments on my tone! I also used the Behringer V amp 2 for a while. I think it's all about how you adjust your tones. I heard players with $2000 rigs that sounded awful, and players with a tube screamer into a tiny Fender 112 combo that sounded great. Too many players expect all the presets to sound awesome, but they rarely do without lots of adjustments.
My first real amp 25 years ago was a Roland 405... lol. My next amp was a late 90s bandit and i loved it when the bass player left his 1x15 combo overnight.... the bandit pre out into a 1x15 combo sounded massive.... at the time... now its a helix and 3 half stacks... in a 12x12 studio😂
Hey Jon hope you’re doing great! I love the ownhammer rock box IRs so much I can’t use anything else now. Nothing is comparable. I do like the v30 English and use it the most but am trying to figure out what to buy next. I’d like a good greenback flavor. I have the h30 and Lynchback. I’m wondering how the m25 or m65 might be with my Friedman BE100. Really want to pick the right 1 here. I used the york Marshall v30 the most before I got these so maybe the new 1 you talked about in this video will be the best 1 to get for now. Also I just got the strymon big sky plugin free trial and it sounds awesome recording with IRs. If you haven’t checked it out yet you should! Really great room sounds!
I started on the LEGENDARY Fender Mustang and Line 6 Spider V. I was super pimp! Now I own a quality Mesa Rectifier 212 V30 cab and a Mesa and Victory Kraken amp and decent selection of pedals. I never hate on those cheap amps because they were absolutely fantastic as a beginner. Although I run tube amps now, solid state amps are fantastic and getting better every day. If not for them, I wouldn't have gotten where I am now. I hope I never become a tube snob. In fact, I believe the future will be solid state/emulators.
Amazing tone thanks for all the info. I started with those guitar and amp bundle but well the guitar always out of tune crap pickups and of course you know the rest so I went and I bought myself a ltd EX-360 with emgs and a blackstar distx pedal and thats how It all started. Then came the krankenstein, the Triaxis/2:90 and a Peavey 6505. Honestly the krankenstein is my favorite since I got it in 2010. I always liked the real amp/cab/mic setup but thanks to you I sometimes use the ownhammer IRs for silent practice at night.
I think Solid State amps are also making a lot of improvements, I mean look at what Hughes & Kettner, Orange, and all these little stompbox preamps from brands like Joyo, Tech21, TC Electronic, Friedman, Revv, Soldano, etc. Then, there's the realm of software amp sims and AI, with products like ToneX and Neural Amp Modeler and GuitarML, and all the endless whitebox and manually coded amp sims, free and paid, from NaLex, VTarAmps, Audiority, AudioAssault, Ignight Amps, NeuralDSP, STL Tones, ML Audio, Analog Obsession, ToneLib, and more. Then there's all other brands making multi-FX units, like Zoom, Mooer, Flamma, Valeton, Hotone, NuX, Headrush, DonnerDeal, etc. Finally, all the cheap, high quality computer audio interfaces available. What a time to be a musician!
Started out with a 90s Peavey Bandit 112, & slowly upgraded to a rack with a ADA Mp1, Marshall JMP1 & 9200 with two 1936 2x12 and a Axe FX3 MKII Turbo. Still have the Bandit but don’t use it much anymore.
For me its all about convenience. Small digital stuff that I can carry in my backpack install where ever I want and be productive as soon as possible. I've got no time or desire to fiddle around with knobs endlessly. What you get for the money in case of digital modelers is just a no brainer for me. I did own some tube amps in the past but sold everything since they are big and weigh a ton. At the end its about the music and not the gear. I remember when I started had a crappy guitar and a cassette player and was way more productive than now that I own everything I need. Sure its not only about gear, life stuff gets in the way but still its not about the tool its how you use it. Also there are trends when it comes to gear and tones and I don't really appreciate everything sounding the same. For me its better to capture performance than trying to make it "perfect".
I think one thing that makes tube amps (without using a loadbox like a Captor or Amp Central) different is the volume. Volume is one thing that "modern" players miss out on. A cranked tube amp , even if it's just a AC15, 15watt lunchbox Orange or 20watt plexi style amp, changes a player's approach to muting, attack, dynamics, feedback management etc. because the volume can be very unforgiving. If you make a mistake on a 50w plexi people will hear it, no hiding space. But it's also such a joy to just crank out a riff and have the room shaking. Player's should experience that. Part of playing guitar is to be loud and obnoxious, it's fun.
As soon as you shifted to the real amp!!! The difference for me was night and day! The amp sounds so big and amazing! Tube by far!!!! The Fm3 Could be very useful to quickly record your ideas , however, for me, the analogue tube amp wins big!!!
at 12 yrs old in 1991 my father put me in the car and drove me to my surprise to Sam Ash music in Hackensack NJ and bought me a 1991 USA Fender Stratocaster with a Fender 2x12 tube Princeton (I think) amp to go along.....little did I know how lucky I was....he coulda cheaped out with a mexican or a Squier, maybe a small 1x10 crap amp but he went balls out....the only think I wouldve done different is he didnt know the difference in pickups as I didnt so we got the SSS model. Since I was a metal kid, the HSS woulda been a better pick. Wish I still had those 2 pieces of gear, breaks my heart I sold them at 17 when I moved away from playing.
When I first started playing guitar, I was using a little Roland monitor speaker (frfr) and a boss ds-1 and I was also using a Strat trying to get Metallica tones. Sounded like a swarm of angry bees.

