    Love to see a comparison, though you did not test the filters in enough use cases. Especially when used agains direct light, cheaper filters tend to show a significant drop in contrast as well as ghosting and flaring. Another factor - difficult to test though - is the durability of the coating and if it has certain properties like being antistatic. I'm personally using the B+W variable ND, which isn't cheap either but works great in nearly every scenario.
    Disclaimer: There are just two ways of making a variable ND filter: stacking two polarized filters, so depending on the rotation angle against each other they cut out light. Second option is similiar to having an LC Display and decreasing the transparancy by applying voltage, as it is done internally in the Sony FX9. So with any mechanical variable ND you will get a polarizing function, as well as the cross effect close to the maximum angle. If you need more stops, there is no way of getting around of combing two polarizers with fixed ND values, like they did in the other PolarPro PM filter.
    Still a decent test that shows that you can actually save a lot of money depending on your use case, thank you Peter :)

    JJC was the first ND-filter I bought mainly because it was affordable. I have tested much more expensive filters since but always come to the conclusion that the JJC is the best. Peter recommended the JJC 1,5 years ago after I got it and I still agree with his opinion on this filter. Will buy another one for convenience so I don’t have to change everytime I change camera. I also had to raise the shutter speed on my second camera when doing a two camera interview because i sold the other way more expensive filters I had since they were not as good as the JJC. This test confirms my impression of the JJC!

    Finally seeing a real review of that PM filter ...everyone is only posiitive because it's a PM filter, no comparisons whatever. So good to see that that PM filter is quite overrated. Yeah it's better for correct colors, but not that good looking at its pricetag.

  • @benl6056

    I bought the PM one before seeing this. I may have bought the other one if I'd seen this beforehand, but I don't regret my purchase. I recognize the quality inherent in the PM one. I like that there's pure neutrality of color, and the filter is super tough. I use it almost as a lens protector because it's so resistant to everything. It's a very convenient filter that comes with a ton of convenient, premium items like the hard case, the extra lens cloth, lens cap and the soft case with the built-in lens cloth. Is that worth over $100 more? That's up to you. The PM filter has literally no problems that I or many other reviewers can find. Whatever it promises, it delivers on. The 2-400 is certainly more versatile, but has a few issues here and there. It's hard to justify the price on the PM one though with the alternative being so much cheaper. I love quality, and the PM one does all it promises to do. I'll probably not by the 6-9 though because of what I spent on the 2-5.

  • @EstrellaViajeViajero
    @EstrellaViajeViajero 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was able to tell on all after the first one. The cheaper one just looked a bit worse - the colors were more dirty in the background blurs that made it quite easy to spot.

    Dude...PolarPro is the cleanest even if it is overpriced.. There is no comparison in this field. It's better to have a clean image without colourcast rather than having to "clean" it in post. I think the combo pack from PolarPro and Peter McKinnon is the one to go. And by the way I missed only one shot in the comparison (the third one). Keep up the good work.

    You pay $250 for :
    $90 for the packaging,
    $90 for the brass ring and

    It's important for anyone considering the JJC filter also acts as a polarizing filter and in the sample images that have reflective surfaces (windows) you can see the difference very easily. I don't shoot video that much, but can see where that would be desirable in a lot of work. For still photographers, it becomes a matter of whether you want to reduce reflections all of the time. Many photographers want to keep reflections for certain types of images, so a ND filter that does not include polarization would be preferable. In selecting filters (and reviewing them), it would be a good idea to discuss whether the filter keeps the color accurate or modifies it to some extent. Again, the importance of this will vary with the photographer.
    Thanks for making the review.

  • @exogendesign4582
    @exogendesign4582 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    JJC produces more chromatic aberration specially in 2:52 on the edge line of the house roofing.
    I usually hate it specially filming establishing shot, the Polar Pro however will look good by just adjusting a bit of Aperture to compensate that extra exposure, I think Polar Pro gives more a neutral look without punching in artifacts.
    JJC looks good considering the price, Polar Pro on the other hand is a toy for a bit of knowledgeable videographers that know what they are doing considering it only has a 5 stops of light vs. the 400 stops of JJC.
    So they have pros and cons but for the price no one can argue about JJC its remarkable. But for more professional stuff I'd go to Polar Pro, its more accurate, also that natural look, extra sharpness, and the set of 5 stops make it more engaging as you need to use them effectively in any situation and thus leveling up your videography skills.

    The stills out of JJC are definitely nicer. Video from JJC seems oversaturated (PM is spot on for skin tones). However that isn't worth the price tag. I currently have a variable K&F for long exposures and I do notice some quality loss (minor but I'm nit picky). Might give JJC a try!

      That is mostly because it's polarized so it removes the cold blue reflections. It has a better bokeh tho which is significant. Also in case you are shooting over coated windows or LED displays, the polarized filter is extremely problematic because it makes ghosts over these surfaces.

      I’m betting I can find a filter as good (if not better) than the PMcK for a $100 less. Super cool packaging does not impress me. Where was the money spent, on the filter or the packaging? Simple and sturdy will do.

    Thank you so much for the comparison, everybody's buying Peter's filter like is pure gold. I am not saying is bad or anything but you know, it's too pricey for what it is. Thanks a lot!

      @@JonackFilm I have a cheap one too and it is fine. I think most filters have pros and cons, not for buying a expensive one you are free of color aberrations or changes on the image quality. Every piece of glass affects the image no matter how expensive. I think they just up the price by adding Peter's name😂

    I got all five right, and I have to say, I personally preferred the look of the JJC a bit more on almost every shot, and that was before I even confirmed what filter was used. It was pretty easy to tell due to the slightly warmer tones of the JJC, as you mentioned, but personally I liked the look! This video was super helpful, I definitely know which ND filter I'll be buying!

    Me today : euh.. Thank you Peter for the comparaison. I’m getting the JJC ☺️😂🤣

    Could tell every single one cause of the yellow tint. That’s usually a sign of a cheaper filter in general. It’s easier to add that in post if you like the look rather than remove it.

    I’ve been saying they were overpriced since they were released. All the sponsored youtubers jumped on the bandwagon and basically ripped off their viewers. Great vid 👍✌️

    I liked the JJC footage better by far in every comparison. I use K&F Concepts variable NDs, and after seeing this, I don’t know if it’d worth buying the PolarPro to even compare.

      Its easy to drop filters since you handle them by the tips of your fingers. One reason why I always move to soft ground or carpet when changing them.

    It's easy to see the difference. PolarPro has a blue hue. I'm personally tried Tiffen and K&F so far. Also, K&F have a CPL as well. In my opinion, K&F wins! If anyone gets a chance, you should take a look at K&F VND+CPL. Hopefully, this helps! Have an amazing day!

    I hate to be that TH-cam commenter, but I think a couple things need to be said.
    Variable ND Filters are 4 layers with 2 CPL filters. The cross pattern occurs due to the overlap of the CPL. If a cross pattern doesn't occur its because there is a range limiter on the filter.
    2-400 is the ND Number, the Polar Pro Filter is 2-5 stops. Take the log base 2 of 2 and 400 to get the number of stops: from 1 to 8.64 at the highend. You have 3 extra stops of density. That's really big and is why the one JJC filter is so much darker than the Polar Pro.
    Still great value as demonstrated.
