Which, no doubt, as the song also indicates, is a situation about which you will later have some regrets. I had a similar childhood to Lenker's in many ways (religious family and bizarre upbringing) that as a young person can leave you a bit lost in the world and a bit lost in relating to others and, most importantly, to yourself.
I lost my boyfriend in a vehicle accident on November 30th 2020 & he would always sing this & replace my name with Paul. It reminded him of when we only had known each other for a month or so & he left for New York for a Job. He came back to his hometown to be with me & my son. It can be seething or sulking, but not peaceful. I understand that the melody is reminiscent of a hot bath, but that may only be representing the soft delivery of bad news. I found this song when I had online classes during the spring of 2021. I was extremely isolated, didn’t have any friends and I was all alone, only me in my isolated village in southern Sweden. I had this song on repeat for all that time, and I still to this day love it
I discovered this song at a time that I had just ended a relationship with my very own Paul. The lyrics and composition of this song hit so hard for me that I didn't think twice when the opportunity to resurrect our relationship arose. It's amazing how the pain of losing someone can make you push away the people that offer you genuine love. [CW: suicide] I lost my childhood best friend to suicide in middle school, which continues to affect me to this day. The verse "In the blossom of the months / I was sure that I would get driven off with thought / So I swallowed all of it / As I realized that there was no one who could kiss away my sh-t" in conjunction with "But I'll push you from my brain / See, you're gentle baby / I couldn't stay, I'd only bring you pain" helped me realize that the pain of losing my friend, and the fear of it happening again, was my justification for keeping my distance. I still come back to this song sometimes, circling around the freight train yard of one's own mind, and think of how the fear of being hurt by someone you love can prevent you from letting them in, but sometimes that's exactly what you need to heal. There's infinitely more depth to these lyrics that I couldn't possibly go into here, but I would just like to thank Big Thief for the 22 months of love that followed making my decision to stay; to remain impossibly, heartbreakingly open; and to show up for the "gentle baby" that is both Paul and oneself.

Found this song on a video of a a gorgeous home that i wish in my future i could have in flesh, i just know this song instantly hugs my heart and soul and makes me want bawl my eyes out, this song is going to be with me through all my mortal life and somebody else’s eternity.

This album is from 2016, but I feel like it has an older like eraly 2000s feel to it for some reason. Really good stuff!
