Must have been very hard to choose ten.... THE GREAT ESCAPE is one of my favourite and I can now just about get through CARE without 😢 crying. Can't wait to hear what this wonderful band come up with next.
I’ve embraced the Hogarth era where some of my friends have left it in the dust after Fish’s departure. I have separate playlists for both eras and usually find myself at the beach listening to the latter that includes Ocean Cloud. Other highlights include Splintering, Escape, Quartz, Drilling Holes, Runaway, Beautiful, Sounds, Lulu, Space, Engine, Neverland, 100 Nights, Invisible! (This music touches the soul).
IMHO - top 10 H 10 - Easter 09 - The Bell and the Sea 08 - This Train is my Life 07 - One Fine Day 06 - Runaway 05 - Neverland 04 - Ocean Cloud 03 - The Space 02 - The Great Escape 01 - The Crow and the Nightingale
I’ve just discovered your channel and as a Marillion fan of almost forty years myself, I’m pleased to see that you have several videos on my favourite band. I look forward to lots more of your great content. Thank you.
Nice list. This is a tough one to do as I prefer the Hogarth era. 1 Under The Sun 2 Care 3 Cathedral Wall 4 The Space 5 Afraid Of Sunlight 6 Murder Machines 7 Cover My Eyes 8 White Paper 9 King 10 Dry Land
Compiling a "h-era" list is an impossible task given that there are gems hidden amongst every album. I find myself playing tracks like "When I Meet God". "Now She'll Never Know" and " Woke Up" more than any of your top 10. For me though "Crow & Nightingale" is the newly crowned cherry on top of the many layered h-cake. p.s. I love your use of "muriel" as a homage to Coronation Street's Hilda Ogden.
After years of being a huge fan of Fish, both with Marrillion and mostly his solo career, after over twenty concerts, drinking Zubrowka with the Man himself, I can say that Marillion's songs with H. evoke more emotions in me today. (I can't believe I wrote that). Now Fish is a very distant land for me. I haven't listened to the last Mariilion album so far, so my top 10 includes albums from Season's End to F.E.A.R. Here it is: 10. Gaza 9. Out Of This World 8. Happiness Is The Road 7. The New Kings 6. The Space 5. The Great Escape 4. Afraid Of Sunlight 3. Ocean Cloud 2. Neverland 1. The Invisible Man
I remember hearing The New Kings when it first arrived in the post, I was amazed instantly, It was the song I already wanted to hear and polished to musical perfection. If I may, a special mention for Gaza, this for me has to be the most important Marillion song, without relating to the subject here, this song has some of the most beautiful and moving moments recreating horrific scenes, which humbles the listener into the lyrics, H put in an incredible amount of work here, and the musical backdrop has excellent continuity. The middle eastern flavours and textures in this are also very tasteful. 👌
Great Escape, Out of this World, This Strange Engine, Splintering Heart,Afraid of Sunlight,Seasons End, Neverland, Fantastic Place,SoundsThat Cant Be Made, The Leavers
Nice list. I don’t think I could make my own! I immediately would want to add in Gaza, The Leavers, House, This is the 20th Century, Last Century for Man, Crow and the Nightingale, The Great Escape, etc etc etc…. And my brain would explode
I know these kind of lists are popular, but Marillion has put out so much meaningful & beautiful music that to try to whittle their work down to 10 top song seems almost insulting to their other works. And no, I don't mean the Fish years. To me Marillion was reborn into a new & more better band when H arrived on "Season's End"...Anyway, it's a solid top ten as these things go, I suppose, yet all I can think of are all the great music left out.
well.. this is my list, no one asked me.. but i love Marillion 1.- Neverland 2.- this is the 21st century 3.- House 4.- The only unforgivable thing 5.- Somewhere else 6.- The sky above the rain 7.- The Great escape 8.- Essence 9.- Eastern 10.- Beautiful 11.- The man from the planet marzipan
My Marillion Hogarth favourite list would be like the premier league table, constantly changing weekly, But my 'Manchester City ' (the one always hovering around the top spot) would have to be Easter. Wonderful lyrics, matched by the greatest Rothery solo ever.
An excellent list, from an impossible task. I am pleasantly surprised to see 'Care' ranked so highly. I have seen the band perform it twice in the last year or so, it is quite moving live. The band has no business making such profound music so late in their career! Besides Care, my top songs would include most of Marbles: Invisible Man, Ocean Cloud, Neverland, Unforgivable Thing, Drilling Holes, You're Gone as well as Estonia, Montreal (my hometown) and The Wound.
Very well done, thank you... it's not an easy task with so much quality music and lyrics. Your number one is my number one too... amazing the poignant views on what is going on behind what The New Kings want to make us believe. Thanks too for your differential comments on the gift every band member is in the whole picture.
