The snow is fun. I like winter time. I'm in Alberta. And it gets to -40c (-40F) at times. You get used to it. You acclimate to it. It's becomes normal.

Hi. I am a Finnish girl so I also live in the north, but it is interesting that the climate is a bit different because of the gulf stream and such. Like my town is above Yellowknife in latitude. The leaves come in May in my town and it start to get minus (Celsius) degrees in November. I am a nerd so I googled cities in the north and searched for Yellowknife and found this video. Well filmed, good job. I wish I had money to travel to north Canada.

I have to say 2 things. First, thanks for taking me to a place I've always wanted to visit. Second, you guys picked a brutal time of year to do this little adventure. But, at least you didn't have to share your blood with the "skeeters."
A road trip isn't complete without a stop at Mickey D's/Ronald's House/Golden Arches Supper Club.
Lastly, as an older person, thanks for your decency--no 4-letter words from any of you.

I’ve followed North American weather stats back 50-60 years. Yellowknife used to be colder than it is now. Climate change has had its greatest effects in far north latitudes. So, although it’s still a cold winter, it’s a lot more liveable than before. And what a pretty place! Look at the purity of that snow.

Not that I'm at death's door or anything, but I can't afford to be on remote Arctic roads with no medical care nearby. If I ever visit Yellowknife, I'll have to fly in. I drove the same route to Yellowknife from Waterloo, Ontario, then south again via Dawson Creek then via the Alaska Hwy to Inuvik, then drove the MacKenzie River Ice road to Tuktoyaktuk. I delivered juices, pop and a few computers for the kids, I was alone and slept out 9 nights of the 21 days I was on the trip. The Dempster is incredible, I driven it both in winter and summer.

Surprised they didn't see more wildlife. When I drove the road between Hay River and Fort Smith in 1971, we saw a huge number and a huge variety. Some call Wood Buffalo the Serengeti of the North.
Another thing, did you notice on the sign when Fort Chipweyan was founded? 1788. How could that be? Its actually the first European settlement in Alberta, way up there. The answer is the fur trade. It was founded by Roderick MacKenzie, cousin and good friend of the man for whom the MacKenzie River is named, and, as it happens, my several greats uncle.

After watching this video, I did this trip in my stock 2003 Cadillac Escalade with a set of winter tires last Feburary back when I was living in Fort McMurray! We loved the drive from Fort Mac up to the end of the winter roads north of Fort MacKay but found the drive long and tedious after leaving the national park and driving on the gravel / pavement up to Yellowknife via Fort Smith. The highway up is really rough and was super icy / sketchy. It also snowed a ton while were on the road and was pushing snow with my front bumper on the way home haha!

My piano teacher and her husband are going to Calgary, Fort Smith, Hay River and Yellowknife the first two weeks of August. The bugs will still be pretty bad, so I told her to tuck her pant cuffs into her socks (it works!) She also doesn’t want to camp unless it’s a 4-star hotel, but there’s not a whole lot up there. She and her younger sister were born in Three Hills, Alta. (about an hour and a half east then north of Calgary, about 50 km from Drumheller) but moved back here to Hamilton, Ont. when they were 3 and 1 respectively.

Awesome video Luke. I've been wanting to visit Yellowknife for a long time now. I'm from the states, specifically Missouri. I've driven to Edmonton and back before and spent some time in Jasper. I've been to many of the major cities in Canada and love them all. Halifax and Yellowknife are still on my list. Recently we all had some extreme temps and I checked Yellowknife one night and they were resting at -50 F (-45.5 C) with wind chill at -63 F (-52.7 C). I couldn't imagine how cold you all must have been. Where I lived we only got down to about -25 F (-31 C) overnight. Glad you all survived. Looked like a great time. Can't wait to see it for myself one day, but I'll probably fly up in the summer.

Live in the very north of Norway myself, north of 70° N - enjoy it both summer and winter!

Recently experienced -25 degree's with a -45 degree windchill. There's something about the brutal cold. I'm in awe of the people who live in this environment.

Great video!. Made me laugh. Have not been that far north but I have been to Saskatoon with my Canadian wife to visit in-laws in the winter and we had temps at -50 for several days. Walking on the snow sounded like styrofoam squeeking all the time.

just wait for summer, they're quite dense from july-september, being right next to great slave lake doesn't help the situation!