Re. the reactive loads on amps, the Badlander has it, the Driftwood guys have an option to have theirs built into the amp on a new order & others may have the option. I think that's a pretty cool thing to have become a default thing on tube amps.

I have a Fractal FM3 after having Kemper, Helix, and other modelers, but I want a Driftwood amp, I love driftwood sound and amps. I will start with the preamp pedal.
My 1st amp was a 90s Kustom practice amp. The thing had all the gain you could want on tap. It had an orange style tone knob that would take you from bassy as hell fuzz like distortion all the way to a scooped super tight distortion. The problem was the damned thing didnt have the volume to cut it with a band.
I started on a black Aria Mac-30 guitar that I bought just cause it looked like a cool guitar to get the gurls attention. haha And my amp was a small 15w solid state Stagg amp. I loved it cause I had no other point of reference. Haha. Then I got a Boss Metal Zone and I LOVED IIIT! Haha... Now, 16 years later I'm noodling on my Gibson SG Standard and E-II Eclipse in Purple Sparkle and have owned Mark V Boogies, JVMs, 5150 amps, Helix and Quad Coretex until I surprisingly landed with Boss Katana Artist MKII that I love to death. What a journey. Haha.
I started off with a used Peavy Bandit 1 X 12 & a DOD Death Metal Distortion pedal. I don't think those pedals are in production anymore? It was more than a little overkill for the rock I was playing.

I had a feeling always we grew up with very similar favorite bands. Metallica rules when you pick up the guitar, great school! Anyway my first "analog" amp was a horrible Samick 25W combo and then I got my first digital effect: Korg Pandora PX2. For recording that went in the line in of my sound blaster card and then I played my basic drum tracks written in FT2. These two then went into the cassette recorder. If I set up the Korg Pandora higher the guitar got louder. That was the mixing.

In one way I'm not surprised over how fast guitar amp modelling has evolved, since it has been dependent on the evolution of computers, but I'm definitely surprised over how cheap it has become (as long as you own a computer) and how indespensible they've become in studios. You'd figure that most studios still would want to use "the real deal", but for most day-to-day use it's just more practical, easy and cheap to use amp modellers or plugins for recording and mixing records.
Have you seen the Laney's Supergroup LA- Studio? It's an impulse Response loaded, 3W/0.1W version of the critically acclaimed LA30BL head (remember Tony Iommi? 😉). Loaded with a full Two Note Torpedo module, it is a real tube amp with all the benefits and ease of use of a digital PLUGIN. I have the 30W version and the Studio. The LA-Studio has become my favourite amp now.

I can get a decent tone out of a plugin or modeller, specially recording multiple guitar layers, but with a nice tube amp as a 5150 i can get the best tone without effort....i love more tube amps but modellers are very handy nowadays, and they sound good also
I love my Helix and other than just general updates and adding amps, I would LOVE if they added a great capture feature. I really want an Orange AD30 model in Helix and if I can just capture it, I don’t need to wait for them to add, I can just capture my friend’s.
I wonder if it's actually possible for them to add capture as an update. It could certainly revitalize the Helix in 2023 since it's rarely talked about these days. I love mine and honestly don't see myself ever getting rid of it even if they never do another update.

