Hello! I'm currently an English teacher in Beijing. I've taught English across 3 countries: S.Korea, Japan and China. I spent 7 years in all but China, which is 3.5years so far. I'm trying to move back, but the borders are closed. I also love to study about various cultures and post videos about them as I see them. Just like other cultures around the globe, Japanese culture is very interesting/unique and there are always tidbits that you don't really learn until you live there. I love the video..so you have my sub!

Until I moved from Russia to Europe, it was such a culture shock because people are completely unaware of what's going on around them, everyone is so focused on themselves. I wish this video will be showed in European schools and I will stop getting hit by bags and pushed by angry crowd who doesn't let me to get out of the train because they want to enter faster and take empty sits. Also it shocked me that people can enter houses with their dirty outside shoes on, we don't act like this in Russia that's rude for us

I recommend you not to use "おじゃま" because it might not make any sense. I've never heard such variation of おじゃまします.

Would be good to have an English transliteration of these Japanese phrases. Those who can read the Japanese already, probably know these basic phrases anyway. Those, who don't, will not be able to catch these phrases straight away, unless they can see them written in English.

One question. I went to Japan once during a vacation and I stayed in Tokyo most of the time, I had the opportunity to know other amazing places during my stay as Kyoto and Nagoya. During one of these trips I took a Shinkansen and while I was waiting for the train to come, a young boy, about 16 to 18 years old passed by carrying a pile of books and suddenly the top book on the pile fell off right beside me, I automatically grabbed the book and put it back on the top of the pile that the young men was holding. He instantly apologised to me in a crying tone saying "summimasen!" and left the station running, visibly embarrassed. That was pretty awkward and I've been wondering since that day, what he apologized for?
If a fellow Japanese could enlighten me on this question I would gladly appreciate It. I'm from Brazil BTW.

Sumimasen” is used as both “excuse me” and “sorry”. Also, a kind of “thank you”. He was likely saying he appreciated your help and he was sorry to be a bother to you. Sometimes the strong expressive intonation in Japanese is hard to get used to, but I’m sure he meant it as a genuine response to your kindness. (PS I’m not Japanese, but my son lives in Tokyo and I asked him about this.) I’ve visited my son in Japan several times and I find it refreshing that such a populated, ancient island nation has managed to get it right, and maintain a high level of civility. The country is clean and orderly. People look out for one another, and are so welcoming and patient with those of us who come to admire their homeland.
