Listen to the reverberation at the beginning of "Hosanna." This might be my favorite pieces of music. This, and the Hindemith Symphony for winds. I love atonal music :)

I remember when this came out, I heard much criticism. One NY critic claimed that all Lloyd-Jones' music sounded the same. Well so do most composers except perhaps Mozart. It is called finding your style!
Anyway, I predicted that this piece of music will still be heard in 200 years, 30 years later it is still great and going strong.
Time for a new version. Maybe Villazon singing the tenor role?

That is totally a Yamaha DX7 playing during the Hosanna.. its amazing how ALW managed to flawlessly work in a synthesizer into a classical requiem.

I agree with you Emily. One's opinion is important.

Hosanna is my favorite part of this concert as well. Placido Domingo rocking out! It's high time more "serious" composers started using drum kits in an orchestra. Quite an amazing instrument when you think about it, compared to occasional snare rat-at-tat or timpani roll you usually hear with orchestra.
I'm sorry to say I loathe show music or musical theater, but Webber's Requiem is stunning.

Our choir just did this 2 days ago to a sell-out crowd. It's very challenging to do because most of it is on a whole tone scale and parts are extremely dissonant. But once you get the hang of it, it is quite beautiful and emotional. Kudos to these young boys who mastered it. Need I say that Placido Domingo and Sara Brightman are perfection personified although Sara did sound a little forced on the double high note. My thought is that forcing that note has now caused her to lose the beautiful sound she once had.

de gustibus non disputandum est - you are welcome to your opinion. To me, this is not even remotely in a class with the masterpiece Requiems of Verdi, Berlioz, and Mozart.

Some of us have, actually. There's nothing wrong, however, with giving an opinion about someone's voice - regardless if they have "performed" or not. So long as its honest and without insulting the artist.

Good job, that's called an opinion. It feels good when we express them. Just remember, your's means about as little as the rest of ours.

Da..asa-i,e tare gresit.

Well, as a budding singer, I really cannot critique Anna Netrebko's choice in wanting to broaden her range. According to my teacher, as long as you have the correct techinque and its within your natural range (your not pushing past your boundaries), then there is nothing wrong with it. I don't think Sarah Brightman is stagnant, however lately (within the past decade) she does seem to be putting on more of a show rather than using her natural voice to be the showcase itself. It is distracting.

I'm currently studying the classical and operatic musical styles myself. Its nice to meet a fellow artist. Anyway, I understand what you mean regarding Sarah. Her voice, since she has done Phantom, it doesn't sound as good as it used to. It sounds... we'll its hard to put it to words, really. Her real voice comes out only when she sings more rock and pop-style music, but classical and she overdoes it. Which is a shame.

  • @EmilyGloeggler7984

So regarding her more modern music, no she's not stagnant. But I agree her classical style singing has suffered within the past decade.

@donaldrose Most of Mozart's music sounds pretty similar, too

We'll I would beg differ, at least, regarding Anna Netrebko. True she does perform more opera, but the way she has been trying to sing everything in and outside of her natural range (which I would think is about the same as Sarah's), that's more foolish than Sarah's style of singing in which she, at least (most of the time), sings within her range.

requiem is about honoring death I'm not sure about that hosanna dance style...

In honoring death, we celebrate eternal life ...

    • @evelynmilne4683

The Hosanna is not about death. It is about glorifying God. Translation - ( Glory to God in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.)

I don't know about all ya'll but I sure do love all the arogant, egotistical music students in here who think they something. Get out into the field and try to build a career before you start judging someone who has performed on more stages than you'll probably ever see. and i'm not even a Sara Brightman fan.

Amazing how some "composers" have no sense of style. Britten could never have written this rubbish.

You must remember Andrew wrote this just after his father past away and this was his way to deal with his grief. In this context, I think you can understand the music better.
