I adore Hedi Slimane style and I would dreamed of him making clothes for women in the Dior Homme era. what im disapointed in with his take over on Celine is that the mature feminity of the brand is "erased". Im not feeling welcome in the body proportion of the clothes yet I have never tried them on so i might be wrong. the Saint laurent women had always been a thin poweful masculine sexy women so he was perfect for saint laurent. for Celine, the trademark of the maison is a fashionable mature femininity. We kind of lost what made Celine a good niche. I don't see any difference between a saint laurent shop, a dior homme shop or a celine shop. Totally agree. I love Hedi Slimane, but his style has already permeated the fashion industry to such a large degree that we see it everywhere. Celine under Phoebe had such a unique, easy, beautiful luxe look. The layers and flow were Celine. We don't need more of the skinny rocker chic aesthetic on the runway because it's already so ubiquitous. We need a foil for this aesthetic. Phoebe's work wasn't better, it was CELINE ( and a touch Chloé).

Also Hedi Slimane 70s aesthetics were not selling which is why the last two shows are completely different. The only smart thing he did was hiring Lisa because they know how loyal the fan base is. He used to turn everything he touched into gold, but the sudden dramatic change of aesthetics in Celine, proves that he is not the Midas, he used to be.
Slimane just needs his own house. As much as he “harkens” back to the namesake it still looks like what he did at Dior and YSL. At least Raf’s first showing at Dior was unmistakenly Dior.
I hope she’s not gone forever. Her designs are having a resurgence & the ache many of us feel for Philo’s aesthetics, will only make her next venture leave Celine in the dust.

I remember reading an interview of Phoebe where she said that Celine never really had an iconic silhouette or style (ex. Dior's Bar Jacket or Chanel's Tweed Jacket) which gave her freedom and led her to create her own identity in the brand. It's just interesting how Hedi would reference looks from the 70s where Phoebe did not, showing both designers' opposing perspectives. Then again, on a business perspective, Hedi really brings in the cash wherever he goes. Philo's Celine is aesthetically and luxuriously better, but still super expensive. Was the brand actually making money especially on the clothes during Phoebe's era?
It’s also about evolution and maintaining growth. Pheobe’s Celine was only ever going to attract a specific type of person, whereas new Celine seems to be catching on with entirely new and younger demographics. Also, the prices went down a lot.

I really like this new Celine because it’s pretty close to my own personal style. However I feel like Philo’s Céline was targeted to more mature women, meaning women who knew their own selves and, in turn, their fashion style and were very confident and comfortable with themselves. Hedi’s Celine gives me a more “aggressive” vibe, of the “aggressive to hide their own insecurities” kind. Might be something I picked from the models on the runaway more than the collection itself though 🤔 Anyway, I miss the confidence the old Céline exuded. I feel that Hedi’s style but with a slightly more mature woman in mind would be absolute perfection.

I worked at Celine and no one bought the ready to wear, only leather goods. It’s too bad because those pieces were extraordinary. I’m not mad at the new Celine but I’m waiting for something special.
My personal style is a mix between heritage and modern, old Céline and new Celine. I loved both time periods, I just wish they coexisted simultaneously. Are there any current designers that are channeling the old Céline aesthetic to provide some balance? From what I see, Hedi is providing a toned-down modern version of what Ralph Lauren typically provides, which I think is beautiful and much-needed. But I want a bit of modern too! Currently loving the silhouettes at Totême.

There's also Bottega Veneta, there was this obnoxious hype on social media about their shoes & bags line last year, which are beautiful, don't get me wrong, i'm just allergic to the whole mindless 'it girl' mentality. The æsthetic though is quite interesting 😉 there's also Peter Do, Jil Sander & good old Max Mara, all three are channelling major old Céline vibes & have that understated functional & minimalist take on the WR.

They used too, but non of that vintage style was selling of the sales, so in the last two collection they completely changed the aesthetic and dropped all the 70s silhouettes for more comfortable ones like sweat pants
I think Slimane was appointed to give Celine the branded signature look like what you think of Chanel or Dior in terms of fashion. Probably the reason why he chose to incorporate the vintage Celine into the redesign and almost wiped the modern understated chic of Philo’s. I appreciate Philo’s design however it was 80% Philo and 20% Celine, now that would be totally perfect if the design was tagged Phoebe Philo (not saying it wasn’t good but it kind of diverted from the original signature Celine). Slimane’s interpretation of Celine was messy in the first two shows with the introduction of men’s line and the overpowering dark Slimane-esque design. He gradually progressed it to 70s-80s, still rock and roll but less dark. The latest women’s collection was very new style for him, sporty and varsity. Overall, both designers influenced the brand with their touches, one very feminine and the other rather masculine and less sophisticated. I understand why most ladies were not having his designs for Celine and hence deemed him as incompetent and out of touch. LVMH probably want Celine to have that signature classic that would put Celine apart from other maison brands, might be the reason for the reintroduction of the vintage Celine logo. It would hold more value if to be continued for generations like the classic bags in today’s luxury market.

