    thanks for the tern tip. Now I’ll make sure I’m the only one who folds my bike lol.
    I got the Tern Eclipse X22 for a year now and it’s been awesome!

    You have a very nice way of narrating your point. I'd love to see more videos on Brompton. The other Brompton videos out there are way too scripted and kind of looses the feel of a story even if it was there. Hoping to see more on this channel. Cheers

    Thanks so much for creating this review and comparing the Tern Vs Brompton from an engineering perspective! I have been debating between these two bikes, specifically the electric brompton vs Tern Vektron (S10, Q9). I wonder if Tern still uses such delicate or plastic parts for their Vektron.. which is quite pricey already. Brompton and Tern representatives have said that their frames are very solid and the hinge is made of metal.. but you perfectly illustrated the strengths and weaknesses of each core product design. Thank you!

      another commenter said "That "plastic part" it's the safety pin of the hinge. It's an extra layer of safety for your hinge because as you said it, it's still possible to lock your bike without. So why make it of plastic? Because it's better to get that broken than your frame damaged, after that you take the to ths authorized Tern dealer to make a proper repair. Bu the way, you have to apply an unnecessary force to brake that safety pin and been a bit stubborn (or don't want to read the signal which says to unlock the hinge first)."

    So which bike rides better for your tours? Bromptons fold easiest and smallest but not by much. They also have a lot of proprietary parts compared to Tern.

  • @janpcs
    @janpcs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The plastic part only needs to keep the lock closed. For that purpose it is plenty strong. You don't have to make every part of armored steel.
    The Tern doesn't fold up as compact as the Brompton. The latter has one of the smallest folding systems in the world. But you are comparing a bike with 20 inch wheels to a 16 inch one. Of course that's not a fair comparison. A 20 inch one is bigger so the fold also is bigger. You can't pour a pint of milk in a half a pint bottle. The new Tern BYB has a more compact folding system.

      Buy a Brompton if you need a tiny, folded package. I rarely fold any of my folding bikes. I find 451 and 406 size wheels to provide a more comfortable ride.

      Excellent video, have you heard of the term sacrificial, In engineering it's common to make weaker components designed to wear out before more expensive components. I keep spare plastic latch pins with mine and my wifes Tern P10's just like I always carry a puncture repairs kit. Things do break if used incorrectly, It's better to have a plastic pin and use the system correctly than a metal pin that wears away the locking notch which is an integral part of the frame. Do you prefer to replace a plastic pin or the back half of the frame, that's why Tern supply a spare pin with each bike. Don't forget the pin didn't wear out it failed due to being misused.