I’ve had all the modellers and capture devices etc. ended up selling them and getting more tube amps and proper pedalboard with GIGRIG g3 switcher. Couldn’t be happier. Sounds epic !
A little room for improvement on digital? More like plenty of room for improvement. I have both axeFX3 and FM3. The amp/cab sims are still underwhelming as are the FX. I still use external pedals for my OD in front of both of these because the ones onboard are not up to snuff - that should not be needed.
Love your playing and your tone that you get although I'd love to see you using a bigger variety of amps, but the ENGL and Driftwood are seriously sick. Sadly, this video was far too much talking and not nearly enough rhythm playing, and it desperately needs to be without the backing tracks so that we can hear the actual tones of what you're trying to show us. And then afterwards you can play the song with the backing tracks.
I started in 1997 with the cheapest acoustic guitar, later my sisters friend, which was musician, gave me a jolana guitar (czech) and boss hm2. It was a breakthrough for me, as i bean able to play metallica and it was a lot of fun. Now i have a g&l invader, peavey gen custom and a bunch of ampsims but its not that fun anymore.
High ends tube amps still better for high gain and to feel the power of an electric guitar amp, the issue is more than ever the price. From $4k to $6k isn't a purchase I'll do anytime soon. The way I see it the future is going to be solid state / digital, tube amps are going to end up like rare & expensive audio devices that target fortunate audiophiles.
as a former GAS addicted I totally understand the need of a cool specialized device but as an almost broke person, I`d use laptop with audio interface🙂

The slow spinning rotor and baffle in the middle gave the amp and my guitar the most beautiful chorus sound.

What did I start recording with?
In the 80s I had a Peavey VTX Classic twin, which I did NOT know how to use.
I also had a diy fuzz box, made by a friend, that did give me some crunch. that got me excited about guitar tone possibilities.
I recorded it into a cassette player and then eventually, I got another cassette player and learned how to simulate multi track one-take recordings.
Now there are scores of recording options

I started playing in 1998 with a Japanese Fender Strat (which I still have and play often) and a Peavey Rage 158. Eventually upgraded to a Fender ‘59 Bassman Reissue (still have a love this amp), and a Metal Zone. I now have a stack of amps, a crowded pedalboard, and a bunch of guitars, but every once in a while I’ll plug my strat into the MT-2 and into the ‘59 Bassman just for them nostalgia feels.
The Rage and Metal Zone were the ultimate combo in '98! I added a Peavey Envoy to my Rage and Zone in '99 to make a mini-stack of terrible tone... But back then, I couldn't afford a 5150 or a Mesa. Moreover, it was a time when eBay was at its infancy, Reverb didn't exist, and Guitar Center locations were few and far between (and they didn't advertise used gear).
That FM3 Turbo sounds amazing! So much texture and depth to the sound. The best modeler i have heard to date.
By far the best modeler on the market! But you always need a little experience to discover this.

I combine an old Line 6 Vetta with a Peavey XXX for an absolutely MASSIVE metal tone. Lots of customization and tonal shaping. I think the future is pure digital (ask all the big names solely using Axe-FX for everything), but tube amps are still cool to noodle with if you have the money and space.

1st amp was a Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12 in the early 90s. Wouldn’t get drowned out by my drummer and I’m sure I drove all my family and siblings crazy playing it at home 😂
haha i had a peavey rage 158 and a boss metal zone, the classic beginners reciepe for garbage sounding setup 😂🎸..i was so disappointed that the build in distortion sounded much better than the metal zone. i stayed oldschool, analog real (tube) gear since then because the overly excessive digital hype never convinced me. so many famous artists switching back from axe & co to good old jcm 800 with boost, i love to see that real gear is on a comeback right now. cheers 👍

