Why Keith Jackson isn't recognized more for his baseball pbp excellence is beyond my comprehension. I always looked forward to his classic descriptions.
At 1:32:55 they show a little kid sitting in the crowd. That's me!! No one I knew had a VCR back then so I have never seen this before (people just told me they saw me on TV). Thanks for uploading.
Thanks for posting this. In Tempe Arizona, in the middle of the sports-starved desert, I picked the Pirates as my favorite team at age 10 in '74. I watched this series sitting cross-legged in front of our tiny 9" Sony and loved it. I adored Stargell. The next year, grounded and at home, I watched the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey game from the same spot. I wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't been grounded. Add to this the '76 Suns/Celtics series and those four Steeler Super Bowl victories. It was a breathtaking time for this young sports fan.
Thanks for posting this. I was at this game. When Al Bumbry ran out to the third base line during the line-up announcements, that was the loudest crowd noise I have ever heard.
A couple of notes. First, the 5 runs scored by the Orioles in the first inning of Game 1 set a record for runs scored in the first inning of the first game of a World Series, a record that still stands today. That 5-run outburst led to what was to be the only win for the Orioles in front of their home crowd in the 1979 World Series (the Pirates also won only one of their home games in the '79 World Series, as the home teams combined to lose 5 of the 7 games in that series). Also, the field conditions for the four games played at Memorial Stadium in that World Series were among the worst in modern World Series history, and would play a significant role in the deciding of the series later on. Those poor conditions were due to two things. The first was the bad weather. Game 1 was delayed a day by snow, which in turn meant that the first five games were played without a travel day. The other major reason why the field conditions why the field conditions for the games played in Baltimore was so poor was that the Colts had home games, both just prior to the start of the World Series, and during the time when the World Series was in Pittsburgh. Those two things combined to create those miserable playing conditions.
Interesting observation. The home team won just three of the seven games played. The '79 WS was a very strange series to say the least, starting with the weather. It was actually snowing the morning of this game. This is Baltimore in early October, where daytime temps are usually in the upper seventies to low eighties. The nights are very comfortable, where one can sleep with the windows open. Not in 1979 though. The winter of 79-80 was one of the coldest on record. It's also worth noting that the newer facility with better lighting (Three Rivers) hosted the day games, while the older facility with poor lighting (Memorial Stadium) hosted the night games. Still, the '79 WS is my all time favorite, even better than '86.
With a starting rotation like the one the Orioles had back in the 70's they should have never lost that world series.. that one hurt a lot of Baltimore fans.
I am soo glad to see that someone understand how good the Orioles were they should have won at least two World Series before 1983 victory I think Earl Weaver was over rated no way the Pirates should have won this series I remember this like yesterday. This Series was a heart break for me but it was one of the best series ever played though it does not get the billing .
I was at Jack Murphy stadium that year to see the Pirates and Padres play 19 or was it 16 innings where the Bucs won. Stargel mentioned that game in his book. Good old days.
Here we are forty years later and I am enjoying listening to Keith Jackson, Don Drysdale and Howard Cosell. They called the game but they didn't shove it down your throat like they do today. No on field advertisements, when something happens on the field, they don't always show the players on the bench's reaction. And my favorite, the Orioles left their ace in the game. Today, he probably would have been in the 6th inning or sooner. I miss the complete game.

I’m glad that baseball and football games don’t entertwine anymore because the field conditions were in the crapper in Baltimore Perhaps even cost them the series.
Los piratas tenían cuatro uniformes. Blanco con rayas negras en el pantalón. Amarillo completo. Negro completo y blanco con rayas en camisa y pantalón. Y a veces como en este juego los mezclaban
1. Those uniforms! (nowadays, the Pirates do the gold jersey/black pants combo for their Sunday home games; while the Orioles wear orange jerseys every Saturday) 2. I do recall my parents telling me it did snow the morning of game 1 3. Earl Weaver would not follow sabermetrics; he'd ride his starter all the way!
My uncle was caring for my cousin who was 6 months old at the time (his wife at the time worked second shift). He said he was watching it and seeing how cold it was, he said he was glad he was in his nice warm house at the time.

