5 Ways to Tell You Have a "BAD" Coach

  • I get this question a lot and its been on my mind lately. Today I am going to give you my top five ways you can tell you have a "bad" coach. A coach can make or break you and they can also hurt you if they don't know what they are doing. If you think you have a bad coach or they just aren't meeting your expectations this video might help.

John Meadows is an American professional bodybuilder and entrepreneur with an intriguing story. While John now boasts a successful career as an IFBB Pro bodybuilder and fitness company owner, his journey towards the top was extremely difficult.
Growing up, John never met his father, and his mother died at an extremely young age. This meant John only had his grandmother to take care of him. When his grandmother tragically passed away in 1999, John was left alone without his family to support him.
As the years went by, John continued to face new adversities in his life. During his early days in bodybuilding, John suffered from a rare colon disease. After fighting the disease for several months, his colon burst - almost resulting in his death. Luckily, John was quickly rushed to an emergency room where his life was saved. After several months of recovery, John was finally back on his feet.
Coming back into bodybuilding, John used the very obstacles that almost cost him his life as ‘fuel’ to grow stronger. Ever since he recovered from the colon surgery, John has gone on to become a successful bodybuilder, entrepreneur, and inspiration for many people all over the world.

Cheers to the coaches out there that clicked on this to make sure they are NOT doing these things.
Stay humble and keep learning. Have the strength to admit you have flaws and just learn how to do it right. Ultimately, it's about making SOMEONE ELSE great. Not ourselves.

Thanks John, this is some real valuable information. I wasn't real fond of coaches, but I have two shows coming in December, one for a possible Masters Pro card. I decided to try out this one coach who appears to have a lot of experience. He competed, own his owns his own gym and coached multiple competitors, men and women who I can see lined up on his wall. He passed all but one question, that would be my background info. Now you have me thinking brother.

I totally agree with you, In the past I have had bad coaches, I am 72 years old and I have bin training for a long time, but now I need to be careful with what I eat and what I drink so now I try your technique and I get excellent results for my age. Of coarse I do not use the same weights that you use but I use the same techniques. Thank you and have a wonderful day sir.

I hired a big name coach and he fell into each one of these except asking me questions when we started.
When I said I had a bulging disc and had to do hack squats he said you need to get into that mindset.. then took at least 3 days to get back if he sits at all.
My current coach is not well known and he has helped me get the best results. He listens and is prompt.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, John is a rare gem in the fitness industry. I’m not trying to pick on anyone in particular, but take a guy like Mike O’Hearn and please realize I’m not hating on him at all. But with Mike, I honestly don’t feel like I’m getting the whole story and I even feel there’s contradictions in what he teaches/professes. A guy like O’Hearn has a ton of knowledge for sure it’s obvious, but I don’t get that same down to earth humility like I sense with John Meadows. If money were no object, I’d go with a coach like John over one like Mike any day. Love your content John!!!

I got rid of mine 5 weeks out as he was more interested in his top athletes, I knew the diet was wrong & you know who he trained as they did the same thing everyday - cookie cutter training! I rearranged my days & added stuff I knew I needed to do. Ended up changing & within a week there was a huge difference in my physique.

I hear ya on that lower back, I had to figure that one out myself. Seal arches, mule kicks, & bird dog all reteach the muscle to contract strongly again. Deadlift has been the real big reinforcer tho.
I ran out of my special aminos this week. They're kinda expensive & I have to order them, but I notice my pump wasn't freaknasty by the end of the week.
This is really great advice & I appreciate it. I've received very little instruction. I look pretty awesome right now, but I was up & down, off & on for years because I had my nose stuffed in books rather than my ass in the gym or hitting the pavement. It's taken time, & nobody has consideration or understanding for that. Head down, work hard, sift thru & make sense of this mess of information as I'm laughed at, ridiculed & labeled shit.
I've haven't really been able to take photos before. Never a camera, never a person willing to push the button, but I've took a bunch in the mirror this past week. Yesterday's were cool.
Thanks for being a good guy.

I miss John so much. 😢. I hired a coach recently who was on the classic physique olympia stage, and I'm very disappointed. He hates when I ask questions, doesn't ask for feedback, has a nutritional and workout plan that was obviously a copy paste, doesn't respond within 24 hours when that was the promise, and when I give him feedback he accuses me of being the problem. I won't slander this guys name, but after just 1 month I can tell he's a bad coach and I need to move on.

A guy at the gym the other day told me he found a coach for $100 a month online. I asked him how it was going. He said he had lost 10 lbs in two weeks and that the guy drove a Jag so he must be doing something right. Well if you just start working out and quit eating junk food if your overweight you will lose 15 lbs and if your he has to put his rented Jag on his website to sell his services at $100 a month, you may need another coach😂

7- uses a formula to figure out calorie base. There are several formula is out there, easy to find, problem is they are all garbage shortcuts the coaches use instead of actually figuring out what YOUR calorie needs are.
8- lacks knowledge of basic biomechanics. If your trainer cannot figure out a way to explain to you what an exercise is for in so far as what muscles they are supposed to affect…

Lui ignored this and had him having carbs and was asking him to do 50 minutes cardio. After being told he was off training and being told of his back troubles.

A bad coach is the one who:
    1. Doesn't tell you why he's telling you to do something even if you ask.
    2. Doesn't check your history when you sign up such as injuries and allergies.
    3. Gives you cookie-cutter plans. Basically the same thing to all clients.
    4. Takes too long to respond.
    5. He doesn't listen to your feedback and just tells you to keep following his cookie-cutter plan.
    Thank me later
