I haven’t watched this until now. I watched this week to see you clearing around the barn and saw Bea checking for crawlies. Bea, I’m impressed with the snake skin handling. My husband won’t have even touched that. 💕

Great to see your infectious enthusiasm...good luck!!........I have done something similar in spain...a few thoughts 1...make a really good "camp" for your van...get water/showers/toilets sorted...and buiild a serious shelter for all to protect yourself from serious sun, wind and rain...dont skimp on this as its gutting to see your temporary home destroyed by nature...2 get yourselves down to the local town planning guys and get them onside with everything...its a pain but its all too easy for your neighbours to dob you in or more likely be watched by council planning guys drones!!! 3 everything will take much more time than you think..dont crucify yourselves for this 4 Buy materials from local guys...maybe more expensive but you make friends locally, get free advice and opportunity for "cash deals" (no vat!!!) 5 plan to enjoy the whole process!!!
    buen suerte

Been binge watching your vlogs while snowed in. We live on a rural gulf island in BC, Canada and have a little 630 sq ft cabin that we've been slowly fixing up for the past 10 years. Amazing how far you've come already since buying this property! Can't wait to see you all moved in and settled.

We bought land in Paphos Cyprus in 1973. We used to go there for picnics under the tree. No fences. It's was the best time of all. Even made home made showers under the tree.
We started build a house and all in all I never lived there much. When I had holidays we used to go there to clear stones and make the place beautiful only to find it totally overgrown again on the next holiday.
It meant that we could never go anywhere else. We had great times though. Having the van gives you flexibility. Keep your original idea of having a base but don't let the place consume you. It's easily to fall in love with it as we did.

Many, many congratulations, it looks absolutely amazing😊😀👍👍👍
And the roof looks new (very important!), with more modern roofing tiles!
4 decades ago, my ex husband and I totally renovated and extended an old 'barn type' building on his family's land, not as large as yours, but with with quite a few olive, citrus, fig, and nut trees, together with vines (kept low) for wine😊
The building had only been used when they harvested the olives and grapes, with a sort of very large 'tub like thing', with a drain, for squashing the grapes with your feet (yuck!), before it was then put into a very old wooden barrel to ferment.
It was dry, absolutely delicious, and rather strong 😊😁
The olives were taken to a mill, and the oil stored in a very large metal drum😊
    I digress!
We did all the work (digging foundations, mixing cement for the reinforced floors and columns, cos it had to be enclosed in a 'frame' to make it earthquake proof, ourselves, with the help of a few friends occasinally!
    Could go on for ages😂
    So excited for you😊😀
All love , and best wishes, Claire, Berlin 😘 ✌

Congratulations to you both on your fantastic purchase .don't be too surprised if there is no floor in the barn and just soil ? you could also look into lime plastering for the walls as this helps the building breath and obviously good installation boards on the ceiling

As a young kid living in Portugal and before moving to France then Canada where I now live, my parents drilled a fear of snakes into me and for good reason. Venomous snakes like the very same inviorment that you now will also enjoy. Be careful when clearing bushes etc. Be safe.

Now that’s a project. I bet you both fell like kids at Christmas. My folks have just bought an old farm house with barns and land in France to live in. They have completely renovated it themselves. The barn like yours is the next project. They are also thinking of having a mezzanine level. The biggest job you’ll have I reckon is pouring the concrete floor. Can’t wait for your updates. Good luck with the project and congratulations. All the best.

Wow. Just wow. Lovely spot and I"m so happy for you. Just one word of caution. If you want more light, it might be simpler and less dangerous to consider punching a skylight through the roof and flooding the place with light. A skylight or a dormer is easy to put in and most reputable contractors should be able to do it. Punching a window in a thick, stacked stone wall (not the supported one where you found the gecko, but a new one) is dangerous to the structure and something that most modern contractors do not have enough experience to handle. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in in case you wanted more light in the future. Keep up the great work. Love your channel.

    @stevemann6851 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi To you both. i am a bit behind the times here, so i dont know if you will get to read this.
I am a builder who lives in the south of france. having done a lot of restauration work i can see
that you have a great little building there. The floor will probably be just earth. best to put down a concrete
floor, with steel re-inforcement, you can then tile it for a practical and cool finish. If you keep some of the walls
exposed stone would look great. if you point them with natural lime and sand, dont use ciment, do any rendering of walls the same, with lime, then the walls will breathe. maybe enlarge one of the window slots for more light,
this info is probobly late and obvious, but i wish you well

An exciting but daunting project. In my very limited experience it may be more economical to build new (small 700-900 sq ft) and do the renovation on the barn as a long term project. But and alas it is your baby. I'm sure your neighbors will help out in many ways as it seems rural Portugal is being abandoned by much of its youth for the big cities on the coast where the jobs are. Lot's of hurdles ahead, permitting etc. but I'm sure it can be done.

Hi, congratulations on Your new property, looks wonderful, so much potential to be turned into a dream home and garden, don't think you need to insulate the roof it's already been done in the building process, lime plaster will help repair the walls inside and out, it's what keeps the building dry and comfortable, and allows for walls to breathe. This is going to be an amazing experience, wishing you every success, les x

Congrats you guys !! I think you've made a wise choice indeed. Back in the 1990's Lyn and me did something similar in Brittany and we made it our home (still have campervan of course) of course. To explain properly our M. O. like this would be quite difficult, but could maybe give you some useful tips by E-Mail on sympathetic renovation work etc.(remember that we are low tech). Definitely though; try to learn the lingo,it will improve your experiences no end. Also the locals will really appreciate the extra effort you make for sure. It worked a treat for us here. Keep on Trucking! Bob in Brittany.

brilliant! put some "Milton" tablets in your well it purifies the water, then you will need a filter, "berkley" water filters are good although a bit dear, but worth it. Clear the barn get a chair sit, chill and get the feel of how to arrange the barn... checkout the roof joists.. if your going to plaster the interior you must use Lime plaster as it allows the walls to breath... good luck..you've got some serious graft to sort it, but it will be worth it...well done.

With the barn, my advice is to clean the gaps between the granite rocks, and fill them with concrete, it will give it structure and isolation, also a rock varnish on the inside is not a bad idea. If you think of open a door or a window on it, keep in mind some of those old barne walls were made of 2 rock walls filled with rubble in the middle, and it can be a hard work.. i helped my dad with a conversion like that some years ago, and we had to open a door trough it, not easy. What part of Portugal u guys are? I would say somewhere in the middle? Im Portuguese, but i live in England at the mom. But have similar plans for the near future

So cool. Hope you video your process in retrofitting the barn. Seems like awesome land for creating a permaculture food forest!

A couple of velux windows in the roof would bring loads of light in.
They are easy to fit even for someone that hasn't fitted them before.
