Im pretty sure the last emperor/king of brazil was a staunch egalitarian and advocated for the abolishment of slavery and reforming the country to a republic.
So it kinda makes sense that the demographic with recent memories of slavery would learn toward the one political entity that wanted to give them freedom.
He didn't want a republic, after slavery was abolished, the elites did a coup and created a republic that was less free and democratic than the empire.

The Brazilian Monarchy is easily one of the most progressive historically. They were only couped do to the fact there was no real heir. The republic that followed was less democratic then the monarchy. The only reason the oligarchs lost power was to the great depression and the collapse of coffee prices.
Yes, Pedro II was an awesome leader comparatively speaking. He actually cared about both industrialization and education. Too bad that his modern heirs to the Bragança family didn't follow his progressive ideals.
The heir problem was not the real issue, the real problem was that the monarchy abolished slavery and planned to curb the big planters and landowners power in the country. The republican coup was led by slave-owners in the army and by the landowner elite, when they got into power they couldn't really just reestablish slavery, so they did the best they could to not lose their power over rural workers, similar to what happened to european serfs in the middle ages.

@@benzelmer8111 Dom Pedro II never did really allow himself to be couped. he was just coopted to do so, and the military was too powerful to contest, as the populace was not really connected to the idea of the nation or monarch, there couldn't be a counter-coup.
The two most powerful unit types in Old world blues are robots or power armor. So if you run a litte OWB can you play as the Lost Bunker and go with the Cyborg powerarmor pls.