I started with a knock off stratocaster from Zellers and a line 6 tube tone 2x12. That sucked so badly I didn't play electric for years. I finally decided to get back into it in 2018 and now I've got some nice gear and have been steadily progressing in skill ever since.
In 88' I got a Kramer Striker and Marshall Model 5005 Lead 12 Master Volume 1x10 Combo. Had to get a dist also. Finally in 91' got a great amp! A Peavey Bravo 1x12" all tube amp and put a V30 in it and a Rockman EQ. Almost to a Metallica tone (scoop). Built a stereo dual 4x12" Rack amp from 96' -2000. Still hauling it around and added EVH 50w and ENGL heads. Have Zoom G3 and a Johnson J station for occasion and a Line 6 POD HD Pro X for 4CM on the EVH/Crate BV120 heads. The ENGL gets all the good gear (TS-7, TC Elect G Major, and Intellifex LTD). GCX running two rigs like a champ!
I use both. Tube amp (Marshall DSL x 2) and a FM3 in 4CM for all effects. For me this is perfect. I always feel a real amp sounds and feels better to play. I’ve found a perfect marriage of gear.

II started with a Peavy Bandit, a Squire Strat, and a Boss Distortion back in the early ’90s. I had the first 5150 when the first Pod came out, and I thought that thing was 👎🏽. However, I got into the Pod with the second version 👍🏼 and still have it. I recorded a whole album using the Pod II with a Mesa patch that I still love to this day.
At this moment I’m thinking about getting a Quad Cortex or the FM 3 but still thinking too much about the Kraken mkII so i don’t know 😂
I’m a little older than you, but we’re from the same generation, and I agree. This is the best time ever to be a musician. We experienced the old era and now this new one, which makes it even more amazing.

I was dirt poor and had a no name guitar I got for 50 dollars from a pawn shop and a used DOD death metal pedal. My amp you ask? The DOD pedal plugged directly into a 10 dollar 5 watt PC speaker using an adapter from Radio Shack. This thing sounded so boot leg but I practiced for 5 to 7 hours a day on this retched setup. I eventually saved some money up and that with store credit bought a Peavey 5150 block letter and and a brand new Jackson Kelley. The difference was monumental and I was on my journey for tone. I had this setup for 10+ years before eventually trying other things like Mesa Boogie etc... Now in 2023 I am in my forties and have 7 top shelf tube amps as well as the Kemper and Axe III. I am still just as in love with playing now as I was at 17.
Started with Crate, got into Line 6 via Pocket POD and Spider Valve, became a tube and vintage effects snob, then played only an Esquire straight into a cranked non-master volume tube amp.
aaaand nowadays I'm back into L6, playing an HX Stomp direct and treating my guitar like an extension of my keys & synth rig.
The only thing constant in gear is change.
I had that peavey too. Players now don't know how good they have it. Gear now is infinitely better! And that Driftwood behind you is absolutely sick.

My first ever guitar was an Ibanez SA120, paired with a Peavey Rage 158 practice amp, and a Zoom G2.1u FX pedal. I still have the guitar but it needs restoring since all the hardware already has corrosion and rust. While the FX pedal has long been gone (the buttons needed replacing and I didn't really had any resources back then so I just gave up), the practice amp is still alive and well and I use it as a speaker for MV shoots. LOL!
I'm working on restoring the guitar but it's really hard to get 3rd party hardware here so it's kind of a challenge. I hope to restore it one day with upgraded hardware and see if it still sounds as awesome as when I first had it!
I started on a really cheap, used epiphone SG, a Zoom 505 and a practice amp I didn't even recall the brand of. I think I was 13 or 14 at the time, looking back I obviously sounded terrible but 13yo me thought the 505 was really cool lol.
Now I have a few strandbergs, an Aristides, a Mayones, Helix, Axe Fx III, a few strymon, eventide and meris, as well as a Bogner XTC 101b.
Will play guitar till I physically can't anymore.

I was spoiled. My dad played guitar, so he let me borrow his teal stripe 1987 Peavey Bandit 112 and his Affinity Tele, as well as his 1971 Kingston Tele copy, and straight up gave me his Zoom 505II (the champagne colored special edition one) that he bought because he didn't like it. My first electric guitar that was actually mine was an Ibanez GiO, a 2001 GRX45 with H-S-S config. My second electric guitar was a 2003 RG7321, and after that I got a 2005 BC Rich Virgo and an Ibanez RGT42, all of which which save for the GiO I still have to this day, and the first multi-FX pedal bought specifically for me was a Zoom G7.1ut. My dad still has that Bandit, and he also has an old vintage Peavey 200 W hybrid bass amp, that he loves to play his tele with flatwounds through.
I bought some of the rock box packs after watching this video the other day. They are amazing. Thanks for promoting them. I love your tones, and your less is more philosophy. I was wondering if you could do something a little different on a video, and this is super selfish of me to ask, but I have been trying to figure out how some of these new bands are getting their guitar tones. Examples are the new Polaris album or the self titled ERRA album. I'd love to see your take on how to achieve tones like that.

