  • Pumped storage hydropower is a type of hydroelectric energy system that can store and generate electricity by moving water between two reservoirs at different elevations. This form of hydropower helps to create a clean, flexible, and reliable energy grid. It also provides energy storage and other grid services that can help to integrate additional renewable resources, such as wind and solar, with the power system.
This event is intended to be the first of several webinars exploring pumped storage hydropower. In this first 101-style webinar, presenters from Department of Energy National Labs provide a broad overview of pumped storage hydropower. They cover the types of pumped storage systems that exist, how they benefit the grid and what services they can provide, key considerations for new projects, current trends in development, general challenges, risks, and opportunities.