Thanks for making this. I actually made a video ranking not 10, but Top 100 from All Eras of Marillion's history last week. Marillion are my favorite band of All-Time, so I had reason to rank so many of their songs I love. Most of your choices made my top 100, although only a couple made my top 10 (Afraid of Sunlight and Ocean Cloud).
Great list but an impossible task to pick just 10 the one certainty is invisible man would be on my list. Thanks for all the great lists keep em coming
Much preferred the early to mid-era: 1. Waiting to happen 2. Afraid of sunlight 3. Easter 4. Out of this world 5. Beyond you 6. Living with the big lie 7. Estonia 8. Berlin 9. Go! 10. Quartz
My top ten; The only unforgivable thing, Dry land, Somewhere ese, Interior lulu, A few words for the dead, The great scape, Gaza, The Leavers, This strange engine, Out of this World.
It’s hard for me to pick up one song and digest it out of the whole group of songs. Marillion s that band where you can’t look to the tree but to the forest. For me it would be an hell of an exercise! Great episode! Your channel is great! Cheers from Portugal 🇵🇹
IMO this is one of your best lists, with excellent analysis of the 10 songs. Seven out of your 10 songs are on my list. I would include Season's End; considering when it was written it has proved to be quite prescient. Also Montreal; I love h's account of the band's trip to Canada with the Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen references (Hasn't Canada produced a large number of exceptional artists?) Sky Above the Rain and Gaza at least honourable mentions. Finally I would rate AOS as their strongest album overall.
Great List honorable mentions ............ * The Space + Berlin + Gaza + Easter + The Great Escape + Bell in the Sea + Waiting to Happen + Alone Again in the Lap of Luxury + Brave + Somewhere Else + No Such Thing + Power + House + King + Paper Lies + The Release + Splintering Heart + A Voice from the Past
There are so many good ones but a few that come to mind are the king of sunset town, Berlin and hooks in you from seasons end, the town trilogy and splintering heart from holidays in Eden and all alone in the lap of luxury and paper lies from brave there are so many great ones from Steve Hogarth and marillion these are just a few of my faves
only ten??but here it goes,in no particular order:King,The New Kings,The Space,Neverland,Gaza,Seasons End, Care,Sounds that cant be made,Afraid of Sunlight,The Great Escape....
I have to be honest and admit that I've always struggled through the Hogarth years of the band. I will be using this video and compiling those tracks (in the same reverse order) and diving head-first in the hope of gaining an elevated perspective into the post Fish era. I'm told that "Brave" and "Marbles" are 'musts'.
2 different bands ‘fish’ era -‘hogarth’ era….nothing will ever top fish era marillion and just for the record (no pun intended) ‘Brave’ is a hard listen i just cant get into it
10. Seasons End 9. The Bell and the Sea 8. This is the 21st Century 7. The Space 6. The Great Escape 5. Neverland 4. Easter 3. The Invisible Man 2. Gaza 1. Ocean Cloud
Virtually impossible to narrow such a vast catalogue down to 10 songs of course, but a really interesting video. I still can’t get as enthusiastic about the whole of the FEAR album as you do. I don’t hate it, but it’s nowhere near as good as the albums at either side of it. For the record, my No1 would be the title track from Afraid of Sunlight, with Beautiful high up in the ranking too.
@@classicalbum yes many do many The Space Berlin Seasons End King This strange engine Quartz Gaza Splintering heart Brave (Album) The crow and the natingale I stop….
I would still put Easter at number 1, and something from Brave in there as well, that album has 2 or 3 contenders for the list, Great escape for example. Another important question would be what's Rothery's best solo?
10 The Crow and the Nightingale. 9 The Leavers. 8 Neverland. 7 Estonia. 6 The Space. 5 Seasons end. 4 Berlin. 3 Afraid of sunlight. 2 Easter. 1 The Great escape.
Lost some interest in this band due mainly to my growing allegiance to Riverside who contain some similar musical characteristics...at least to my ears. However there is no doubting Marillion have created some astounding material. For me the tracks 'Gaza' from the album Sounds That Can't Be Made and This is The New 21st Century from 'Anoraknophobia' are exceptional. However i noticed you reference the band's Afraid Of Sunlight album a few times wherein i believe THAT album is the band's masterpiece.
How interesting it is that your analysation of Neverland is so far away from what this song says/means to me. I think that demonstrates exactly why this band is so unique. King, by the way in my very humble opinion is the most complete, mind blowing, piece of music i have ever heard....And i have Steps greatest hits!

