I love this song and the way you play. The keys are handled ever so delicately as each note speaks I can hear the words to "Jesus Christ Is The Way" by Walter Hawkins. Thank you Maestro Mark Payne.
I mean, like everyone on here, I loved the Hawkins Family. And I recognize this is a tribute to the Bishop. But are we going to act like Mark Payne isn't tearing up those keys with this tribute? The first time I heard Mark Payne, it was a concert in 1995 or 6 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He'd closed out with an absolutely fire rendition of Great Is Thy Faithfulness. The elder, deacon, minister, or whoever was doing the closing prayer could barely say "Amen" before the saints bum rushed the door to buy this man's tapes. LOL! I was sitting in the back row, so I was one of the first out the door and to the tables set up just outside in the foyer. I picked up one tape to purchase. A lady had her finger on the very last of a second cassette, asking 50 million questions about it. I scooched in right behind and swooped it up from under her finger and found me a cashier and paid for both. I have had regrets about some things in my past. That act was not one of them. . . Oh well. Anyway, I wore those two tapes out. I still have them (with no cassette player to play them with). Their cases long busted up. I am glad Mr. Payne continues to bless us with his talents.
Absolutely beautiful! Great remembrance and tribute to Walter Hawkins who I knew since he was about 14 years old and was the organist at Ephesians COGIC in Berkely/Oakland. Other than his older brother Danny, Walter was probably the best church organist in the Bay Area. Most people don't know how good an organist he was because of his singing ability, but he was miles ahead of the pack even at that early age. R.I.P. Walter....
benalub3 thanks for the history on Walter Hawkins. Yes I knew he was a keyboardist but not to the degree you describe...I have loved the Hawkins Family since I was a teenager, starting with Edwin! God bless them and you!
Walter was even better than I described - I was 10 years older than Walter and Tramaine, but Walter was better than me at that young age. I played the organ for Tramaine on the song "Joy Joy" on the Oh Happy Day album. The whole album was done in one evening at Ephesians COGIC on a 2-track reel-reel tape recorder. Danny played the organ on the other songs and Edwin played the piano on all the songs. It was a night to remember and I still think about it. Edwin is 3 years younger than me and I'm sure he has not forgotten either. I think the album was recorded in 1966.
benalub3 Wow I was 9 years old when this album was released! I remember listening to it being fascinated by the choir, the soloist and every instrument. Thank you for connecting!
What wonderful playing! When I think about the hour Then I know what I must do When I think about, what God, has done for me Then I will open up my heart To everyone I see, and say Jesus Christ is the way! No one knows the day nor the hour Maybe morn, night or noon But just rest assured Time will be no more He is coming (I know he's coming) soon Coming soon And I will open up my heart To everyone I see And say Jesus Christ is the way Then I will open up my heart To everyone I see And say Jesus Christ is the way And say Jesus Christ is the way
Thank you for this. I would sit and listen to all the Hawkins albums as a child with my mom. We would sing these and marvel at the orchestration of these albums... this was one of my moms favorites... she transitioned in '86 I try not to listen often to this because it brings tears to my eyes and I miss her even more. But the anthem of this song gives me hope that I will see her again
SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I enjoy and can’t help singing to this even though it may not be meant for that. That little blend at the end is so blessed as well. My goodness I never grow tired of this,Mr Payne. What artistry ♥️ Thank You

You’re welcome Damon. I too grew up with the Hawkins music in my home. It was my pleasure to play this in honor of their memory.

Brilliant! What sets you apart is how you express and convey emotions on that keyboard. What a gift you have and you are to this world.
Very tasteful. Such a pleasing, mellow rendition.
Thank you Darius!

Yessss... "Jesus Christ is the way"❤
Brother I absolutely love this, I have an accompaniment cassette track for this. Do you have a demonstration np3 or the rights where I could sing this?
Sorry, no
There is Worship in the song
What’s the name of the song that you play at the end?
Karen A Butler actually was going to play a medley of Hawkins songs and got sidetracked during the recording. Wasn’t the ending intended.🙌🏾
