I miss these days. 1995 - 1998 were the heydays of alt.country. Son Volt, Wilco, The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown... we had it so good.

reiggin agree, were great days. Check out Marah’s “Let’s cut the crap and hook up later on tonight”. Came out in 98 i think.

Remember going on a trip to Washington and looking for Uncle Tupelo albums in every record shop we passed. Time with no Spotify ,no You Tube, just a breath of who these guys are because Central Cali never did find out what alt country was. We're lucky now to be able to look back at them, keep em alive! And Mr. McDaniel, I still play "Kids in Philly" regularly.

They were never the same after this lineup. Too bad. This was the best of the best.

Managed to see them on their first tour of Toronto and we were blown away. Plus Eric Heywood on some of the slower songs (Windfall, Tear Stained Eye, etc). Caught Wilco too when they still did some Uncle Tupelo songs.

SV’s Trace is one of the best 10 albums ever in the Americana or alt country genre . My other favourites include Hollywood Town Hall , Anodyne , Car wheels on a gravel road, Being there, Southern rock opera, Dog Days ( Blue mountain) , Stranger’s Almanac, Cold Roses, Southeastern, audible sigh ( vigilantes of love )

    [From PBS]
Austin City Limits: Son Volt DVD
This performance, recorded in 1996, was a milestone in the evolution of so-called 'alternative country' music. Jay Farrar with Jeff Tweedy, were founding members of the legendary band Uncle Tupelo whose four albums became instant classics. Following the demise of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar forged ahead into new musical territory, putting together drummer Mike Heidorn, guitarist Dave Boquist and bassist Jim Boquist, to create Son Volt.

I really feel sorry for folks that don't "get" Son Volt. I think they're the same people that think the crap the last couple decades or so, that they call country music, is good.

CMT played some great artists during the 1990s/80s and it looked. like what was thought as country music was really moving forward with acts like Patty Loveless. When Garth Brooks and Shania Twain showed up and then smililar acts it was downhill until "country music" is in the sad state of affairs that it is today. You could say that mainstream rock and pop took a nosedive at about the same time. Fortunately, there is good music out there but you have to look for it.

Saw them live about this time. I was up against the stage. Boquist had this same guitar and shirt. They were always so loud. They played this song first. When they exploded into Route the guy next to me started swinging his beer like a lasso getting beer on the guitar and shirt.

    Reality, it burns
The way we're living is worse
The pillars of inspiration are all falling down
The clean-up won't work while the fallout goes on.
And it's now or never, too close to the latter
We're all living proof that nothing lasts.
    Standing in the neutral zone
    Living on sleep deprivation
The rural route sleeps while the city bleeds all over itself
Over the falls in a barrel is where the answers have gone
And it's now or never, too close to the latter
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
And it's here for now, transient tomorrow
We're all living proof that nothing lasts.
Another road remains, but it provides no more
It can only take us away
Southbound, you can taste the weather
    It feels like home
    And it's now or never
    Too close to the latter
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
And it's here for now, transient tomorrow
We're all living proof that nothing lasts.

And Jim just looks down with a little grin, like "oops, hope Jay doesn't get mad at little bro". Jay seems to give Dave a "no big deal" shrug.
BTW--I too loved Dave's playing, but also thought Brad Rice and James Walbourne did awesome work in Son Volt. Good guitarists want to play with Jay!

Sorry to be negative, but Son Volt is one of the few bands where the live versions are not as raw and powerful as the recorded ones. Their album "Trace" has the guitars really mixed up front with a lot of gain...almost Neil Young like...very rock and roll. Yet when they play those songs live, they are a cleaner sound and just not as effective.

    • @andan04
      @andan04 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Maybe if you're listening to a live recording like this. But if you see them live, it's a different experience. A song like "Route" is plenty raw, powerful . . . and loud.
