When Lab Muffin Beauty Science did a deep dive on why rosemary oil is a scam I was floored with how sketchy the science behind those research papers was
I have been following the curly girl method for years and it has helped me bring my curls back to a healthier state from years of straightening and keratin treatments. However, I notice my hair hasn't improved and has been frizzy. I have been desperate trying all the curly hair "friendly" products. until I gave up and got a sulfate shampoo, silicone conditioner, and a styling cream with silicone, and let me say... my curly hair hasn't looked this good in a really long time!
I have used the Aussie miracle curls shampoo and conditioner and the Umberto Giannini Créme de Curl cream and top it with a mousse/gel. The difference is night and day. 😭
I have thin, almosts bald corners. It's not from childbirth (youngest is 10). It's been like this for years. I started using castor oil mixed with coconut oil about 3:2 mixture and my corners started growing 1000%! It got so thick and long I could braid it easily. So I don't know if it was the castor oil or coconut oil that did it, or the mix, but it definitely worked for me. I eventually stopped using it and of course all that beautiful hair fell out again. So no one can tell me it doesn't work because I saw it work 1st hand. I also used it on my lashes. It made my lashes a little longer but not thicker. It sucked for my dry eye, big time so I'll never put it on my eyelashes again.
Unfortunately I decided to give "no poo" (shampoo) a go for approximately three months. I researched methodologies and accepted that there would be an adjustment period. Alas, for the entire duration that I did not wash my scalp and fine curly hair properly, my scalp became irritated and my hair looked drab and matted. The only positive really is that even now, more than four years after my experience with no poo, shampooing and conditioning my hair feels gloriously luxurious and such a pleasure
Dear Dr Sam, I started using conditioners and products with amodimethicone (silicone) as the main ingredient after watching a chemist on TH-cam recommend it. My fine, thin, coloured and frizzy hair has improved dramatically after the first use. I went to the hairdressers yesterday and she said how much thicker my hair is, I doubt that, but perhaps I'm not getting as much breakage? Either way. I can now comb my hair and the tangles have lessened considerably. Thank you for your great channel!
@@db-gb5xi and Ms Favouritethings, Hi, yes that's the person (chemist) who I watched was Lab Muffin, and I tried to follow her recommendations but couldn't get some of them. However, now I know what to look for (amodimethicone high up on the ingredients list) I am saving so much money instead of products that don't work for my hair. By far the best product that I use is: Paul Mitchell Super Strong Liquid Treatment. Dr Sam might roll her eyes as it says it helps seal split ends, but I know that if it does it is only a temporary affect. Anyway from the very first time I noticed a MASSIVE improvement, but then, my hair was a mess. But the joy of being able to comb it! I have been using this about 2 months after every wash, it's not a conditioner, more like a leave in protein. For a conditioner: Kerastase Discipline Fondant Fluidealiste (rinse out) Heat Protection: Redken All soft moisture restore, this has the advantage of being a leave in conditioner with heat protection. Amodimethicone is a bit lower down on the ingredient list, but as Lab Muffin says sometimes it's the formulation that makes the difference. On that note, I tried Wella's Ultimate Repair which should, on paper, been very effective as lots of amodimethicone in it, it did not work for me at all, so I'm sticking with the products that I have now. I hope that helps and i wish everybody the best of luck.
@@MsFavouritethings Hi, i wrote you a massive reply but I must have pressed cancel in error, so sorry this reply is a lot shorter. I recommend Paul Mitchel's Super Strength leave in protein treatment. Conditioner`, Keratase Fondant Discipline and leave in conditioner/heat protection Redken All Soft. Good luck and I recommend Lab Muffin too on TH-cam.
I found Abbey Yung on here and am a recovering "clean"/"all natural" girlie. My hair has never felt more amazing! Ngl, it was okay when I was using those products but now it's legit incredible. I am also now growing thicker hair from a thin spot I've had my entire life near my right temple. Didn't even know that was possible! I wish I'd taken before and afters to send her but I genuinely didn't expect or think about it, it just happened lol. Anyone who needs more convincing that sulfates, silicones, etc. are not damaging, please go check her out!