@@emerikderome8641 Maybe I was unclear but that is the point I tried to make, both designers influenced the brand with their styles just feminine versus masculine more or less so. The designers brought their aesthetics and identities into the brand they’re assigned to. I’m sure LVMH is keeping tracks with the rebranding and its popularity what sells what doesn’t. I do get your frustration though and Slimane’s dark shadows aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Most designers put their identities and interpretations of the fashion house into their work, same as Slimane, his is just so edgy, rock n roll, candid. You wouldn’t hire one unique designer to mimic another’s work, if the house wanted that they would search for somebody else but him. As for the comparison that you can’t distinguish between his prior work to the new is subjective, the level of perception of one person to another is so vast so I respect your comment. I find his design for Celine slightly incorporates more of rustic French bourgeoisie chic, definitely less structured than YSL and Dior, with the punch of still rock n roll hippie-ish. The latest collection was all the above and a bit of sporty introduction plus the break down of formal pieces to appeal to gen z vibes and aesthetics.

Nice.I think Phoebe Philo is one of the best designers of the 21st century so far, she made a new trend in clothing which I think houses like Loewe, Poroenza, Stella Mcartney jumped into and ride that wave with her. In terms of craft, of material combinations, and original design she just have it, she change the ID of the house and kind of fill a hole of clothing desire for feminine, mature, intelectual women; she made Celine exciting and relevant and a favourite...altough I haven't found the exact % of growth when she was the CD, I did found articles saying that it had growth, and I'm sure she wouldn't have had a 10 years stayed without her take working out. On the other side with Hedi Slimane YSL had a 2 digit % growth year after year without lowering the point of price, he morphed the brand with his own identity, which is this Rock & Roll bohemian vibe, and with Celine he is doing that too, although if you look at Celine in the 70s , it seem like he actually is looking at the archives. I'm sure the strategy is to catch a younger audience, like what Kering did when they put him at YSL or like what Alessandro made with Gucci...obviously different styles, you know Gucci is this "more is more" vibe, and Celine is this 70s parisian girl. I must answer myself this questions to make the point... Is Slimane take of the brand groudbraking? No. Is it fresh? Not really. Is it moving forward? I don't think so earthier. Is it easy to digest sellable clothing at a really high price point? Certenly yes. I think Heidi have presented his collections since Dior menswear thinking mainly about concept and style not about design and that's fine not everybody is McQueen or Galliano from the 2000s and not everyone wants MCQueen or Galliano from the 2000s. With Slimane, is about the Jeans and Shirts we had seen again and again for decades, but now they have the Celine etiquette, I think is working, I don't love it but is definitely pretty cool clothing, is for young people with rich parents that can buy it for them. Certenley the Kering Sales team don't care that much what the designer is doing in terms of design and vibe, what they do care about are the results and performance, and as long as the designer creative strategy is working in terms of sales and revenue and mantaing the brand relevant or increasing its own relevance they are going to keep gambling with this types of designers, Is like when Galliano left Dior, he is one of the best of all time, he made fantasy and dreams a focus of his clothing, it was over the top but he was so good that he also made lot of trendy stuff, and actually Dior had growth during his time, then Raf came with the opposite a much simplistic yet amazing Dior, and today Maria Grazia is giving us a softer very femenine Dior, yet the brand Performance is better than ever, they are having an incredible growth in ready to wear not just accessories, so yes there is this existence of nostalgia to great designers, I've seen it all over TH-cam and IG you know for the drama, the dream and fantasy fashion created and sometimes still does, and although Phoebe's Celine wasn't about that she did was about design and experimenting, so yeah some people like me who love fashion sometimes miss that but the sake of the company success will always thrive and it's understandable.