I am sorry. But I must say this. And it's what we all are thinking. You look at this World Series. You look at the orange. And the black. And the yellow. And the smiling bird. And the throwback early 20th century pillbox hat. And the stirrups. God the stirrups. Strong orange stirrups. Strong black stirrups. Not slouchy. Not looking like a wrinkly unkempt set of pajamas. You look at all of that. And you just have to say it: This. Is. One. Of. The. Greatest. Color. Schemes. In. World. Series. History!!! Ah-heh-heh-heh! He could go all. the. way! Back to you Dandy Don!
There was nothing shitty about the weather! That's when weather was normal! But I guess you wouldn't know anything about that, living in this era of global warming and climate change! So you are forgiving for your ignorance!🤡
Yes, it's not relevant to bring up the drug issues of the 1980s when talking about the 1979 World Series. The Pirates and every MLB team had several players who either experimented, or used drugs during this era. It was everywhere in pro sports, and many college athletes also became involved.
What a god awful field and ballpark. Disgraceful that this was a major league ballpark and professionals actually had to play a World Series in this. The pecos league had better fields probably

Banjo hitters, LOL, you must be thinking about the Orioles Tekulve blew em all away and made them look amateurish, and Candy out pitched Palmer in game 6, "choke" choke", cough" cough".... The Orioles had some weak players who failed, Dauer let Parker's hit get by him in game 6 that was very costly, and Weaver was out managed by Tanner in Game 7 it was meant to be for Pittsburg just like 1971..
No one was a bigger Oriole fan than I was and I'll tell you right here and now they choked. It would have been nice to have Lee in the lineup, but Murray going hitless in the last 5 games killed us. Murray was crucial in a lineup of habitual non-producers like DeCinces and Bumbry. When he didn't hit, we didn't score. And if the most overrated manager in the history of baseball didn't dick around with that bum Stanhouse in the second game, we might have swept the thing. But that's all in the past.

Absolutely
Both uniforms are beautiful!
This is what makes youtube great...gems like this...this is classic.
You got that right, hoss.
Best uniform combos in world series history.

Keith Jackson RIP. He was one of my all time favorite announcers for a world series one of the all time greats.
Today we have Joe Buck....puke!!
He was great doing baseball as well.
24:23 Doug DeCinces hits a home run in his very first World Series at-bat, same as how his great predecessor Brooks Robinson did in 1966.
Thanks for posting this. I was at this game.

My favorite baseball moment being born and raised in Pittsburgh it's been a long time
I saw Stargell taking BP in Atlanta when I was a kid = It was an awesome Upper Deck Display of some Rocket Shots.

should have doesn't count for anything. They lost
Damn it you ruining the ending!
They lost because they went into a hitting slump the last three games.....they shouldn't have lost, but they did
Hurt me I’ll tell ya that😖. Had to wait till 83 to take out the Phillies. 😋
Thank you for the first game of the MCMLXXIX world series, mister alexander!

Thank you so much for posting this!
The first world series I remember as a little dude. I was five.
These guys had some very beautiful wives.
Yes they did!👍
Quite the uniform matchup
Both teams unis are outstanding.
Looks like Reeces Pieces and Corn Candy had some fun together.
@@jkckmarcumful yes i agree and a great ws too
Makes me miss the sleeveless Pirates uniforms of 2001-08. The uniforms in this game are both ugly as shit.
First WS I watched
Flanagan would also pitch amazing for the Blue Jays in '87.
Love hearing Cosell.
Same here. He and Jackson worked well together on the baseball. Both are my favorite boxing announcers.

RIP Keith JACKSON
Jackson was very underrated. Loved him and Cosell together.
Wow the field at Memorial stadium is the worst ive seen.
Thank you. That was a great game 7.

I wish the Orioles would go back to this 1979 Orange! The orange jerseys now seem too light in color.

I agree, and also like their 1979 road greys as well...
Lately I’ve been nostalgic for the 2001-08 Pirates sleeveless uniforms. The uniforms in this game are ugly.

Yes, game 7 is on here.
Man, could you imagine if Stargell hit it out in the bottom of the 9th? This series would have ended after 6 games.
