I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart! Your memories and lives lived at this old church are touching and treasured in your hearts The memories now live on 60 miles north (give or take a few miles)!!! Just last Sunday the 28th, we had our first Mass at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Old Mill Creek, IL between Lindenhurst and Antioch (not far from Gurnee). It is where you can go and see your church's facade at it's new home and parish!
Thank your for posting this, this church was decorated by my grandfather John A Mallin, I was never able to visit the church before it closed so this is really good to see.
I am crying as I type this. This was my family's home forever (Winiecki). All of us were baptized, received communion and confirmation. Most of us were married in this incredibly beautiful church. My grandfather was a trustee, my parents were active in all the organizations. St.. John's helped to form our faith life. The memories will never leave our hearts. Thank you for this opportunity to remember and reflect on what was our past. Beautifully done.
Thank you for the video. My mother graduated from the old school. I went to the new school and graduated in 1964. I was a cub scout, boy scout, and explorer scout there. My first communion and confirmation. I am so sad to see it go but what wonderful memories I have. Thank you again. Dennis T.
We lived across the street from the Church in the late 70s. I as an altar boy at the Church. Father Ray baptized my oldest son. We witnessed the Virgen Mary cry at the Church (it is rumored that it was scam by the person person who made the statue). This video brings back so many memories... thanks for posting it on youtube.
Thank you, Ashley, for posting this. I am the organist at St. Raphael the Archangel, the parish that is reassembling major portions of the exterior of St. John of God. I had the honor and pleasure of touring this grand building before it was demolished, and I could always tell what a special place it was. I'm so sorry we couldn't save more of it, but I hope, in some small way, what we are doing allows the spirit of the people of St. John of God and this parish to live on far into the future.
How very sad. I grew up in this Church - - went to the grammar school and the church all my growing up years. I don't remember them being particularly nice - - but it was my foundation so long ago. I made my communion and confirmation there, graduated there, my sister was married there. . How could this have happened? It was a beautiful church, every holiday was a celebration. Its so sad, I cannot go back to the neighborhood I grew up in, cannot visit Sherman Park, Ashland Avenue, my beautiful Church and School. . . everything I knew in my youth is now gone. . yet it seemed it would last forever. Thank you for sharing this. .. wish you could have done also for the school. . Does anyone know what happened to the statues? And the saddest of all was seeing the beautiful organ in ruin.. . that magnificent organ. . such glorious sounds came from it. .
Heart-achingly beautiful. I too am sorry more could not be preserved. Bless you and your fellow parishioners for preserving and re-using the façade. What theatre organ are you playing in your photo?
If you google Saint Raphael the Archangel Church in Antioch, IL, go to their site, and go to the photo galleries. They have many photos detailing the construcion of their new church, using Saint John of God's exterior
My oldest cousin was married there. I was to this church a couple of times when the statue of Our Lady was reported to be crying. I heard about it while vacationing in Rome. I lived on the southwest side not far from Midway Airport. It was an incredibly beautiful church. Anyone know what happened to that statue?
Does anyone know the name of the church that purchased the facade of Saint John of God?? What else was saved from this church?? What has become of the beautiful furnishinshings??

I attended St John of God School in 1962, First Grade. I recall the Church and school very fondly. The Sisters were very good to me.

Did any of the murals survive? The artwork looked beautiful.
What a Shame...
