Fascinating to hear Arthur's perspective on growing up a Marx. I love his detailed memories of his father and uncles. He came by storytelling naturally.
Arthur Marx seems such a down to earth man, as does Skip. Lovely intimate interview. .Thanks for posting. Never seen either men before but HUGE fan of Grouch & bros!
He was one of the big inspirations for the character, which was mentioned by Skip's longtime rep Alan Eichler. Originally Skip was quite peeved about it, later he became rather proud of it. Frequently mentioned it in interviews.
His Dad, Groucho was born in 1890 and The Marx Brothers were traveling the country on the vaudeville circuit in their prime years. Their first big movie was "Coconuts" in 1929, when Groucho was already 39 years old.
Fantastic video upload. I ordered Arthur's bio on Red Skelton (hard cover) from Amazon used, and rather rare after reading his excellent and revealing biography on Bob Hope. Always wanted to hear the man talk and this is a quality video interview both visually and the content. Opens up a whole new world for those not familiar with Arthur on a personal level. The man can talk as well as write! Enjoyed it.
Harpo wasn't "dumb", but he wasn't really literate. He wrote phonetically, and didn't spell well. Example: Playing "Mystery Murder" with Woolcott, everybody knew who it was because he wrote "Ur Ded". But he was a true musician, a warm human, smart where it counted. He was a thinker and he enjoyed other people. His wit and unabashed humor made him a natural for the Algonquin Roundtable. He never held back. Harpo was a delicious person; warm, all love, giving.
Frankly, I don't know how Arthur got through this interview without bopping Lowe on the chin. The guy doesn't shut up and doesn't listen to the answers his subject gave him. My mom drank to excess, she and dad would fight, dad would be depressed, and my sister and I wanted to get out of there. Was it a happy home? Good Lord.
When Harpo played his harp it was a dream it was Well, if someone else can do it how come nobody does? Groucho, Groucho, fast as light Some talk like him, but not quite And when Harpo would play his harp, all was still, still.
Interesting how, while Groucho and his brothers had very noticeable New York City accents, one can tell that Arthur didn't grow up there, as his accent is much harder to identify. He grew up in California.
My father's family moved to CA from KS in 1927 when he was 12. So, not a native (as I am) but well "naturalized." He would often say in regard to U.S. regional accents "You can always spot a Californian because we sound like we're from nowhere."
Arthur just gets though telling Lowe that his dad was tired and depressed because of his wife's alcohol problems, and her wanting to always go out on the town and Grouch preferring a sedentary life, and then the Skipper looks at Arthur and says "Was it a happy house"??/ are you kidding me Skipper??...its like a line from a Marx Bros movie...quite obvious that the Skipper wasn't even listening....who the hell is the skipper anyway????
daniel lack Some "interviewers" just do not know when to be quiet and listen to the answer to the question they or their scriptwriter has written. It is as if they thi nk people want to listen to them rather than their guest. As an Englishman I have not heard of this interviewer but I have heard to much of him already.
No it's not. "Long Island" is Nassau and Suffolk. But Brooklyn, Queens along with Nassau and Suffolk are all located physically on Long Island, so Queens is technically "on" long Island because it's the same land mass. Just not politically part of Nassau or Suffolk county.
I can't believe Skip E. Lowe is still alive and doing his Public Access interviews. Back in '91 and '92, I operated camera on some of his shows when he was shooting them out of the now defunct BHTV in Beverly Hills. And Arthur Marx went to Beverly also. Nice.
@unclejuniorsoprano read Raised Eyebrows by Steve Stoliar, and Groucho by Hector Arce. Great reads, and they were both there for the end of the Fleming Groucho debacle.
Imagine having Groucho Marx as your dad. Arthur probably never had a dull moment in his upbringing
Arthur is such a down to earth person

pamla motown i agree...BTW. nice to see such a classy comment
Skip E. Lowe must be the inspiration for Jiminy Glick. Must be.
+Frank Bähr
I AGREE. very perceptive.
He was one of the big inspirations for the character, which was mentioned by Skip's longtime rep Alan Eichler. Originally Skip was quite peeved about it, later he became rather proud of it. Frequently mentioned it in interviews.
Chris Johnson
cool!
Aren’t you kind?!
My thought exactly as soon as the interview began
I knew his personal barber, who enjoyed working with Groucho, who said he enjoyed flirting with the ladies and Groucho was a fun man to be around.
His Dad, Groucho was born in 1890 and The Marx Brothers were traveling the country on the vaudeville circuit in their prime years. Their first big movie was "Coconuts" in 1929, when Groucho was already 39 years old.

I knew Skip pretty well.... Great guy... Miss him... RIP, Skip....
Fascinating interview, I want some more!
Skip E. Lowe...Often imitated but never duplicated!
Jiminy Glick comes awfully damn close 😉

Great Interview...