My brother bought me some kind of fire engine red BC RICH from a pawn shop for my 18th birthday waaaay back in 1993. Then I got some kind of funky peavy amp like you described. It's fun to reminisce about where we started the ol guitar journey. My friend had a Gorilla amp. If you can remember those you're probably an old guy.

I am someone who uses a cab. Would you suggest a unit like this or is a traditional amp with pedals better.
I have a question about the latency? I owned quad cortex and had issues... on the right hand i felt it was slowing me down or making me play bad, the neural dsp plugins did not have this problems. I never tried fractal audio and i was curious if you could tell me how does it feel in terms of playability and tones . Does it feel more secure playing on a gig session than quad cortex (which i sold) , does it have all the amps that quad cortex has, do they give free updates with new amps , pedals , etc and does it have the processor power to create good modern metal tones and handle it live with brio? Should i invest in Fractal Fm3mkiiturbo or should i wait for something better? I alreay have the neural dsp plugins which suffice my studio needs, but i don't have something to rely on playing live sessions.
My first "real" amp was a 2x10 CRATE GC40XL combo. Ha!
The clean/chorus sounds were actually not bad. Ha!

Then an M-Audio Blackbox Reloaded interface (which I still have and occasionally love on).
Had several vintage tube amps, a Victory "The Jack" V4 preamp, and a Fractal AXFX Ultra that was actually gifted to me, but unfortunately had to sell them all during Covid.
Recently I've been using a Vox Nu-Tube "Valve Energy" Silk Drive as a clean preamp into various amp sims, and it's not only made those sims "feel" more convincing, but has also allowed me to use a range of analog Boost/OD/Distortion/Fuzz pedals into them! With some tweaking obviously, but the Vox Silk Drive IMO?!!
Is a total SLEEPER preamp pedal for those who are getting their tones "in the box", but want a more tangible analog front end dynamic experience.

I started way back in the 90's with Digitech RP amp and cab simulators, that went into a 100 watt solid state Randall head and out of a Marshall MG 412 cab. I recieved so many compliments on my tone! I also used the Behringer V amp 2 for a while. I think it's all about how you adjust your tones. I heard players with $2000 rigs that sounded awful, and players with a tube screamer into a tiny Fender 112 combo that sounded great. Too many players expect all the presets to sound awesome, but they rarely do without lots of adjustments.
I had a Korg Pandora first edition which was amazing plugged straight into the desk.
My first real amp 25 years ago was a Roland 405... lol. My next amp was a late 90s bandit and i loved it when the bass player left his 1x15 combo overnight.... the bandit pre out into a 1x15 combo sounded massive.... at the time... now its a helix and 3 half stacks... in a 12x12 studio😂
Hey Jon hope you’re doing great! I love the ownhammer rock box IRs so much I can’t use anything else now. Nothing is comparable. I do like the v30 English and use it the most but am trying to figure out what to buy next. I’d like a good greenback flavor. I have the h30 and Lynchback. I’m wondering how the m25 or m65 might be with my Friedman BE100. Really want to pick the right 1 here. I used the york Marshall v30 the most before I got these so maybe the new 1 you talked about in this video will be the best 1 to get for now. Also I just got the strymon big sky plugin free trial and it sounds awesome recording with IRs. If you haven’t checked it out yet you should! Really great room sounds!
I started on the LEGENDARY Fender Mustang and Line 6 Spider V. I was super pimp! Now I own a quality Mesa Rectifier 212 V30 cab and a Mesa and Victory Kraken amp and decent selection of pedals. I never hate on those cheap amps because they were absolutely fantastic as a beginner. Although I run tube amps now, solid state amps are fantastic and getting better every day. If not for them, I wouldn't have gotten where I am now. I hope I never become a tube snob. In fact, I believe the future will be solid state/emulators.

