    I only started sewing in November 2017 and cant understand why everyone was using rotary cutters, as i thought they were rubbish! i don't get a clean cut and end up rolling over it about 3 or 4 times, using scissors was easier!! i even changed the blade quite a few times, it doesn't even cut cotton lawn in one swipe! when i saw this report of yours,, i thought i treat myself to an early birthday present and brought a Gingher... OMG it's the best thing ever!! i don't need Hercules' strength to use it. well worth the money hands down! Thank you Jennifer for this!! i actually never heard of this brand before... Please recommend more useful and tested gadgets.

      So glad you are loving your Gingher!!! I'm a huge fan and agree that it is well worth the money!!!

      Oh my..my experience exactly. I had 2 different ones, new, out of the package and couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t cut, even going over the fabric several times.

    I can attest to the cutting capacity of the olfa - it removed the top of my finger (including nail bed) beautifully. A nice clean cut...

    I just buoght exactly the same rotary cutter today and i love it , i don’t have to put any pressure on it to cut, it give me a clean cut since the first time.

    I got this for the purpose of the pinking and love it. Could list many reasons why my experience is different from yours Jennifer but for the price and the amount of blades it's worth the try and if you don't like it, send it back to Amazon. I give it 5 stars.

      For sure - you can't beat the price. It's not quite comparable to my Gingher but to have a spare with the pinking blade - I'm good with that!

    You all have some great points! It really is all about the blade.

    • @SewingReport

      Overall I'm definitely fine with both, just gotta apply some pressure!

      I use olfa with platinum blade...I’m in a sewing group. I rave how wonderful it is, they try it and one said thats like cutting through butter.

      I did also. The blades were hit and miss. One brand new blade was sooooo dull, but some are so sharp that I don’t need to put any upper body strength into them at all. I can cut through my squares with total ease, even while seated, doing star legs in assembly line fashion.

    Hey Jennifer! I have a fiskars rotary cutter that I use for the pinking blade. You can find the fiskars brand at JoAnn’s, including the replacement pinking blades. The handle of the fiskars is the same as the inexpensive cutter you demo here. I love having a rotary cutter that is specifically used for the pinking. I don’t have to continually switch back and forth between blades as you noted would be laborious with that particular cutter. My other rotary cutter is a “splash” model. I can’t remember who manufactures it but it’s great for me!

      This one is doing okay so I'll definitely keep it, but it's neat to see what everyone prefers.

    The black disk from the back side if the handle goes under the pinking blade on the cutting side. It's a spacer to allow the blade to move more freely to do the job.
    HTH others who come across this video. (Search Olfa Deluxe Rotary cutter, because the generic is its doppelganger.)

    I have a KAI rotary cutter than I keep a pinking blade on - it's probably more $ than the one you're using but you do want a decent cutter. I fear these inexpensive alternatives for as you say safety reasons. I bought the Gingher on your recommendation Jennifer and love it!

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Kathleen - right now I am trying to stay on track budget wise so the Amazon one will be fine for now. It did pretty well when I placed a bit more pressure on it, and that's easier to do standing than sitting like I was.

    I have a fiskars and it’s not helping me. I am trying through two layers though. Is it not meant for layers or is it my cutter that isn’t up to the task?

    The black "button" goes between the exterior button and the blade I think!

    I think my rotary cutters weren't working because I was tightening the screw too much, so the blade wasn't rotating? I just now found out about this hunting around on TH-cam. I guess companies assume everyone already knows this!

    IT seemed when using the normal straight blade it was maybe as good as the expensive one?

    I saw a hack to use the handheld can opener to trim away the sealed edge on those difficult packages.

    Go to Amazon and look for rotary cutter curved blade and you will find the pinking shears blades.

    I also want to get a pinking rotary cutter, but I guess I will invest in another for that purpose then. Anyone who can recommend me a favourite of theirs?

    • @SewingReport

      The one I used worked pretty well and had a decent price. It's a solid option.

    • @missmatti

      Sewing Report it just seemed like the ‘straight’ normal blade worked so much better! But then on the other hand I would have two in one and the handle looks really good.

      Fiskars makes a nice pinking blade that fits the Gingher as well.

    Why are you not using a rotary cutting board? That would help with your rotary cutter cutting action. Also save your counter top or table top.

      That entire blue surface is actually a 36 x 48 inch self-healing cutting mat

    I think it is more about the blade itself, not the tool itself.

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really do like the way the cheaper handle feels, and the blades seem sufficient so far.

    its all in the BLADES. too thin a blade it wobbles, "use sturdy blade.". I like simple retracing blade when not in use handle, also like a small handle/small blade cutter. Japan blades are very good. Simple handle is lighter & better to control.
