- My newest son Jay is Chinese. His favorite artist is Jay Chou. I watch the video for "Rice Field", "Fragrance of Rice" or "Rice Field Fragrance? They were all the same video. Jay told me it is sometimes hard to translate exactly from Mandarin to English. I am listening to the songs my Jay grew up with and i think it helps me get to know him better. This is my daughter Ari and Jay's youtube page.

He then goes back hometown and self-reflect on his life and finds the real meaning of life. The song is to cheer people up. Like Erika said before, the video was showed the guy losing his job at the beginning, and he's obviously having trouble coping and he just wanted to be left alone. Eventually a trip to his hometown was able to remind him of simpler days and helped him to open up again. The song was intended as a motivational piece for people who are down on their luck to pick themselves back up again, while also taking the opportunity to look back on happier days and think about what truly matters to them. Jay was singing and appealing people to remember and relive the simple, joyful life of childhood (expressed through the man in the video) and find their own identity/happiness again.
Background: Taiwanese culture was heavily influenced by Japanese culture. You can find similar stories about overworked Japanese office workers too. It also reflect how Asia was influenced by Western culture and people grew up in country town and rural area might end up getting a job in a big corporate and living a life they or their parents are not familiar with.