I think he’s building a catalogue of classics and styles that the brand can be known for. That’s why I tend not to judge each of Celine’s collections as a one-off face to the brand, but as individual piece of a wardrobe. I think his next collections will continue to be different. The best way to understand this is by going to a Celine boutique and seeing how clothing, boots, and shoes from many of his collections are all on display together and somehow work in harmony. You don’t get this sense from focusing solely on each collection.
I really liked Phoebe's take on brand . However I couldn't identify. But for me personally Hedi Slimane 's concept is much better and suits me better ... I love his look !
This is a fabulous dissection of the two designers and their solid aesthetics. While, as someone interested in fashion, I think its nearly impossible not to prefer one over the other....I think its worth appreciating what both designers bring to the world of fashion in general, instead of just to Celine. Personally, I prefer both Phoebe's take on Celine and Anthony's take on YSL....but I like Hedi's vision on its own. Hedi's last collection for Celine was a triumph, though, so I remain optimistic.
I just looked at the collection today for spring summer in the store and 90% of it is overtly monogrammed in very large letters or in very large Triomphe branding! I found one bag, the large Romy and a couple of pair of shoes that were worth purchasing. I actually thought I found a fantastic pair of pants, but I find out they are pull ups with a tie waist as most of the pants are pull ups with a tie waist like for children or geriatrics!🤦🏽♀️. The only skirt I found was a little wider than a belt. He may be able to do modern work as well but it looks like he’s stuck in 2018 and 2024 is not about walking around looking like a billboard! The win in this competition definitely goes to Philo in my opinion. I am going back to look at that Romy later this week.

I think power houses of fashion needs new blood. Nowadays most (not all of them but still) of the brands coexist too well together and it becomes hard to differenciate them. Hopefully the 2020s will bring new ideas and shake the status quo!
I see potential in Slimane's ability to reinterpret the House's "code" instead of just having a LITERAL throwback to the 60s/70s/90s. And if he aims for the younger gen, I guess that blantant copy of TikTok style for the spring 21 collections is just lazy.
Conceptually we cannot say one designer is better than the other but when it comes to execution of visions, the level of refinement and collective ness, Hedi is not even close. Not to mention the fact that Philo has been pushing for the social change in the right direction that is feminism with her subtly futuristic take while Hedi is really stuck in the past and arguably with himself. Philo’s collection is humble, empowering and ever evolving while Hedi takes a much more conservative approach that seeks to repeat past success, whether from this house or others that he has worked with.
But we should also critique designers in the content of the brands they work for. Philo completely abandoned Celine’s prior aesthetic to form what was essentially her own brand at an existing house. While I agree with you about her success in executing her visions to a near unmatched-level, Slimane is actually doing what a CD is typically asked to do. He’s referencing the house’s past designs and aesthetics while infusing new culture, creating an evolution of Celine as it was prior to Philo. I don’t think this is a negative in any way, but it just goes to show how intention matters when we critique collections and designers.
I think Heidi made some mistakes in first few shows by completely ignoring the brands history. But if you see his recent few shows you’d find some really good design and overall very vintage and Parisian aesthetics

This video was quite enjoyable I like seeing both sides and I feel like people should respect either side even if they are different they both contribute and honour the true identity of Celine which is what anyone in a house should do both designers just do it in their respective ways

This is recent fashion history!!! Please if you will do a historical analysis, include the first designer who started to bring it back to the forefront. I may not like his style, per se, but remember, Michael Kors started to bring it out. If not for him, Phoebe nor Hedi won't even be designing with this dusted house.

I really like this new Celine because it’s pretty close to my own personal style. However I feel like Philo’s Céline was targeted to more mature women, meaning women who knew their own selves and, in turn, their fashion style and were very confident and comfortable with themselves. Hedi’s Celine gives me a more “aggressive” vibe, of the “aggressive to hide their own insecurities” kind. Might be something I picked from the models on the runaway more than the collection itself though 🤔
Anyway, I miss the confidence the old Céline exuded. I feel that Hedi’s style but with a slightly more mature woman in mind would be absolute perfection.
I definitely picked up the same vibe. But as cleverandchic mentioned, Hedi’s Celine girl is more impulsive, as opposed to Phoebe’s assertive and subdued woman.

I worked at Celine and no one bought the ready to wear, only leather goods. It’s too bad because those pieces were extraordinary. I’m not mad at the new Celine but I’m waiting for something special.
My personal style is a mix between heritage and modern, old Céline and new Celine. I loved both time periods, I just wish they coexisted simultaneously. Are there any current designers that are channeling the old Céline aesthetic to provide some balance? From what I see, Hedi is providing a toned-down modern version of what Ralph Lauren typically provides, which I think is beautiful and much-needed. But I want a bit of modern too! Currently loving the silhouettes at Totême.
Designers and brand such as The Row, Rejina Pyo, and Marina Moscone offer garments similar to the "old" Céline aesthetic 🖤

There's also Bottega Veneta, there was this obnoxious hype on social media about their shoes & bags line last year, which are beautiful, don't get me wrong, i'm just allergic to the whole mindless 'it girl' mentality. The æsthetic though is quite interesting 😉 there's also Peter Do, Jil Sander & good old Max Mara, all three are channelling major old Céline vibes & have that understated functional & minimalist take on the WR.

