  • Sherwood Park yard is complete and in service.
The framed area against the fence will eventually be a city area, and the posts against the fence will support the new high double main. A bridge is ordered to cross over the yard to the deck, but will not be delivered until the end of the summer. For now, I will concentrate on cleaning up all of the sod, and getting the city base installed.

Thanks Andrew. I know that feeling. You'll like August's construction. I should have a double track through truss bridge delivered by the end of the summer which will start work on the new high double main which will run on the posts against the white fence, cross over the rail yard, and run over the front of the deck.

@@CanadianrailroadsCa I built a raised railroad, you can view it on my son's TH-cam channel Dirt bike paradise. Let me know what you think.

@@andrewway3404 I just visited your son's page. I see we think alike and use double track mains. It looks like your track is roughly 4' above ground. My second level will be 2' above my current track. That's a really nice collection of bridges you built.
You should bug your son to do some more videos for you. I've added the current video to my G scale layouts playlist.

I had fun building all the bridges, lots of welding, my lowest level is 2 feet at the wooden trestle and at the back it's close to 5 feet. I've added a waterfall and small pond since those videos and plan on having my son do another video this summer. I look forward to seeing your raised track work, do you have any frost heaving issues, I just remember that digging there was only possible with a pick axe!

@@andrewway3404 That sounds nice. My pond came with the house, so it's just been incorporated as is for now. The first year, my bridge and approaches were too close to the water, and ice jacking lifted everything about 2". I raised the track to allow for ice expansion, and have had no issues the last two winters. Frost heaves have not been an issue so far. I have some areas where the track is sitting on top of the ballast when the snow clears, but that's an easy fix. I've had track under my deck for two years now, and have had no issues with the fixed track connecting to the floating roadbed. Hopefully the new area will behave the same. I added lots of gravel for drainage, and the yard/city is along my north fence, so it gets good sun year round. I think this is my layouts fourth summer, so it's still a fairly new project.

First time seeing this channel. Awesome stuff. Instead of plywood, have you considered using UV resistant plastic board as an alternative for the base? Won't expand or contract like metal or wood and should last far longer.

    • @CanadianrailroadsCa

Thanks Charles. This is the G scale overflow from my main channel. I'm definitely experimenting to see what works, and what doesn't. I'm not sure how a plastic board would handle the winter. Things get pretty brittle when we get into the -30 to -40C range. For the most part I just use straight ballast. My concern with the yard was keeping the tracks nicely spaced.
