My notification feed was flooded with reviews on this lens this morning. Gerald's review is the only one I needed to watch because I knew he would leave no stone unturned. Great job, sir!
That shot of the chunk of moss or whatever was the emotional highlight, for me anyhow. And the bit of dribbled stuff down the side -- had me on the edge of my seat.
This seems like it would make a good match for "small value zoom" to my 24-70mm f4, though the distortion's a little much on the wide end. Not a huge problem but it would be useful for me in tight quarters filming.
Very important note, ibis and active ibis performs better on native lens. Since people use ultra wide lens often with walking shots, this advantage can not be ignored.
I wish I could find comparisons to the 20 1.8. The obvious crossovers and differences are there, but the 20 (almost 19mm) was a step ahead of most new lenses on Sony.
Thank you. Finally found a mint used copy from a respected shooter/seller that was only used once so I took a risk and got it at a great price. I plan to include it in my travel kit based on the A7CR / A7CII. Already have the 24-50/2.8 G to pair it with. Love its size, weight, and features. Always enjoy and learn from your reviews. Take care.
Gerald, I checked every video you've uploaded and I don't see a proper GH5 review anywhere. I know it's an old camera now, but I would love to see you do all the same testing you do with modern cameras on the camera that helped launch your TH-cam career. 🙏
Nice review Gerald, thank you. One thing I wanted to point out was that I felt the price comparison was a bit (unintentionally) disingenuous. You can easily find used Tamrons and Sigmas for $550-600. You won't find any used copies of this Sony lens for several months and probably longer for a decent price gap between the new and used price. So when looked at that way, a used Tamron/Sigma will be about half the price + tax of a new Sony 16-25. Which is considerable since all of these lenses are targeting the more budget-conscious buyers. Anyway, just wanted to be annoying and point that out. Thanks Gerald, always appreciate you.
Is there any difference between this and the 16-35mm f/4 pz lens? Of course, 10mm loss and f/4 but anything else. I just bought the pz lens during WPPI wondering if I should return and pick this up lol
PZ 16-35 is a better lens, better range, internally focusing, lighter, and cheaper at that. There are too many sacrifices you need to make for that f/2.8.
@@ElementaryWatson-123 Right. Aside from power zoom, internal focus/zoom, more focal range, and the fact that I’m not sure that I need f2.8 on a wide angle where I’m usually trying to get most things in focus in the frame and especially on my camera (FX3) which has superior low light.
The lens landscape for Sony cameras is getting a bit more convoluted. Do you think soon they will introduce Sony FE 14-20mm or Sony FE 20-24mm? Perhaps Sony FE 70-90mm would be so much more useful for portrait photography.
Hi Gerald. Thanks for a great channel. I was wondering if you have up dated your A1 firmware yet? I have been holding back because I still don't trust it, and to be frank it doesn't offer a lot I want as a stills shooter. What are you views.
Hi, nice and informative video! Did you have the chance to get a lens profile for Lightroom yet? If not, do you use another lens's profile or correct it yourself? Thank in advance.
Not Bad for $1,100.00 , i mean i do video mostly and that looks like a great lens for doing video. I normally us the Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens, and it's a pretty good lens for $540.00 but i'm thinking for the extra money for this 16-25 i thinking i'll get sharper video and also a bit more light is pretty nice, and even at F2.8 i'm thinking this 16-25 will be sharper than my 18-105 lens.
@GeraldUndone what lens did you shoot this video? Also, how far back is the camera? This lens your reviewing interests me due to recording a podcast in a small room. Currently I have a 35mm. But I just moved and am looking for a lens that is functional in my smaller room for a talking head podcast.
I seriously love these new compact lenses from Sony. Perfect compact lens to add to my zve1 lens setup. I’ll keep my 16-35 gm2 on my FX3 and the 16-25 on the ZVE1.
right now i pair my a7c2 with 20 1.8 + 35-150, ive been eyeing tamrons wide zooms for a while now but this seems to be quite a bit more compact, with better overall lens quality, very tempting. the 3rd party wide zooms are older though and therefore much cheaper open box or used, so i dont know if its worth it
Gerald, as always a solid video, thank you. I upgraded my A1, interested why you have chosen not to. I’d have asked you at NAB but thought I’d let you get on with it. Meant warmly, it was quite the site to see you surrounded by other really good content creators, your height made you look like mother Goose as they were all huddled around you.
I was going to update, but they pulled it before I could. There's a wifi bug or something in the update and they're fixing it and then relreleasing the firmware.
@@geraldundone cheers Gerald, I’ve been lucky so far with my upgraded version. Fingers crossed and safe travels back to Canada. Me, I rode a motorbike down from Kelowna British Columbia with one stop at Boise Idaho and my rear is killing me.