Good Lord.
GoldTopSlinger exactly!
I was thinking the same thing, very annoying
he looks like his father..
When Harpo played his harp it was a dream it was
Well, if someone else can do it how come nobody does?
Groucho, Groucho, fast as light
Some talk like him, but not quite
And when Harpo would play his harp, all was still, still.
That copy of the proof of the book with annotations by Groucho would have been worth a bit now.
Good interview all around. Want to see all the interviews the negative commenters have done. Please show us . Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely … spot on 🤣
I would love to have read Groucho's corrections of Arthur's book to see where they disagreed.
Skip E. Glick !! ....
Good interview. I would have like to know about Groucho's relationship with Erin, however, and more about Melinda.
There's one BIG difference between this guy and Glick. Glick was real. LoL
Interesting how, while Groucho and his brothers had very noticeable New York City accents, one can tell that Arthur didn't grow up there, as his accent is much harder to identify. He grew up in California.

Shades of Martin Short.
Jiminy Glick.
@@0IDaveCouch The interviewer not Arthur Marx
Martin short sucks!!!
Son of Groucho is my favorite book. I’m a voracious reader, mostly history and biography. There are 2 books I re-read every year Gatsby and S of G.
Skip was an annoying interviewer BUT he had some very fascinating guests = i.e. ones you'd never see anywhere else
That's who Martin Short got Jiminy Glick from
I noticed that he kept saying he was a good father...glad he wasn't like most Hollywood kids.
skip is VERY LUCKY he wasn't interviewing groucho
Very cool, enjoyed that!
arthur marx was the brothers' greatest biographer
Aurther Marx passed away on 4/14/2011 :-(
I love hearing about Groucho Marx. Thanks. When was this?
I reckon Skip provided Jiminy Glick with a fair bit of inspiration.....
Didn't even ask him about the hit play he co-wrote in the 60s, "The Impossible Years."

Just a dick
What a difference compared to the other son interview on Letterman
Jiminy Glick!
Astoria is in Queens parts of NYC but one of the 4 counties on long island
No it's not. "Long Island" is Nassau and Suffolk. But Brooklyn, Queens along with Nassau and Suffolk are all located physically on Long Island, so Queens is technically "on" long Island because it's the same land mass. Just not politically part of Nassau or Suffolk county.
He sounds like his Daddy to me.
"Tell me about Harpo. What kinda guy was he?"
"He was quiet."
Genius insight.
There's an interview with his son on here. His son wrote a book about him and he was also a wonderful father.
I sure that Arthur meant that off stage Harpo was quiet as well a little bit like his character rather than being a loudmouth you know the opposite
Coffee out nose. Well played.
I didn't see your comment before I made mine....
He looks like his dad when groucho was older.
This was interesting. Is there more to this interview?
Looks and sounds like his dad.
Understanding son. Loved the Marx Bros. LOL
I wonder if Skip ever knew Martin Short did that parody of him as Jiminy Glick and recognized it was him that he's "doing"
ha
i thought that too
I can't believe Skip E. Lowe is still alive and doing his Public Access interviews. Back in '91 and '92, I operated camera on some of his shows when he was shooting them out of the now defunct BHTV in Beverly Hills.
And Arthur Marx went to Beverly also. Nice.
He comes off as half-sincere. Hidden animosity.
marty short nailed this interviewer
He sounds like his sister Miriam.
That’s it? Come on I wanted to hear more.
Yeah. Right. Uhuh. Yeah. Mhm. Right. Yeah. Right right right. Mhm. I see. Yeah, yeah. Uhuh.
Oh, I can see the Jiminy Glick here. He is based on this guy.
geez gotta be discouraging to be nearly sued by your parent whether it's a famous guy or not! :(
Absoultely thinking the same thing.
Jiminy Glick !
Quiet skip
@unclejuniorsoprano read Raised Eyebrows by Steve Stoliar, and Groucho by Hector Arce. Great reads, and they were both there for the end of the Fleming Groucho debacle.
Pity it isn't the whole interview.
groucho wrote 3 books on himself back in the 50s and 60's . he was a terrible father and the kids tortured him at death.
Skip E. Lowe's wiki bio proves he inspired Martin Short's Jiminy Glick
Skip E. Lowe can be see playing a flaming hairdresser stereotype in the Blaxploitation film, Black Shampoo.
He sorta looks like step pep..
child star.
Jimminy Gluck?
yes, thats where he got it
Not trying to be mean in anyway but is this a man interviewing Groucho’s son or is it a woman
Looked and sounded like an ugly old dame.
Seventh Mist 👏👏👏😂😑😂😂
I had to look up Skip E. Lowe to get that question answered myself. It is a man.
@@texasmimi5566 😂😂😂
The VERY first Marx Brothers Film was a now forgotten silent, titled "Humoresque" directed by Frank Borzage in 1919 no know copy exists!
Here it is :-)
th-cam.com/video/x60R6q9Yy44/w-d-xo.html
The Marx Brothers first film was a silent movie called humour risk
kindo makes harpo sound dumb....disagree.
This is the first I've seen and heard of Skip Lowe. He's annoying.
He's just imitating Jiminy Glick.
Gee why doesn't this Skip shut up!
He interrupts too much.. hence why we never heard of him..
No he wasn't a womaniser. One at a time lol
Hey, "Oprah" is on in 23 minutes! Hurry!
Go ahead, Kid, air your dirty laundry so everybody can see it. Skip Lowe sure aint no Allan King as an interviewer.
Fascinating. Groucho was witty, sarcastic and a tad mysogonistic With a miserable alcoholic wife.
