I saw my first '67 Z/28 in the spring of 1967 in the small town my grandparents lived in. I was smitten by it. It was orange with black stripes. Fast forward to 1970 and the owner, who had a gas station, had it for sale. It was under a tarp. I was 18. I had the money to buy it as I had worked my tail off at a factory. I informed my dad of my plans. He sold insurance. When I told him about the car, he started yelling about a high performance surcharge and underwriters. He told me that there was no way I was going to buy it if I planned on living at home anymore. I didn't have the money to buy it and move out as I was paying for my own college. So, I had to pass. Even now, I still think about it.
Many years back I was interested in a 69 Z for sale the owner took me out for a test drive we were barely out of his drive way and we were almost sideways the only thing in the rearview was smoke from the tires.... what a thrill. This 67 is a beautiful example of when cars weren't made by cookie cutters
Not really it's easy to make a clone and with even subtle mods will vastly out perform a real one. You can pick up nice V8 driver today starting around $20k today, granted a real SS or Z/28 with documentation will cost double that easily. Plus modifying a random V8 or I6 car is guilt free, and many already have been swapped to a 350 which is a way better street engine with decent torque.

It was always my understanding that all the 67 were base models, with Z\28 performance parts. Was the RS package dealer added? The MO 302 really was the Corvette L76 with a 283 crank. The early 68's used the same engine the later ones got a different M casting, I forget the letter but it uses a 350 larger journal 4 bolt main block and aside from the casting number identical to the DZ used in 69'. The Duntov 30-30 cam is not the same cam used in the race cars which used an off road race cam, though the OTC cross ram used on the race cars will add a few ponies up top. Hot Rod magazine tested the DZ and made 356@6700 and a underwhelming 333lb-ft@4400. Tested back in the day that was good for mid to high 14's, not really any quicker than the base SS 350. With the cross ram installed they could run high 13's suggesting it added about about 50hp at the engine. Just adding a set of headers with the cross ram would likely get one into the mid 13's and putting HP around 450. The 302's are the only GM engines that made more HP past the 6500 red line in stock form. So it made about the same HP as the L76 327 by spinning faster but less torque do to the shorter stroke. For those wondering Hot Rod also tested the Boss 302 and it made 372hp@6800 and 325lb-ft@4200, the SBC heads just didn't flow as well as the Cleveland type heads which flow about the same as rectangle port BBC heads.
