I can see why they used the other, but the one thing I like about this is the bit about “One day you’re gonna get yourself and everyone else killed yada yada.” Because when that moment comes that he has to beg for the lives of his crew to Markus, and it fails, that realization that he DID get everyone killed, that look on his face as he apologizes to the bridge, hits home just that much more. He learned the hard way that Pike was right.

He would have died either way. Once he agreed to the mission with Marcus he was in big trouble.

@@numbaoneg101 right, but in the theatrical Kirk refused to believe this assessment from Pike in defiance; the scale of risk he then adopts in the mission hits like a truck when realizes Kirk realizes he in fact did put his crew under Markus’s boot

Well what pike said to Kirk all applies to admiral Marcus and what he did that resulted in the whole mess with Khan in the first place. Just as Kirk shouldn't have risked Spock's life, so shouldn't marcus have awoken Khan in a reckless and arrogant attempt to militarize starfleet. That is what makes the dynamic between Spock and Kirk so freaking awesome. On one hand, Kirk is the kind who tends to ignore the rules because he disagrees with them and their often arbitrary nature. While understandable, this often resulted in Kirk making rather reckless acts that put him and his crew in needless danger. On the other hand, Spock has a consistent tendency to follow rules and regulations often pass the point of sense or logic. While rules are meant to keep us from making significant mistakes, you can follow the rules to the letter and still make great mistakes as Spock has learned the hard way. It was after pike died and Kirk took the mission to kill Khan, under the false alies John Harrison, that Spock actually Spock out to Kirk against the immoral nature of their orders, which if Kirk had followed to the letter, would have resulted in their deaths and major war with the Klingon empire. It was Spock actually rebelling and appealing to Kirk's rebellious trait to stand for the best traditions and virtues of star fleet, that got Kirk to listen for once and this by choosing to listen to.his comrade, Kirk starts to grow into the captain he was meant to be.

I love the dynamic shift. Pike is his superior and acts like it when he needs to but also lets himself sit down and talk to Kirk like a son. He’s the closest thing to a father Kirk had in his life and even though this got cut, and I think the other scene was much better, it’s still nice to see that side of him.

I think this shows a more father/son dynamic to the Kirk/Pike relationship than the film did.

The version they used was much better. Kirk thought he was being busted back to cadet. Later Pike finds him in the bar and Kirk finds out how he went up to bat for him and got Markus to agree to letting him remain on the Enterprise as 1st Officer. It makes Kirk's reaction to Pike's death more meaningful.

I like that dialogue Pike has with Kirk after he sits down. Greatness vs. humility is an excellent theme to explore. That said, it made sense that they went with the final scenes. There, Pike chews out Kirk in his office and doesn't hold back, while in the bar, he acts more like a father figure. Having those two actions take place in separate places and different times made more sense than doing them both all at once in one place. It just would've seemed too rushed somehow. My opinion...

i definitely like the theatrical version better. The close up shows Chris pines' facial expression completely change from cocky and arrogant to remorseful when he learns he lost his ship. It hits home alot harder for me at least.

I LIKE THE CONVERSATION IN THE BAR VERSION BETTER. KIRK FINDS OUT HOW PIKE WENT TO BAT FOR HIM, MORE FATER SON TYPE RELATIONSHIP, YOU CAN ALSO SEE KIRK ALMOST WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES AT THE END OF THAT SCENE.

This is a nice scene, but I liked the movie one better. It truly hits home that Pike cares about Kirk. And Kirk too thinks he's busted to cadet for a while, so he's grateful for Pike giving him a chance again as first officer

I'm glad they reshot it for the theatrical cut. It gave Kirk time to ruminate Pike's words, Pike cock-blocking him from a potential date, them reminiscing their first meeting, and lastly, Pike's words of "It's gonna be okay son" which made Kirk almost cry. Perfect final heart to heart talk before his death.

I understand what the original ending of that had more meaning, with Kirk learning that Pike had gone to Bat for him to essentially give Kirk another chance.I kind of like this scene a lot better,I never got the idea why Marcus made a decision over command of the Enterprise ,that Pike would have been more than capable of making from the get go.But the original scenario made sense from a storytelling point.

One of those scenes I can see why it was deleted. Everything said here is said in the final cut anyway, the final cut is actually longer across 2 scenes

And with a subtle but important difference: here Pike takes all the decisions, on the final ones it’s Marcus demoting Kirk and giving Pole the enterprise and Pike vouching for Kirk and asking for him as first officer.

This version is better. One of the issues in the JJVerse is that rank is completely given at random and that Starfleet operates like a military organization. This is more like “you’ve got talent and you’re not ready, we realize the mistake of handing a 25 year old the keys after one mission.”

I think this is a better ending to Pike's Office scene! This is how I should be in a situation like this.. but the final ending for this scene is how I act in a situation like this! I know I experienced it a lot of times! I rather be like this moment and calm and excepting of the mistake I made and work to better my self!

The Problem is if the would used it hundreds would have said: Pike cannot decide that on his own. Anyway it would made the bar Scene unnecessaryand they could Keep other better Scene in it.

You NEVER assign a man to a lesser post on a ship on which he has been captain. Furthermore, you never make a man the captain of a major vessel right out of the Academy! The whole plot reeked of the erroneous concepts of a writer who knew nothing of naval traditions... or the reason WHY those traditions exist.

    • @katheli89
      @katheli89 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

right, the whole time I was...how fucking awkward would it be to NOT be captain on your own ship?? they should have reassigned Kirk in that case. But then again, he didn't need to be demoted for this incident either. Maybe supervised or sth but I guess this was more dramatic

This scene makes so much more sense... I don't think officers can get busted back down to cadet like in the movie