You have done what most Marillion fans could never do. Enjoyed this very much, thank you.
Berlin is a song that comes and goes as a first album track..it still has resonance as one of there greatest songs 👍
After years of being a huge fan of Fish, both with Marrillion and mostly his solo career, after over twenty concerts, drinking Zubrowka with the Man himself, I can say that Marillion's songs with H. evoke more emotions in me today. A fellow "This is the 21st century" enjoyer, nice. My favourite Marillion song of what I've heard thus far.
'My Collection' is beautiful and creepy at the same time.

I would add The Great Escape and Easter, amazing guitar solo on Easter.
I'm not a big Marillion fan, only really being in to Script for a Jester's Tears, but Easter is my favourite Hogarth era song.
Much preferred the early to mid-era:
1. Waiting to happen
2. Afraid of sunlight

for Brave - 'listen loud with the lights off'
@@dave07drummer I will try that. Sounds like fun!
Brave is essential. Afraid of sunlight is s gem.
nice list barry
I won't pretend to a completist of Marillion, for me Gaza, I love the live version of Separated Out.
Anoraknophonia: Between You and me. Great track.
I remember Marillion being absolutely 'on fire' on the anorak tour, saw 2 shows. 👌

Incredible insight! We could debate and revere every choice! I am inviting you to my home - we will eat, drink, and discuss for days!

Yes, indeed

I think it is hard to vote because where are so many fantastic moments in the last 35 years…but you did a goof choice
There are too many great tracks
why I did a ranking of my Top 100 Marillion songs. Spliting hairs between so many though.
@@classicalbum yes many do many
The Space

Would add The great escape ;-)
Marble certainly the best album ever
Oops I did both eras there

I find the whole of brave absolutely fantastic, many you've mentioned are great but for me from FEAR onwards Marillion lost something magical..
What about 10 best fish era songs maybe

Steps?
Yes that's music and Marillion music you can interpret it on so many ways. H has said the begin is written for his first wife
The Uninvited Guest is actually a song about HIV.
HGV I think
No The Space and Easter.
The prog equivalent of dire straits nowadays
Have never liked nor understood the praise to Ocean Cloud - sooo long and boring, prefer all the other songs on Marbles. imo
each to their own, I love the more theatrical storytelling stuff like OC
So you don't have an idea of what Progressive rock is all about....go and listen to Bad Bunny
You had to make it the Hogarth era as we all know the top ten best songs would all be by Fish.
not really
Ignorant
For me the top ten best songs would all be by Hogarth.
I bet $1,000,000 you have not listen any of Hogarth's era albums.......
