Just to share a bit of my understanding - According to the Buddhist teaching, both mother and father will have to bear the karmic consequences in terms of aborting the child. No one is exception, and it is considered killing a human being and its karmic consequences is very heavy. It is very difficult to be reborn as a human being, and to be able to return to fulfill a lot of promises and vows and the opportunity to meet with a genuine Buddhist master to lead him or her to Buddhahood. Bringing the person to do a prayer for the aborted child with a good motivation to help the deceased and the parents is a good deed... but if one advises and accompany the parent to abort the baby is as good as killing the unborn child. It is important to do continuous good deeds in the departed child's name (if she /he doesn't have a name, you can give it a name) and save lives of animals that are going to be killed for food, medicine, shelter, clothing, entertainment, sports and experiment and also, learn from a qualified genuine Buddhist Master how to do a daily proper practice for purification of negative deeds which we have done lots of negative deeds since beginningless lifetimes until now.....The negative karma can be purified , and doing lots of good deeds and avoid doing negative deeds will be supportive in the purification process and accumulating good deeds.