I watched this video in black and white because my phones bedtime filter was on and I started the video forgetting that. Then it looked fine so I didnt turn it off.
Tamron IS more then half the price less (used). AND you can get 16-35 gm I version used for much less AND GMII is ONLY 30% more... Meaning this lens for the current price- total waste of money...
Sony keeps releasing uncompetitive lenses. Tamron/Sigma already covered those focal length, and did it well, and cheaper too. Nobody wants to make lenses that would actually shake the market, like 18-45/2.8 or 24-135/2.8.
Does anybody really need this lens? I was at the Sony booth and I asked them where is my a7s4… Nobody had a clue. Not an inkling. And they said if it has more megapixels then it won’t be as good in low light… So what the hell does that mean? I’m supposed to buy a 4 year old camera? But you think that’s bad, that’s nothing… Went to the Canon booth and all their sensors are five years old and complete old crap… Nothing new whatsoever!
16-25??? Who is this actually for? Buy a friggin prime lens with good low light performance, homie. If you can’t get a shot without 9mm of zoom, this won’t help.

What about the Sigma 16-28 F2.8?
Thank you for the review. Can you tell me how much difference in sharpness and IQ this lens is compared to the GM 16-35 2.8? Thank you!

The price at an online shop here in UK went crazy down to £819 and I'm definitely getting it!
Thanks Gerald great little look at the new lens!
No comparison to the 16-35G PZ??? From all regards, is the PZ a better piece of glass except slower? Or are there other advantages either way?
Yes, and perhaps a comparison to the 16-55mm f2.8 for APS-C too, where it overlaps half with.
I'm curious how the lens compares to cropping in to APS-C on a 16mm prime lens. I like the size but 1.5x zoom isn't much.
Came straight here to see this review after the announcement! F/2.8 aside, how do you think this compares to the 16-35mm PZ?
Great job on the video Gerald! Thanks for making it.

How does this lens compare with the Sony G 16-35 f4 (which I own) ?
Do you like this as a companion lens to the Sony 20-70 f4?
I want a wider option, but like the one stop shop of the 20-70.
Great review as always, Gerald. Looks like a nice compact wide zoom.
Of course this comes out just after i bought the sigma 16-28 LOL
The sigma is still a good lens this one is just better for more money than the Tamron or sigma alternatives
Sigma is ok
lol
Sigma wins hands down.
You can return it if you just bought it

WELCOME BACK GERALD! this is what we so rely on you for, this is why we came and stayed. Give us the info, concise, obsessive, perfect!
I am curious if next time, for example, there will be a 50-100mm.f.2.8 lens in the same size as the first two in the series?
Seems like the 85mm f/1.8 could serve that purpose well.
Looks great, though I wish it zoomed out to 15mm. That would’ve given this that extra something against some of the alternatives.
Wow. The longitudinal CA control is extremely impressive on this one!
I was initially bummed seeing this because I just bought the PZ 16-35 f4 G but then I realized this doesn't have electronic zoom so I'm good.

I don't doubt that it's a good performing lens, only why would anybody need that RANGE? Get a good 24-70, a 16mm prime, and save a lot of money.
As a landscape lens, you effectively have 16-35 with cropping. Pretty useful.
