Justin, this has gotta be one of the best thorough explanations of pico tests i have come across but only my opinion. I love using the pico for this stuff but this just kinda put its over the top for me as far as knowledge and pico know how and what can be seen. Great video!!
What do you call INTELLECTUAL AND PRODIGY and SUBSTANTIAL add one more KNOWLEDGEABLE the answer is Justin Miller Loved it From the start to finish tutorial 👌 video 👍 thank you very much helpful information video Take care and have a great Evening PRODIGY Justin Miller From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧
Justin thank you for the video. Great info and I will definitely go out to my vehicle and capture some data. All your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 👍👍👍
This is called back EMF due to inductions inside the Generator once you turn the key and the load start to draw current the Induction inside the generator to maintain the current flow with try to invert the voltage. Once the inductors are charged there is no fluctuations on the output anymore. Still the ripple are hard to eliminate to 100%.
It is amazing what can be seen from a quick wave form capture if you have a trained eye. To the layman it looks like chicken scratch but to an expert a wealth of information can be gleamed.
Great Video, Content quality is top notch. I work on Agricultural Machinery and heavy plant, Do you think the Pico 2204A with the Pico 200/2000 amp clamp will allow me to perform this test effectively or an I better to invest in a higher quality Pico Scope???
If you plan to do this more than once or twice, I would definitely recommend a higher quality Pico. It will pay for itself over and over! You can check out options on CatchaWave.com. Please call or message through the website if you have questions! Good luck with the diagnostics!
good video and great way of explining but your pico scope beutiful and good technology i have 2 chanel pico scope 2000 serie i stell learning yuo the best my frien
I just did this test with a Pico 2204a and Hantek 650 amp clamp and find that within 5 minutes of the alternator running, the average amperage going into the battery is about -8/-9 amps. The other battery parameters seem good with 9 volt max. pulldown under load, and 12.6 open circuit voltage. You mention at 6:40 that the charge level must be within -5 amps, but I cannot find this specification anywhere else. Would you mind sharing where you found the -5 amp requirement, and do you think its possible that my 2 month old Interstate battery is already starting to fail?
Because the starter current on many cars will spike over 600 amps, I created a custom probe, using the same current clamp, but setting the range at 1000 amps. The clamp doesn't have guaranteed accuracy above 600 amps, but I would still rather be off by a couple of amps than have my waveform clipped at 600 amps. On Pico, this is really easy. I just duplicated the 600 amp current probe, then edited the lookup table in the duplicated probe and renamed the probe.
Loves these video Justin. Question how did you measure almost 1k Amps with a 600a clamp? I didn’t realize it could do that. I added this to my pico favorites on YT nice job brother
How do I measure the RPM of the starter using the current draw wave form ? you mention the minimum is no less the 200. I put the rulers between 4 humps or spikes and it says less than 200 but the car starts
Hello Otilio! You can't measure starter RPM, but you can measure engine cranking RPM. Remember that one revolution of the crankshaft will result in half as many compression strokes as the number of cylinders. For example, on a four-cylinder engine, there will be two compression strokes in one revolution. If the engine starts before you get enough compression humps, you can just measure the time between two "humps," then multiply it. You are right cranking RPM should be between 200-300.
Those voltage ripple, is it possible to smoothing it with capacitor? how many F will significantly reduce it? there's so many device marked as "voltage stabilizer" and it's seems like BS, and most the user review sound like placebo
More videos like this please. You have a great way of explaining in great detail how to break down these waveforms. Thank you for sharing.
Thank-you for the professional video and tutorial. I've used your video multiple times to evaluate my personal vehicles with my new pico scope.
I love this test and use it on every car that needs the electrical system tested. So many details that no battery tester can prove.
This is an awesome video. Thank you for sharing it with us. I have never heard anyone explaining in such detail.

For me it was one of the best explanation about this systems. thanks and please do more videos like this about diesel fuel injector waveform.

your good, You do a lot of simple stuff when showing the results that I need to learn. thanks.
Love the detail you put in this video. Do you have any others juast as detailed. Like compresion, injector, ect. Ect.. ect..
Justin thank you for the video. Great info and I will definitely go out to my vehicle and capture some data. All your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 👍👍👍
That is an amazing amount of information for such a simple test. Thanks!
This is a great video. I love the in depth analysis. Thank you for sharing.

Will definitely try to do this capture. Great info an very informative. Thank you 😊
Great explanations for 5 min patren 👌

That’s fantastic. What kind of voltage and current probe and software did you use?
Where can I buy everything that you used in this test?
It's pico automotive test equipment. AES wave, AutoNerdz sell them
Great video Man, keep up the great work ! You had a 600 amp current clamp, but 1000amp spike ?

I have a video explaining how to do that: th-cam.com/video/tZXZ1h_mEnw/w-d-xo.html. I hope it helps!
Can someone explain why the battery charging current negative when the alternator begins to start charging.can the negative current charge the battery

is there some written tutorial on do this type of test?
Those voltage ripple, is it possible to smoothing it with capacitor? how many F will significantly reduce it? there's so many device marked as "voltage stabilizer" and it's seems like BS, and most the user review sound like placebo
The battery acts like a cap. The ripple is already heavily reduced down to just a few hundred mV. Versus the several volts when running open circuit.
I like this because it new to me and question it South ware for it in the computer??????
thank for video
how transfer my picoscope Library settings to my new computer
Very informative video but i think the autoscope better then pico scope what you think?
I have never used an autoscope, so I can't answer that question. Sorry!
Please check this channel on TH-cam autoscope Technology
Tashfeen Azhar Javaid autoscopes are really nice but this is a charging video, not a scope comparison but I did hear good things
I hope to one day say this is an "easy test" to do 🥴😅
It just takes a little repetition. You will get there!
It's a shame you fast-forwarded through the 5 minutes of idle time, I was really looking forward to it!