I started with those guitar and amp bundle but well the guitar always out of tune crap pickups and of course you know the rest so I went and I bought myself a ltd EX-360 with emgs and a blackstar distx pedal and thats how It all started. Then came the krankenstein, the Triaxis/2:90 and a Peavey 6505. Honestly the krankenstein is my favorite since I got it in 2010. I always liked the real amp/cab/mic setup but thanks to you I sometimes use the ownhammer IRs for silent practice at night.
I think Solid State amps are also making a lot of improvements, I mean look at what Hughes & Kettner, Orange, and all these little stompbox preamps from brands like Joyo, Tech21, TC Electronic, Friedman, Revv, Soldano, etc. Then, there's the realm of software amp sims and AI, with products like ToneX and Neural Amp Modeler and GuitarML, and all the endless whitebox and manually coded amp sims, free and paid, from NaLex, VTarAmps, Audiority, AudioAssault, Ignight Amps, NeuralDSP, STL Tones, ML Audio, Analog Obsession, ToneLib, and more. Then there's all other brands making multi-FX units, like Zoom, Mooer, Flamma, Valeton, Hotone, NuX, Headrush, DonnerDeal, etc. Finally, all the cheap, high quality computer audio interfaces available.

Started out with a 90s Peavey Bandit 112, & slowly upgraded to a rack with a ADA Mp1, Marshall JMP1 & 9200 with two 1936 2x12 and a Axe FX3 MKII Turbo. Still have the Bandit but don’t use it much anymore.

For me its all about convenience. Small digital stuff that I can carry in my backpack install where ever I want and be productive as soon as possible. I've got no time or desire to fiddle around with knobs endlessly. What you get for the money in case of digital modelers is just a no brainer for me. I did own some tube amps in the past but sold everything since they are big and weigh a ton. At the end its about the music and not the gear. I remember when I started had a crappy guitar and a cassette player and was way more productive than now that I own everything I need. Sure its not only about gear, life stuff gets in the way but still its not about the tool its how you use it. Also there are trends when it comes to gear and tones and I don't really appreciate everything sounding the same. For me its better to capture performance than trying to make it "perfect".
Nothing beats my Amp1 tone on stage... maybe the new Ampx will do

I think one thing that makes tube amps (without using a loadbox like a Captor or Amp Central) different is the volume. Volume is one thing that "modern" players miss out on. A cranked tube amp , even if it's just a AC15, 15watt lunchbox Orange or 20watt plexi style amp, changes a player's approach to muting, attack, dynamics, feedback management etc. because the volume can be very unforgiving. If you make a mistake on a 50w plexi people will hear it, no hiding space. But it's also such a joy to just crank out a riff and have the room shaking. Player's should experience that.
Part of playing guitar is to be loud and obnoxious, it's fun.
That is a personal thing though. I'm so used to playing at lower levels now that I find loudness somewhat uncomfortable

As soon as you shifted to the real amp!!! The difference for me was night and day! The amp sounds so big and amazing! Tube by far!!!! The Fm3 Could be very useful to quickly record your ideas , however, for me, the analogue tube amp wins big!!!
at 12 yrs old in 1991 my father put me in the car and drove me to my surprise to Sam Ash music in Hackensack NJ and bought me a 1991 USA Fender Stratocaster with a Fender 2x12 tube Princeton (I think) amp to go along.....little did I know how lucky I was....he coulda cheaped out with a mexican or a Squier, maybe a small 1x10 crap amp but he went balls out....the only think I wouldve done different is he didnt know the difference in pickups as I didnt so we got the SSS model. Since I was a metal kid, the HSS woulda been a better pick. Wish I still had those 2 pieces of gear, breaks my heart I sold them at 17 when I moved away from playing.
When I first started playing guitar, I was using a little Roland monitor speaker (frfr) and a boss ds-1 and I was also using a Strat trying to get Metallica tones. Sounded like a swarm of angry bees.
What are your thoughts on the Marshal JMD1 series of amps? I have the JMD1:100W head and love the versatility of it.