I usually look for sulfate free shampoos because I find that shampoos with sulfates have a stronger cleanse and that's not what I'm looking for because I wash my hair everyday. Therefore, I need something more gentle and I find that most sulfate free shampoos don't strip everything from my hair
I fell victim to the rice water thing. For me, I didn't hear it from an influencer or anything, I learned about it from a documentary about the hair of the Yao women in China. I've only recently realized how ridiculous it is that I took inspiration from them when I do not share their lived experiences, lifestyles, routines, diet, etc - and I certainly am not going to gain anything from western products that aren't rice water, but contain "rice water". Their hair is crazy impressive, but should be regarded as an interesting anomaly to people outside their community, not inspiration.
I used Nutrofol for almost a year and haven't had any sort of results. For $80 a month, you're much better off getting a treatment directly from your dermatologist and getting right to the point. I learned the hard way not to waste time and money on other things 😭
@@KyraSchaeffer I definitely think supplements are very low on the totem pole of priorities when it comes to correcting hair loss. I generally reserve that rec for people who are unwilling or unable to use things like minoxidil, finasteride, spironolactone, etc.
Based on my experience with my wavy hair masks definitely have a place in my hair routine. Once a week I use a mask and my curls/waves are thankful for it. I do use conditioner too as well as leave-in conditioner it’s not because I skip those. But a mask can have extra protein or ph balancing qualities that I may skip with my conditioner.
The sulfate and silicone free marketing was meant to steer people away from affordable haircare brands. That said, I also see you only recommending higher end hair products and would love more affordable recommendations. Thank you in advance Sam.
Good quality nutrition high in vegetables and berries rich in anti oxidants, protein and fernented food can realky help. We know protein is essential for good health which is reflected in hair and skin. Plus chronic inflammation caused by utra processed food is a stressor on the body.
Hi Dr. Ellis, great informative video, as always! Do you recommend any particular supplement for gray/graying hair? I started getting a few gray hairs in high school and now at 35 about 10% of my strands are gray. I saw your other video on that specific topic and understand that genetics and lifestyle are the primary culprits. One of the links in the caption of that video mentioned improving iron and copper intake, so was wondering if you recommend any supplements that combine those minerals to help decrease graying hair?
Dr sam about hair masks- doesnt thicker mean more hydrating? Surely there are some conditioners that are better than others, but i feel like deep conditioners definitely make my hair softer- but I also only leave conidyioner in my hair fir 5 min and mask for 20-30 if I have time
I don't buy conditioner i buy hair masks and use it as a conditioner my hair is amazing! I thought the conditioners weren't working for me and then I tried a hair mask and just switched to using that as my conditioner.
@@DrSamEllisMy hair doesn't absorb purple shampoo. I have to use purple dye diluted with conditioner and leave it on dry hair for 45 minutes. Wish purple shampoo would work for me. It would be a lot more convenient!
How do you feel about the suppliment Lustriva? I take Mary Ruth vitamins that were recommended to me by my nutritionist and I pay a bit extra for the "hair growth" version that includes a supplement mix called Lustriva. It boasts hair growth as well as wrinkle reduction. Any opinion on if this is worth the extra $?
I'm not falling prey to another hair growth product. I tried Vegamour, and used it religiously for 4 months. Nothing happened, except that it dried out my hair. Then I tried The Spoil Child. Too messy, and I couldn't see myself doing it every night. Next was Nutrafol. I took it for 2 weeks. I noticed I starting getting heart palpitations. I wondered if it had anything to do with the Nutrafol. I showed the ingredient list to the pharmacist, who right away said that one of the ingredients, Ashwagandha, can cause heart palpitations in certain people. That was it. Having tried Rogaine in the past and not being able to deal with the messiness of it, I was done. Now I just use a fiber powder to cover up thinning spots and also invested in a hair topper. Thanks, Dr. Sam. I appreciate the information. 😊
I have a bit of a dark question: if you are constantly under stress, say if you're mentally ill or something, will your hair consistently keep falling out?
I use rosemary & castor oil. I’ve used minoxidil for months & even tho I saw hair growth from minoxidil, I seem to get phenomenal results using castor oil that out performs minoxidil. I wish ppl would stop saying that natural remedies do not work instead of saying this works for some but may not work for all bcz it depends on a person’s health condition.
Meh. Sometimes hair is already going to bounce back but because you used a certain oil at the same time you attribute the results to that product. But yeah do what works for you
