Make sure when you compare the rivian you take into consideration that 10-80% (70%) of the lightning 131 KW battery is slightly more than the rivian. So to do apples to apples, you would want to make sure that you deliver the same number of KWh to the rivian as you did to the lightning. My bet is the lightning chargers faster up to 80% than the rivian when the kWh of charge delivered is the same
Is the drop in charging speed after around 80 percent because of scientific reasons or are the charging stations throttling people to encourage them to leave?
It’s physics of the battery. Charge rate slows as the battery reaches full/100% SOC (state of charge). It’s important to respect this with lithium ion batteries because they can explode if over-charged.
I am not sure if this is the charger or Ford for the charge time. Tesla vehicles charge at a much faster rate than this. 10% to 80% is usually less than 30 min on a 150kW charger and 15 min on a 250kW charger. This is enough time to grab a meal or go to the washroom.
Ford needs to improve the charging rate for the Lightning. Our e-tron will hold 150 Kw all the way to 80%, before slowly tapering down...still holding 50Kw at 95%. Audi keeps a buffer in the battery pack to allow for higher charging rates, while preserving battery longevity.
