    If you plan to use the lanyard hole, you have to allow for the tape body distance plus the 4” you have on the tape. So your 4” radius example really turns out to be approximately 7” radius as usually the tape body is plus or minus 3” so you really have a 14” diameter circle. I like the second example as it truly a 4” radius, 8” diameter hole. Thanks for the tip.

      So exactly the same as what I said in my comment stated earlier, although much wordier. I guess mine came across as condescending or a criticism of the video so I didn’t get the pin or even a like. But I was really just trying to point out the same thing in a concise way. Nevertheless, it is a good tip but needed clarification.

    I have used a variant of this trick using a can of marking paint, a forming pin and string line. Similar principle. Makes cutting radius’s easy and uniform. Never thought to apply it to a tape measure. Loving the tool tip Tuesday!!

  • @trampisporter5477

    The first circle made with the lufkin was a 14 5/8 inch. The first circle made with the Milwaukee was a 8 1/2 inch and all of the the measurements stated in the video were diameter not circumference. But it was still a good tip to share the process!

    • @dwasifarkaralahishipoor2223
      @dwasifarkaralahishipoor2223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually the measurement he thinks he's doing (and kind of is doing, on the second one) is a RADIUS. Not a circumference as he says, but not a diameter as you're saying either.

    • @dlwaterloo2221
      @dlwaterloo2221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How many times have you said to yourself “I’m going to cut a 21” circumference hole”?

    • @ToddSwagerty
      @ToddSwagerty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So measure from your hole circle and make a mark at you circumference. Then align your pencil to your mark (not rocket science folks, figure it out). If you want ta git all persnickety, he didn't take his pencil radius into account neither; so what!

    • @dlwaterloo2221
      @dlwaterloo2221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToddSwagerty “Make a mark at your circumference?” You measure from the centre of the hole, and make a mark at the radius of the circle you want to scribe. Like I said, if you want to cut a 12” hole, you know to measure out 6”. Knowing that the circumference will be 37.699” is meaningless. Technically a circumference doesn’t exist until you scribe a circle or any other closed geometric shape. People are overthinking this. The purpose of the video was to demonstrate how to draw a circle, using a tape measure instead of a compass or the old pencil and string method.

    • @dwasifarkaralahishipoor2223
      @dwasifarkaralahishipoor2223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ToddSwagerty You're missing the entire point. The circumference is the distance around the outside of the circle. He (and you, as far as I can figure out) thinks "circumference" means the distance from the center to the edge. It's not. That's the radius. The distance across the circle is the diameter.
      Typically in construction, a hole size is given in diameter. So a 6" hole is 6" in diameter, has a 3" radius, and a circumference of nearly 18-7/8".

  • @michaelpierce2818
    @michaelpierce2818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good tip. I've been building and remodeling since '70. I usually use a compass but when it's not handy, I use a chalk box with a nail in the end hook. The string can be pulled out and wrapped around my pencil at the desired radius.

    Great video, and awesome tip. I work making custom area rugs and have to draw circles all the time. I've made a tool for doing so, as I'm usually doing 6 ft diameter and above. This, though, would be handy in a pinch and I'd honestly never thought of it. Only thing is, and it may have been mentioned already, but wouldn't that lufkin demonstration result in about a 14" circle? (4" for the measured tape + 3")×2?

    Around 1970, my father taught me to use a nearly identical method to draw circles, but he hooked the hook on the tape, on the screw or small nail, and the pencil went in the crotch where the actual measurement is showing, against the body of the reel. That way, you don't have to add the extra length of the body.

    I've been using a tape measure for years but never tried that little trick. Neat trick by the way. One trick I "do" know about though is that if you don't have a pencil to draw a line and you need to make a line on something you are planning to cut then pull out your tape measure to the required length, lock it down, and put the body of the tape measure on the edge of the item you want to cut. With the tape end then take it and make a scratch mark on item you are getting ready to cut. It will make a straight line every time.
