lmao literally almost every game developer inherently loves being a game developer, or they'd get a job outside the games industry that's far better paying, with far better hours, an actual chance at unionization, little to none of the literally soul-crushing crunch and burnout that's inherent to game development timelines (when investors are involved), and doesn't require that they move to some of the by definition most expensive housing/rental markets that have ever existed in the history of the human species (given game development studios are located very "centrally" in large metropolitan areas capable of supporting the intensive labour requirements of game development), where the projects they're working on aren't 4-8 year projects wrapped in multiple redundant layers of NDA's that will almost certainly result in most of the work they do for most of the projects they work on being shitcanned and NDA'ed into oblivion long, long before you're even legally allowed to discuss your job with anybody that knows how social media works. Being a game developer is something you only do for a non-trivial length of time if you unironically *love, with your whole entire chest, what you're doing.* Or you go get more money with an easier job in literally any other tech related industry that isn't gaming where your resume as a game dev is also inherently much more impressive to the average non-tech worker who will be responsible for hiring you to begin with. This sentiment is frankly as silly and infantile and indicative of having no idea how absolutely incredibly difficult being a game dev (and game dev itself) is as whinging about CIG being "slow" or "poorly managed." They just bely that you literally do not know what you are talking about to begin with and should probably just not be talking on it.

I'm so glad this man gets to have this job and this life. Also, as a professional composer and sound designer, it's extremely rare to hear about developers who genuinely enjoy working at their company, the only time I EVER have is a few friends at Larian. Yet there's so many devs at CIG who clearly genuinely love the project and their jobs and left many entirely different careers to be there, it's titanically valuable in this industry, it HAS to be because of the lack of publishers and strict financial overhead from investors, the publishers are typically the reason a game can be made at all, but also the reason we sleep under the desk for months and can't ship it solid and completed. Going past that and directly to the players during development, and being able to extend that development for tech innovation is just... unthinkably good, never thought it would happen.
I have MAD respect for the concept artists at CIG. EVERY ship/vehicle we fall in love with & buy in the pledge store is because of their work. They don't get enough love, so I'm very happy they were finally showcased in ISC.
Thank you for featuring Gavin. Please add flak to the game so his designs are actually able to live up to their vision. Seeing the Hammerhead concept in particular highlights the criticality of this need: the HH is *explicitly* stated as able to provide “unparalleled anti-fighter firepower” and act as “a flak screen for carrier groups.” Similarly, the Bengal is explicitly stated as carrying Size 7 flak cannons-it is a canonical weapon you have shown animations for in multiple trailers and movies, and one Chris himself stated as planned early on. Right now, and at really almost all points in the game’s history, the HH and all multicrew ships have been unable to defend themselves from fighters-often unable to defeat even a single fighter. This is entirely because flak isn’t in the game. You keep telling us you want the cinematic, WW2 in space “we all grew up watching.” Please add WW2’s single most common anti-fighter weapon: flak. Few things are more cinematic that large ships pumping out flak screens as fighters dance on the edge of destruction-which is probably why you have used it in your own media! It should even be just as it was in WW2: proximity fuse aoe, but low impact compared to normal shells. In SC, this translates to a weapon that’s great at splashing damage onto fighters via near misses, but has the lowest alpha and dps of any weapon in its size class. Ballistic flak should do slightly more damage on a slightly larger aoe than energy flak. This prevents flak from becoming the new default-as it would be awful for using against a 890J, but also gives us a sandbox where a fully crewed 890J isn’t literally a free kill for a mantis and gladius pair. Crewed Turrets even already have exclusive access to auto gimbal as an option. This makes balancing their accuracy pretty easy to do-literally values in a spreadsheet. I suggest that an auto gimbal flak cannon should have roughly 5% accuracy vs a maneuvering Razor that’s at the edge of size 4 laser cannon range (so it would better odds vs something like a Gladius, but worse vs a Merlin, though neither a Merlin nor Razor will have much threat with their smaller and fewer weapons from that far). This should climb to about 90% accuracy at 40% of the S4 Laser Cannon range, and fall off again to about 2% at point blank. This creates a screen effect on fighters-but allows them to dance on the edge, or attempt to get under the enemy guns by crossing that screen (where they are then trapped, and thus extremely vulnerable to any escort). It would make almost every ship in the game instantly pvp survivable of not viable. Players wanting to focus on PvE could meaningfully attempt to defend themselves from small ambushes, and players seeking PvP would finally have uses for ships bigger than the Hornet. A crewed caterpillar could actually defend itself from 1-2 gank fighters, but still wouldn’t be a powerhouse, and those two fighters, if they’re good, could still win. A crewed RAFT would actually have a chance-not a fantastic one, but no longer zero-to survive the run out of atmosphere when attacked by a lone fighter. What’s more cinematic than a cargo ship desperately fending off a pirate as it struggles to escape to deep space??? A gladius should be able to dance at the edge of its cannon range and apply dps to a hammerhead. But that Hammerhead should be able to choose to equip itself-or be escorted by a friend-with a weapon dedicated to hitting fighters. This makes it about skill and preparation: the flak gunner & flak boat pilot vs the knife edge skill of the fighter pilot(s). Please. This is not some new ship request. It’s not a major art or system Request. You already have art for flak explosions, you already have the system for cannons that fire explosives-they were in prior patches but designed as anti-ship weapons, and you already have proximity hit detection thanks to the many missiles that use proximity instead of contact! You could even call them variants of existing cannons-so no new art there-literally the same velocity, lifetime, heat, ammo count, range, etc. Just add some “-F” (flak) or “-AF” (anti-fighter) or what ever the narrative team wants as a designation to the end of the current cannon names. (Deadbolt V - AF, etc). I think it should be restricted to crewed turrets long run, but maybe that’s not a system you have. It would be better to have pilot and turret gunner controlled flak on the 890J than to have none at all. Sincerely, a backer who exclusively owns (several) fighters. I want everyone’s ships to be viable. I want to have player encounters that are more cinematic and more interesting. I want that before you’re backed into a corner of neutering fighters entirely.
Pretty sure there's a small team that's been working on new ammo types since last year, including flak. Best guess is it would arrive with the Perseus next year, since being able to use a variety of ammo types is one of the Perseus's strengths, IIRC.