They used too, but non of that vintage style was selling of the sales, so in the last two collection they completely changed the aesthetic and dropped all the 70s silhouettes for more comfortable ones like sweat pants

I think Slimane was appointed to give Celine the branded signature look like what you think of Chanel or Dior in terms of fashion. Probably the reason why he chose to incorporate the vintage Celine into the redesign and almost wiped the modern understated chic of Philo’s. I appreciate Philo’s design however it was 80% Philo and 20% Celine, now that would be totally perfect if the design was tagged Phoebe Philo (not saying it wasn’t good but it kind of diverted from the original signature Celine).
Slimane’s interpretation of Celine was messy in the first two shows with the introduction of men’s line and the overpowering dark Slimane-esque design. He gradually progressed it to 70s-80s, still rock and roll but less dark. The latest women’s collection was very new style for him, sporty and varsity.
Overall, both designers influenced the brand with their touches, one very feminine and the other rather masculine and less sophisticated. I understand why most ladies were not having his designs for Celine and hence deemed him as incompetent and out of touch. LVMH probably want Celine to have that signature classic that would put Celine apart from other maison brands, might be the reason for the reintroduction of the vintage Celine logo. It would hold more value if to be continued for generations like the classic bags in today’s luxury market.
Although I agreed Slimane needs to work on clothing, what makes femininity so powerful and sought after for Celine women which Philo totally nailed.

@@emerikderome8641 Maybe I was unclear but that is the point I tried to make, both designers influenced the brand with their styles just feminine versus masculine more or less so. The designers brought their aesthetics and identities into the brand they’re assigned to. I’m sure LVMH is keeping tracks with the rebranding and its popularity what sells what doesn’t. I do get your frustration though and Slimane’s dark shadows aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
@@vladmatsnev I don’t know which point you disagree on, I only criticised his scope of work, didn’t say it doesn’t the least resembles his previous work either. Most designers put their identities and interpretations of the fashion house into their work, same as Slimane, his is just so edgy, rock n roll, candid. You wouldn’t hire one unique designer to mimic another’s work, if the house wanted that they would search for somebody else but him. As for the comparison that you can’t distinguish between his prior work to the new is subjective, the level of perception of one person to another is so vast so I respect your comment. I find his design for Celine slightly incorporates more of rustic French bourgeoisie chic, definitely less structured than YSL and Dior, with the punch of still rock n roll hippie-ish. The latest collection was all the above and a bit of sporty introduction plus the break down of formal pieces to appeal to gen z vibes and aesthetics.
The last women collection looks like a Zara/ Pull and Bear collection. It’s so bad, you people are only behind the new Celine because of the k pop stars

Nice.I think Phoebe Philo is one of the best designers of the 21st century so far, she made a new trend in clothing which I think houses like Loewe, Poroenza, Stella Mcartney jumped into and ride that wave with her. In terms of craft, of material combinations, and original design she just have it, she change the ID of the house and kind of fill a hole of clothing desire for feminine, mature, intelectual women; she made Celine exciting and relevant and a favourite...altough I haven't found the exact % of growth when she was the CD, I did found articles saying that it had growth, and I'm sure she wouldn't have had a 10 years stayed without her take working out. On the other side with Hedi Slimane YSL had a 2 digit % growth year after year without lowering the point of price, he morphed the brand with his own identity, which is this Rock & Roll bohemian vibe, and with Celine he is doing that too, although if you look at Celine in the 70s , it seem like he actually is looking at the archives. I'm sure the strategy is to catch a younger audience, like what Kering did when they put him at YSL or like what Alessandro made with Gucci...obviously different styles, you know Gucci is this "more is more" vibe, and Celine is this 70s parisian girl. I must answer myself this questions to make the point... Is Slimane take of the brand groudbraking? No. Is it fresh? Not really. Is it moving forward? I don't think so earthier. Is it easy to digest sellable clothing at a really high price point? Certenly yes. I think Heidi have presented his collections since Dior menswear thinking mainly about concept and style not about design and that's fine not everybody is McQueen or Galliano from the 2000s and not everyone wants MCQueen or Galliano from the 2000s. With Slimane, is about the Jeans and Shirts we had seen again and again for decades, but now they have the Celine etiquette, I think is working, I don't love it but is definitely pretty cool clothing, is for young people with rich parents that can buy it for them. Certenley the Kering Sales team don't care that much what the designer is doing in terms of design and vibe, what they do care about are the results and performance, and as long as the designer creative strategy is working in terms of sales and revenue and mantaing the brand relevant or increasing its own relevance they are going to keep gambling with this types of designers, Is like when Galliano left Dior, he is one of the best of all time, he made fantasy and dreams a focus of his clothing, it was over the top but he was so good that he also made lot of trendy stuff, and actually Dior had growth during his time, then Raf came with the opposite a much simplistic yet amazing Dior, and today Maria Grazia is giving us a softer very femenine Dior, yet the brand Performance is better than ever, they are having an incredible growth in ready to wear not just accessories, so yes there is this existence of nostalgia to great designers, I've seen it all over TH-cam and IG you know for the drama, the dream and fantasy fashion created and sometimes still does, and although Phoebe's Celine wasn't about that she did was about design and experimenting, so yeah some people like me who love fashion sometimes miss that but the sake of the company success will always thrive and it's understandable.

