I absolutely love Gene, totally underrated band and deserved much more commercial success. Please have a listen to “where are they now” “Sleep well to tonight” “London, can you wait” “Truth rest your head” Amazing live band! Great channel btw 👍
Gene are fantastic. Smiths-y, jangly guitars, Martin Rossiter’s Morrissey-esque voice, strings, quality rhythm section and great production. Every time I remember to listen to them it strikes me how much bigger they should’ve been.
Oct 22 1995 & May 6, 1997, Montreal, I gave it my all for you... Met Martin the Silk Cut-chain-smoker on that beautiful spring Friday afternoon round my twentieth birthday as I was buying tickets for his gig that very same night. I was with my lovely gf N and saw this classy-looking bloke playing pool by himself, mid-afternoon at the back of the Foufs, near the bathroom, all alone, so I invited him to have a beer with us, and introduced him as Martin, to which N replied: you been friends for long?
Martin Rossiter was my hero in 1995. Gene were AMAZING live. Sadly they all hate each other now. You should react to Geneva, they were around in the Brit Pop era too (and it was much more varied era than you would think, some Brit Pop was very out there)
Awesome Nick. I know I've rattled on about gene a few times. The whole Olympian album is excellent and you'll find other tracks have a Smith's influence for sure. Next I'd urge some Mansun from the same era. Being a girl (full version) should give you an idea. Good work.
I second giving Geneva a listen. Tranquilizer is a mighty slice of mid-90s indie pop, but No One Speaks is probably their best known track. Gene is a good band to dig into - Sleep Well Tonight especially.
The Olympian album has a very jangly Marr feel. You happened to choose one of the least influenced track. Haunted by You(my fave track) and Left-Handed will better inform you the the range of their sound. They also had a wealth of amazing B-side tracks during their first and second album. If curious, you’ll have a grand ol time discovering some beautiful music.
Martin always detested the comparison with The Smiths and played down any links. I love Gene and Martin who I always found one of the nicest guys around. The album 'Olympian' is wall to wall greatness but personally I feel 'Drawn to the Deep End' is a beautiful record where love songs focus on need and safety rather than the traditional angles and is my favorite. 'Revelations' has good songs, but ramped up the political message in a very blunt way, and their final album 'Libertine' is exquisite, has real emotional depth and I believe was Martins favorite but the muted reception at the time, clamour for the old hits and the fear of becoming an end-of-pier self-tribute act playing the same songs year on year brought the band to an end. It's a great LP though. As is Martin's solo album 'The Defenestration of St Martin', which is (aside from one song) just Martin on Piano and its beautiful. Work your way through those records and you will see they are distance away from The Smiths, or any other band. One of the best live bands at the time too. Miss them a lot.

Amazing live band!
Great channel btw 👍
Awesome band
Great voice Martin Rossiter. Gorgeous lyrics
“How Much For Love” by Gene is just greatness! Also, their song “Somewhere In The World” is pretty fantastic too.
Takes me back to the 90's. Listening to Jo Wiley and Steve Lamac on Radio1.
Oh man brilliant. Great tune but I consider We Could Be Kings their masterpiece
Sleep well tonight has always been my favourite of theirs.
If we are going down a gene rabbit hole, hit op “for the dead”

Great band Gene, give ‘London can you wait’ a listen, another fine song.
Sleep well tonight and fighting fit are crackers too.
I used to love that song.

Check out 'Haunted by you' by Gene..that's just superb.

The best gig I've ever been to was Gene around this time.
Gene! ❤

Oh, Olympian, the album version is quite different which explains the lyric discrepancy.
Yes 💪
Gene: Speak to me someone....
Always loved this guy voice. Here's one for you from 1990 Big by New Fast Automatic Daffodils.

Excellent song from an underrated band. Try reacting to the band Razorlight and the song Golden Touch.
