Cannot wait until I'm healthy enough to get back to bushcraft survival. Use to love getting dropped off & then camping & walking to next pickup point between 2/4 days later.. Saving up now for a survival kit, take about 18 months, but I'll get there.

Funny how we align on most of this stuff. ;-) Being from Canada, when I head to the bush, there's nothing but trees, tree, and more trees, with the occasionally deer, bear, raccoon and skunk for company . No buildings, fences, roads (unless you count lumber roads and skidder trails. First items you need is what is close to your skin. We agree on that. Sturdy clothing, worn in layers is the way to go. The next two items, is a map and compass. If you don't know how to use them, learn how to or stay home. You need to be able to carry, or fabricate, a shelter, cordage to erect that shelter, gather firewood (to boil water and cook), a container to boil that water and cook your food in, something to stir that and eat that food, a method to start that fire (as cheap bic lighter works well enough), a flashlight to see when the darkness falls, a knife, saw and hatchet to cut and shape wood, and a small med kit to patch yourself up after you cut your self with aforementioned knife, saw and axe. BTW, where I am, in 50 years of being out there, I can count the number of times I've whittled a feather stick, went hunting for fatwood, stripped a cattail, or bothered with collecting twigs. With all the birch trees where I am, getting tinder for a fire has never been an issue. And that leads to my final point. Know the bush you are venturing into BEFORE, you pack your bag. You'll be surprised at how mush weight you can shed in you know you won't need some stuff because mother nature will provide it for you.

I just like being out in nature, learning a few skills and having the kit for the job makes it easier and more enjoyable, im not sure labels like bushcraft are helpful and buying expensive kit because someone else on yt has it is definitely not. I had the same folding saw as you for years, it was fine until i cut up lots of oak then the blade warped. It was time for me to move on to a Bahco but it doesn't mean that saw isn't right for you.

Knowledge is key, nowadays most people are all about kit, kit and more kit, and the more gucci and expensive the kit the better ! Its like a fashion show mentality, knowledge is key and it can be obtained by anybody for not a lot of dosh. Good video Leigh and all the best to you and yours.

Great video. For safety, though, you should wear your gloves when pouring the hot water into your cup. If you should miss while pouring, you will scald your hand holding the cup.

I was living in a vw camper with no engine or wheels😂. I learnt the dark arts by trial and error. It was 1988. I was 19 and I wanted to live like a hippy 😂. Although it was hard at 1st. I managed 3 years. Obviously I had work and made a few quid. The best thing you can have is knowledge and willingness to learn more

You don’t actually need anything to start to learn bushcraft, my first bits of equipment I got was a small pocket guide on food for free , a small pocket knife, and an old canvas bag, today’ modern bushcraft/ survival guys unfortunately fall into a world at the click of a button you can obtain any equipment to make live easy , I often say to people thinking of booking a bushcraft course , if it does not contain any tips and tricks forging / basic plant 🌱 mushroom 🍄 and tree identification 🆔 don’t waste your money, there is nothing you can be shown , that you can’t actually learn for yourself, there are hundreds of videos and how to guild. Once again buddy fantastic video and a difficult topic, as everyone will always have a different opinion.

The only problem with this and a lot of bushcraft stuff is that’s illegal unless you own the land. Obviously you’re unlikely to get caught but if you are uprooting plants for forage etc can get you in trouble. If you go out into the countryside to practice make sure you’re careful
