So you want to be a Tower Crane Operator

  • Knocking out building side tie in pins. These pins connect the tie in beams coming from the Tower Crane and attach the beams to the building, holding the Crane to the side of the building allowing for the Crane to continue to get to taller heights as building construction continues. Without these tie in beams the Crane would fall over. When dismantling the Crane and removing the tie in beams by knocking out the pins, the Crane can instantly pull away from the building from the tension released from no longer being held plum to the building. The video does not do this activity justice. The Crane can violently shake and sway over 6 feet in any direction. When the Tower Crane goes over a height of approximately 300 feet, depending on the type of Crane, it needs to be attached to the building using these tie in beams, and then additional tie in beam attachment points approximately every 100 feet in height that the Crane goes up as the building is built taller. So for example on a building that is 1000 feet tall the Crane may be attached with tie in beams to the building over 10 different areas. The steps and shaking in the video will happen each time you remove these pins and tie in beams when dismantling and jacking the Tower Crane down. So repeat this video 10 times and imagine this violent shaking and swaying 1000 feet in the air.

    The way the crane moves when they do that is so different from any other movement you get during operation. I have been weathervane in 80 mph winds and it doesn't phase me. Yea, I would have loved being a crane operator, but, like all super high paying construction jobs, you have to be part of the people who are already involved in this discipline. Or be very lucky to be picked as a beginning oiler. Very few openings for an outsider. Tried when I was young to break in, no chance. Have a few friends who became operators, believe me it's better then being a construction laborer, and pay is through the roof in comparison.

      @gregm2443 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No you don't, I started working as a rigger in the oilfield, making 60k a year, within a couple years i made it to a seat. Oilfield operators make 150-200k a year.

      I was about to say...I've thought about this a lot when I was younger. Working that for a few years in your early 20s can set you up financially for the rest of your life and possibly your kids. People sleep on these sort of professions when it comes to pay and benefits. Sadly we're phasing these personnel out now through automation.