Re. the reactive loads on amps, the Badlander has it, the Driftwood guys have an option to have theirs built into the amp on a new order & others may have the option. I think that's a pretty cool thing to have become a default thing on tube amps.
Are they really reactive loads though? There's also a pretty big difference in quality when you compare various reactive loads to each other

My 1st amp was a 90s Kustom practice amp. The thing had all the gain you could want on tap. It had an orange style tone knob that would take you from bassy as hell fuzz like distortion all the way to a scooped super tight distortion. The problem was the damned thing didnt have the volume to cut it with a band.

I started on a black Aria Mac-30 guitar that I bought just cause it looked like a cool guitar to get the gurls attention. haha And my amp was a small 15w solid state Stagg amp. I loved it cause I had no other point of reference. Haha. Then I got a Boss Metal Zone and I LOVED IIIT! Haha... Now, 16 years later I'm noodling on my Gibson SG Standard and E-II Eclipse in Purple Sparkle and have owned Mark V Boogies, JVMs, 5150 amps, Helix and Quad Coretex until I surprisingly landed with Boss Katana Artist MKII that I love to death. What a journey. Haha.

I had a feeling always we grew up with very similar favorite bands. Metallica rules when you pick up the guitar, great school!
Anyway my first "analog" amp was a horrible Samick 25W combo and then I got my first digital effect: Korg Pandora PX2. For recording that went in the line in of my sound blaster card and then I played my basic drum tracks written in FT2. These two then went into the cassette recorder. If I set up the Korg Pandora higher the guitar got louder. That was the mixing.

In one way I'm not surprised over how fast guitar amp modelling has evolved, since it has been dependent on the evolution of computers, but I'm definitely surprised over how cheap it has become (as long as you own a computer) and how indespensible they've become in studios. You'd figure that most studios still would want to use "the real deal", but for most day-to-day use it's just more practical, easy and cheap to use amp modellers or plugins for recording and mixing records.
Have you seen the Laney's Supergroup LA- Studio? It's an impulse Response loaded, 3W/0.1W version of the critically acclaimed LA30BL head (remember Tony Iommi? 😉). Loaded with a full Two Note Torpedo module, it is a real tube amp with all the benefits and ease of use of a digital PLUGIN. I have the 30W version and the Studio. The LA-Studio has become my favourite amp now.

When you play your FM3 and Driftwood amp into your reactive load what USB audio interface and also what studio monitors do you use?
For the FM3 that was my interface. For the amp I used my Axe Fx, could have also used the FM3 though. Adam A77x monitors
I can get a decent tone out of a plugin or modeller, specially recording multiple guitar layers, but with a nice tube amp as a 5150 i can get the best tone without effort....i love more tube amps but modellers are very handy nowadays, and they sound good also
I love my Helix and other than just general updates and adding amps, I would LOVE if they added a great capture feature. I really want an Orange AD30 model in Helix and if I can just capture it, I don’t need to wait for them to add, I can just capture my friend’s.
I would also LOVE for Line 6 to add capture tech!
I wonder if it's actually possible for them to add capture as an update. It could certainly revitalize the Helix in 2023 since it's rarely talked about these days. I love mine and honestly don't see myself ever getting rid of it even if they never do another update.

A little room for improvement on digital? More like plenty of room for improvement. I have both axeFX3 and FM3. The amp/cab sims are still underwhelming as are the FX. I still use external pedals for my OD in front of both of these because the ones onboard are not up to snuff - that should not be needed.
Love your playing and your tone that you get although I'd love to see you using a bigger variety of amps, but the ENGL and Driftwood are seriously sick. Sadly, this video was far too much talking and not nearly enough rhythm playing, and it desperately needs to be without the backing tracks so that we can hear the actual tones of what you're trying to show us. And then afterwards you can play the song with the backing tracks.
I started in 1997 with the cheapest acoustic guitar, later my sisters friend, which was musician, gave me a jolana guitar (czech) and boss hm2. It was a breakthrough for me, as i bean able to play metallica and it was a lot of fun. Now i have a g&l invader, peavey gen custom and a bunch of ampsims but its not that fun anymore.

High ends tube amps still better for high gain and to feel the power of an electric guitar amp, the issue is more than ever the price. From $4k to $6k isn't a purchase I'll do anytime soon. The way I see it the future is going to be solid state / digital, tube amps are going to end up like rare & expensive audio devices that target fortunate audiophiles.
as a former GAS addicted I totally understand the need of a cool specialized device but as an almost broke person, I`d use laptop with audio interface🙂
