  • Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert both give this American comedy-drama film (starring Joseph Mazzello, Oliver Platt, David Strathairn, Ian Michael Smith, Dana Ivey and Ashley Judd) a Thumb Up.

Just watched this film for the first time and I'm over 30. I laughed, cried and fell in love with it. This is the only film Ian made (to my knowledge) and he decided to step away from Hollywood to focus on education and buisness for those in need.
Great film, just be ready to have your heart strings tugged.

This movie didn't get great reviews, but I thought it was a masterpiece! I'm a 38 year-old man and cried twice during this movie!! I thought the music was great, plot was very good,, and it was funny, sad,, nostalgic, and wholesome throughout. It was a very tragic movie also, but so is life. The best part was Joseph Mazzello's acting, which was phenomenal at times, especially the crying scenes...and very impressive for a kid his age as well (he has a gift). This movie may be one of those films that people appreciate more and more as the years go by...one of the best I've seen in a while. An older, more mature audience would appreciate it most.

A lot of fellow "Irving-ites" complained that this is not an accurate portrayal of Owen Meanie. I actually did not see the movie until last night and was both pleased with how moving it was as I laughed and cried and disappointed....at myself for depriving myself of this gem for so long joining a bandwagon of snobs I never met. It gave me the same feelings of quirkiness the book did as well as the insight that life is very short and has tragedy in it,find our purpose before we go home. Very beautiful movie, book and message.

I remember my little sister picking this film to rent from blockbuster and thinking what a waist. By the end of the movie, our entire family was in the living room crying, LOL!

Jim Carrey was also in The Truman Show. The same year he did that film.

Ebert could be very bad at that. I love him as a critic but he did reveal too much sometimes
