Part of the reason John was selected by the band is his quiet demeanor. They had three or four bass players before him and some were rejected for poor musicianship and others because they tried to upstage Freddie and Brian. This concert is fantastic, but that is de riguer for Queen. Great positive reaction!
In Great Britain at the end of 1979, The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal was just starting out, As a 14 year old then i was nore than aware just how incredible Queen were live, And Brian's Guitar with the extra lick when he plays, No wonder Iron Maiden and Def Leppard adored Queen ❤
Freddie is #1 in my book. This song always brings the energy. Deaky does loosen up in later concerts but here he is schoolboy that looks out of place but always is the backbone. Thanks for your reaction! Queen live is and was a totally different beast all together.
This is a 3500 seat theater & those fans were surely deaf for days lol. This is a great example of being well rehearsed while playing and performing with freedom.
Agree that Roger is mvp live. Incredible at Montreal. Was super clear in the first tour with Paul Rodgers as well. Roger was really gluing the whole thing together.
How can it get any better that ?? Freddie is the GOAT ✨💫✨… well heck Queen is the GOAT ! Love this and love your reaction 😊 Must watch it again now 😂 Bye
Freddie and Roger are both the showmen, Brian is pretty reserved on stage and John ... is John. Most rock bands lead with a strong singer+guitar combo, name any band. Queen almost lead with singer+drums combo.
My favourite part of this is where Freddie gives the mic to someone in the front row then reels it back in with the cord. Brian goes to John to make sure he is in rhythm. He does this in Montreal during Dragon Attack as well. All four would signal with looks. In the later concerts that are better filmed it is easier to see. At Wembley they all have their own camera. By the Crazy tour(The Game tour) John decided to have a bar set up just offstage and got a lot more animated. If Brian got too long with his solo John would throw peanuts at him.🤣Glad you're enjoying Queen live!
In later concerts, when John gets his cocktail bar, he loosens up. Anyway, notice how Freddie got the audience to sing along without giving it much effort? Like it was expected of them and they were thrilled to comply. He really was quite electric on stage. Mesmerising.
Justin, the was originally billed as "concerts for Kampuchea"(Cambodia)lots of bands one night, then Queen on their own night two.In the old odeon, must have been great to see them in a smaller venue.
I'm very sure Deaky is doing exactly as expected . . .body cool as can be no matter the surrounding hysteria. And those hands, digitals leading the resounding musical undercurrent. They put that performance together, entertaining fans like no other band. Love 'em!
Someone said once, John just looked like a guy walking around a store on a shopping trip🤣in the 86 tours John was a bit more animated, Freddie is always lighting, he was running all the time, Brian was just Brian and Roger was a stationary flamboyant one. Queen was great because each member was so different. My son is a bass player he at times was jumping around like he was a lead guitarist on stage, he still plays but has calm down over the years.😊 Great reaction.
Killer song. Brian wrote this about Queen's first tour when they were the support group for Mott The Hoople. This song was often used as the opening number for live shows.
There's a certain daring in Freddie's singing - he's so all in with such confidence hat he can go with the momentum...and any thought to hold back, to pace himself, make it till the end of the show, not even a chance. These are indeed his "don't stop me now" days, on all fronts. Glorious energy and zeal. I'm telling you, those arm swipes in the air? That's his boxing days. Look at old James Cagney movies, another boxer, he's doing it too. Both EXPLODE on screen. Someone coined Cagney as having "fierce charisma." Both these men were that way onstage/film but in real life gentle sweet souls finding their way in life.
This my all time favourite Queen live track. Just Queen at their rockin' best! John Deacon was always the shy one and never really enjoyed the limelight. Lived your reaction to this Justin. Could see in your face how much you enjoyed it. Cheers
One of my favorite songs performed live!! Written by Brian inspired by Queen’s experiences touring with Mott The Hoople, hence the lyric, “Down in the city just Hoople and me”. Mott was known for their big hit “All The Young Dudes” which was written by David Bowie!!
None ever did it like this guy.Freddie was the best ever.Steve Perry made sounds,Freddie Mercury sang everything like it was his last show. Thanks Justin
Freddie is the absolute greatest frontman to ever grace the stage, and his voice is unmatched, but Steve Perry did a lot more than "make sounds " he is a fantastic singer.
I think that's what's called 'having the crowd in the palm of your hand'. I mean, bless Queen for carrying on the hard rock tradition at a time when it was becoming passe. As for rock band frontmen, Freddie is definitely up there. Other greats include Jim Morrison, Robert Plant, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, and Ozzy. He's definitely in the same league.
When John got his hair cut he was given the nickname Birdman they all thought he looked like the Birdman of Alcatraz x from Peter ‘Ratty’ Hince’s book Freddie & John’s roadie x
This is the energy Queen lost to their detriment as time went on. Videos from Brian May's Back to the Light tour are worth watching as he is forced to be the front man, you get a lot more up-front guitar and a great band.
The thing you have to ask yourself could you see Freddie in another band if you see yes which band would it be and would he be as great as he is with QUEEN
Freddie is truly one of the greats from one of the great bands. As you said it's very subjective. I like that your reactions are so visceral and less intellectual or music tech jargon. Some singers and composers lose me with the music technical talk. I for the most part don't know what the F they're talking about. John Deacon also reminds me of John Entwistle, very business like. Not at all like Geddy Lee.
So you know a lot of the songs you didn’t like on the album were actually in this live concert and you loved the performance. So having said that you can see how the live performances are better than the studio version. So you might not like the album of Hot Space but the live performance of some of those songs at Milton Keynes were fantastic and I may be wrong but you did react to some of that concert and loved it. So maybe the live concerts are the way to go.

When I saw this in Toronto, I remember the vocal solo Freddie playing with echo and call and answer being much longer and flamboyant.
This concert is fantastic!!! 💯
All of them are fantastic, including John 🙂

Now that's what I call high quality rock n roll.

Before I went on this journey with you, my top front man has always been Robert Plant. I have to give it up to Freddie!!!! Thanks again.
I understand your point of view. But Plant couldn't play any instruments let alone a piano and compose music all by himself.
Freddie Mercury is the best!!!
He is the whole package. Can do it all!!@ GOAT!@!!
Brian no doubt that Robert Plant is fantastic, but Freddie is on a level by himself. The consummate entertainer.

You can also consider Queen - Live in Houston (1977) or London Earls Court (1977)
YES EARLS COURT
Loved this, my favorite reaction of yours so far, by far! You really looked like you had as much fun as the actually audience!

This is such a cool tune. Studio version is on my playlist. Ty for reaction!
John turned into a ‘disco Deaky’ …the dancing Queen.❤check out the live 1981 Montreal or the live 1986 Wembley..❤Thanks for your great reaction❤

Around this time, a reviewer wrote that John looked bored - that upset John and I think he started trying to look a bit more animated!
Can't wait for the mustache.
You know Justin it is just a matter of time for you to turn. In my mind I already see you headbanging to 'I Want to Break Free'
lol
It is subjective. But who would be above him?

Freddie stayed away from John out of respect. John didn't like the spotlight, and liked Freddie pulling all the attention.
Brian might have been getting back on beat after his solo.
I believe you think Freddie is Number one but I can't prove it but thanks anyway 🍻🇬🇧🇺🇲
