  • Me, being a raging feminist, of course had to read this book. I think Emily covers a lot of great topics in this book. I recommend putting this on y'alls TBRs.
TW for those sensitive about weight or ED.

I don’t understand how she expects to be noticed for her intelligence instead of her beauty when she’s in a field where she is bound to be objectified like modelling when she could’ve taken that time, gone to school and pursue a career in a field where you’re not essentially selling your body. It’s her choice get into a line of work where she’s actively showing off her assets and depriving herself of being known for being intelligent. She could’ve been known as a scientist, businesswoman or a female engineer but she chose to go down the path of modelling when she should’ve thought about the public image that comes with it.
Also she states in a section of a book where she’s in conversation with her therapist and I quote: “Apples and oranges”, my therapist says. “What if you’re not the same as other women, what if you’re an entirely different fruit?” she asks gently. “But everyone has a favourite fruit,” I tell her. As I feel a tear run down my cheek.”
So while she’s made an attempt at saying earlier how she doesn’t want to be known for her beauty she states to her therapist that “everyone has a favourite fruit”. A statement that’s so emotional to her that she’s let a tear roll down her cheek while thinking about it. My point being is she’s actively pursuing beauty when saying this when she’s trying to reject it earlier in her book and trying to say that women shouldn’t be objectified. Then later she states, “I’m still addicted to the sensation watching a post go crazy with comments and likes on Instagram. Casually snapping a picture and uploading it to 28 million people provides a pretty serious high. There’s a thrill in knowing that folks all over the world might be talking about what I posted. It’s quite a rush creating a tidal wave like that whenever I want.”
She literally says she enjoys creates making a tidal wave when posting a picture to her social media page, I bet that’s not referring to pictures of her Sunday breakfast.
Throughout the book she actively goes out to state the negatives of female beauty when taking all of the positives, it’s very contradicting and spoiled behaviour in my opinion and doesn’t support any feminist ideology whatsoever.
It’s disappointing to me that a book like this gets praised with all of its inconsistencies and contradictions but that’s just my opinion.
It’s a very cool review you made and I enjoyed listening to your opinions but I just can’t appreciate the book.

Great review! I'm deciding if buying this book worth it (in Argentina is very expensive). I currently read some Gloria Steinem's book and Naomi Wolf about women and beauty and now I can't stop 🙃

I’m not a feminist at all but I am definitely looking forward to reading. It’s healthy to read things of all angles :)

I’m considered traditionally beautiful. My whole life it’s always been important. There are days when I have that feeling of not wanting to be beautiful. I just want to be valued aside from my beauty. Yeah appreciate it my looks , thank you but I’m also a WHOLE person

What if you went a day and dressed as ugly as u can. Big oversized baggy with ugly but dull color, morning look with messy tied hair, nothing else and glasses to hide your face. How would each day be different?