I think he’s building a catalogue of classics and styles that the brand can be known for. That’s why I tend not to judge each of Celine’s collections as a one-off face to the brand, but as individual piece of a wardrobe. I think his next collections will continue to be different. The best way to understand this is by going to a Celine boutique and seeing how clothing, boots, and shoes from many of his collections are all on display together and somehow work in harmony. You don’t get this sense from focusing solely on each collection.
I really liked Phoebe's take on brand . However I couldn't identify. But for me personally Hedi Slimane 's concept is much better and suits me better ... I love his look !

The new celine is starting to grow on me i genuinely like te latest colection.
This is a fabulous dissection of the two designers and their solid aesthetics. While, as someone interested in fashion, I think its nearly impossible not to prefer one over the other....I think its worth appreciating what both designers bring to the world of fashion in general, instead of just to Celine. Personally, I prefer both Phoebe's take on Celine and Anthony's take on YSL....but I like Hedi's vision on its own. Hedi's last collection for Celine was a triumph, though, so I remain optimistic.
I just looked at the collection today for spring summer in the store and 90% of it is overtly monogrammed in very large letters or in very large Triomphe branding! I found one bag, the large Romy and a couple of pair of shoes that were worth purchasing. I actually thought I found a fantastic pair of pants, but I find out they are pull ups with a tie waist as most of the pants are pull ups with a tie waist like for children or geriatrics!🤦🏽♀️. The only skirt I found was a little wider than a belt. He may be able to do modern work as well but it looks like he’s stuck in 2018 and 2024 is not about walking around looking like a billboard! The win in this competition definitely goes to Philo in my opinion. I am going back to look at that Romy later this week.

I think power houses of fashion needs new blood. Nowadays most (not all of them but still) of the brands coexist too well together and it becomes hard to differenciate them. Hopefully the 2020s will bring new ideas and shake the status quo!
I see potential in Slimane's ability to reinterpret the House's "code" instead of just having a LITERAL throwback to the 60s/70s/90s. And if he aims for the younger gen, I guess that blantant copy of TikTok style for the spring 21 collections is just lazy.

Conceptually we cannot say one designer is better than the other but when it comes to execution of visions, the level of refinement and collective ness, Hedi is not even close. Not to mention the fact that Philo has been pushing for the social change in the right direction that is feminism with her subtly futuristic take while Hedi is really stuck in the past and arguably with himself. Philo’s collection is humble, empowering and ever evolving while Hedi takes a much more conservative approach that seeks to repeat past success, whether from this house or others that he has worked with.
But we should also critique designers in the content of the brands they work for. Philo completely abandoned Celine’s prior aesthetic to form what was essentially her own brand at an existing house. While I agree with you about her success in executing her visions to a near unmatched-level, Slimane is actually doing what a CD is typically asked to do. He’s referencing the house’s past designs and aesthetics while infusing new culture, creating an evolution of Celine as it was prior to Philo. I don’t think this is a negative in any way, but it just goes to show how intention matters when we critique collections and designers.

I think Heidi made some mistakes in first few shows by completely ignoring the brands history. But if you see his recent few shows you’d find some really good design and overall very vintage and Parisian aesthetics

You got this very wrong.... Her eye for transforming the woman body stands undefeated. You can still see her copyed by labels as The Row, Khaite, Heard, Jaquemus, Bottega Veneta. Slimane just took a trip down memory lane.... Slimane is dusty and sentimental. Phoebe is sharp and fresh. Very different!