I'm getting older here. I'm now 52 and really wonder when a stable, not laggy, optimized game will be released. I've built the highest end PC one can build every 4 years. And I still get under 70 FPS. I bought in day one, been a subscriber, own so much SC stuff. I pray I can play this game like it should be played before I die, any clue when?
Gavin, all my respect for your work and tremendous contributions at bringing to us your vision of the future. For what I've seen, you are undoubtedly one of the most talented artist of this century according to me and my love for Sci-Fi and spaceships. Thank you so much! And keep it up please!
04:55 Metrics are the thing that makes open city modding so much fun .... everything has to fit so everything has to be to the correct scale and allow sufficient space for NPC pathing, to actually work where it's supposed to work. So you look at the volumes you need for the objects and spaces which go inside then build around that. It's so much more interesting than just slapping together an instanced interior which is separate and on a completely different scale from the exterior. ...and, to be sure, a LOT of players notice these interior-exterior scale conflicts which is why the open city style of modding (e.g. Oblivion, Fallout NV, Skyrim, Fallout IV, etc.) became so popular.
Super interesting video! Spaceship lust.... I am floored by his depth and breadth of starship design. 🤯 HH, Raft, Kraken, Cutter, Raven, Eclipse, F8C, Valkyrie, Ares, Gladius, ... . Goosebumps from the last scene with the HH jumping out. ♥
A lot of favorites in there. I am a big fan of the Gladius and got the Pirate edition for my collection too. Argo has a special place in my heart too for its character and style with that beautiful shade of orange. Cheers Gavin, the ships are awesome.

Glad to meet the guy who designed my favorite the gladius and know it’s his favorite too! But I have to ask, why did you guys not give it folding wings?? It’s a “navy” plane after all! And the utility and space utilization would be amazing!
I knew he had a hand in many of the ships concept art but wow! He really has touched most of our ships or influenced them in some way or another. Really liked this episode.

I love Argo ship designs and hope we see more in the game. I was surprised that the Vulture was Drake instead of Argo, but maybe we will see an Argo variant as well. I'm also hoping to see more Argo mining ships to compete with the Prospector, maybe something midway between a Prospector and a Mole, but still able to operated solo or with a crewmate. Maybe a refining ship? Argo should have a ship for each industrial role so players can have a cohesive fleet of ships.
2:55 At least there's one good thing about deadlines at CIG, it's more of a "whenever you've got chance" instead of a "on my desk by next week" kinda system. Must be great.
I've been going through this frame by frame for entirely too long, here's what I've come up with so far as a possibility... He starts with an inhale signified by the raising of his shoulders, but before he closes his mouth the start to drop, indicating a potential vowel. Then what appears to be a plosive followed by a diphthong. I think he's saying Aopoa for the first part. Given that most ships are referenced by manufacturer name first, Aopoa seems to fit best with the assumption he started vocalizing before his first mouth closure. Then it looks like he has two more syllables to say before coming to a rest. I also ran the "roar" sound through a spectrogram to see if there was a hidden message in the audio, but couldn't find one. I may be way off base, but figured I would share my best guess to start, see if others had any ideas.

