Hello, buying some today and a drip irrigation system to support. This gal is getting older and the raised beds my late hubby built have rotted. Thanks for your help.
Is there any problems with zinc (from the galvanization) leaching into vegetable plants, and into your food? Should you paint the inside of your stock tanks?
I wish I could find a stock tank with higher sides. I’ve tried one 2 foot tall. And my son make sure he mows the weeds toward it so it’ll fill up with seed weeds. We only have a cistern so we have no running water to water the plants so I take 5 gallon buckets and drain my aquariums in the house and bring out the water to use as fertilizer and watering.
im preparing a old livestock trough for planting. im placing it on flagstone the using cement brick and 2x4. will this work instead on the gravel you set yours on? i know it’s going to need support because of the weight.
Good question. I have read that you don't want to use fresh chicken manure with these containers as it will be too acidic and break down the metal. You want to use composted chicken manure instead. Other than that, I don't know.
We live in Seattle and I am anticipating that we are going to have so much water in our stock tank gardens. Is this going to be a problem and we will have soggy soil with too much water??
Make sure they’re not sitting directly on the soil and that they have ample drainage holes in the bottom. Perhaps you can contact some Master Gardeners in Seattle to learn other strategies for handling drainage issues in container gardens. Good luck!
We've used anything we have around that does not biodegrade. I've used styrofoam, cans, bottles, plastic jugs, or any combination of the above and it has worked well.
Glad you found the information useful! Good luck with your new raised beds...

I read that drilling holes will introduce rust if you don’t seal them. I am trying to decide - holes or small rocks in the bottom.

Someone told me I should line them!

Does the metal poison the soil after a while