And I still get under 70 FPS. I bought in day one, been a subscriber, own so much SC stuff. I pray I can play this game like it should be played before I die, any clue when?

i was excited to see actual concept drawings and unreleased designs, but not just pictures from website..
HH, Raft, Kraken, Cutter, Raven, Eclipse, F8C, Valkyrie, Ares, Gladius, ... .
Goosebumps from the last scene with the HH jumping out.
♥
Please do not forget to add cars flying in the sky and also strange creatures on other planets, as well as the city and other worlds. Thank you.
Gavin, thank you for your work. It is enjoyed everyday.
Say about Star Citizen whatever you want, but they do make some of the coolest Wallpapers out there!
You just gotta love Gavin’s passion and enthusiasm
Gavin's creativity has clearly been a boon to our space game. Thanks Gavin and CIG!
A lot of favorites in there. I am a big fan of the Gladius and got the Pirate edition for my collection too. Argo has a special place in my heart too for its character and style with that beautiful shade of orange. Cheers Gavin, the ships are awesome.
Loved this. I hope you guys make more "behind the scenes" videos.
I love that window behind Gavin!
*Great video! :D*
_Are CIG planning to update designs that are already outdated and that feel inferior to newly made ships?_
_For example, the Starfarer and the Gladiator?_ °
A true artist! His stills are art. The HammerHead and Kraken ones are my favorites.
it's always nice to see person who is passionate about his job
Love the Gavin Rothery episodes, what a legend
Man i could hear him talk about his projects for an entire hour, really well put together presentation guys, and these ships look fantastic, that concept to final product presentation in the beginning got me a few times, specially the Terrapin. Great job all.
A very gentle sympatic person. 😊
Thank you for designing my kraken. Now I just hope I get to fly it before I die. I'm not freshly beaked.....
Love your ships! A large part of what makes Star Citizen so cool is the awesome ships, and yours are the best!
Gavin is the man. So many great designs, not to mention his work on Moon
Gavin's '80s sci-fi art aesthetic is--MWA! 😘
4.0 has been coming for 5 years now
Thx Gavin/Jared
Very interesting episode ❤
He really feels it
Incredible work. Thanks for sharing!
From my own experience in the games business. If you enjoy your job, you simply do it better. That is some important part.
whoa the Zeus MK2 ES looks incredible! so glad i got one!
Argo has some of the best design flavor - love this guy's work.
Guy had a dream job luky him and he´s doing great stuff to 4 the community of the game. Thx 4 all off this.
Amazing interview! Maybe you will make a series with designers. Would be nice to watch😊
As much as I’m mad at this game is taking so freaking long you gotta admire the talent behind it
Glad to meet the guy who designed my favorite the gladius and know it’s his favorite too! But I have to ask, why did you guys not give it folding wings?? It’s a “navy” plane after all! And the utility and space utilization would be amazing!
Love to see people thriving and doing what they love. That's where your best work happens
For the raft how about:
One big cargo plane/plate/deck
2 rows of 5 for 320 scu
A practical mid spot
Everytime Jared mentions Pyro i die a little inside.
This guy is awesome. big fan of his work and attitude
You are all doing a awesome job but please do more Ship commercials again, i just love them so much!
Wow some of the most iconic ships, my respects SIR!!!
Love Star Citizen and happy to support the development
So.. when is it releasing?
What an awesome episode! Thanks!!
You have some amazing people working there. I can't wait to see what's coming in the future!
I knew he had a hand in many of the ships concept art but wow! He really has touched most of our ships or influenced them in some way or another. Really liked this episode.
I love all of his work, he is amazing. Really enjoyed this highlight.
Gavin has been obsessing over me for years... Ever since I found out he was the concept artist for Kraken and my favorite ship brand: Crusader. Mainly the Ares duo. Thanks Gavin and don't stop please !!!!!
Nothing like passion for what you do. :D SPACESHIP!!
How about not delaying 4.0 like literally every other patch thanks.
I love concept art as well. Considering that is most of what Star Citizen still is.
Didn't get time for the remade Mustang. Got mine expecting to melt it, but the new lines made me keep it. Now the latest 3.24 has brought back its prime flight performance.
inside star citizen is amazing and at it's core will always be jared
>Puts Perseus in thumbnail
>Somehow brings back the ''hey look at this cool guy for a while episode'' format
>Shows only existinc concept art and existing in game assets
>Refuses to even show a small teaser of anything new
Im reaching my breaking point guys
They showed us briefly the Zeus Mk2 in-game, it looks amazing
You weren't looking hard enough.
They teased a Raft variant in the concepts a lot; it could be a sign of things to come?
Much respect and love to Star Citizen
Somehow this man has designed all the ships I adore. Perseus, Galaxy, Ironclad and Cutter my beloved
Great job, he's designed some of my favorites.
This is so sick! I wanna see more small to medium ships from RSI!
The man has an eye for a space ship that's for sure!
What a legend. Gavin is my role model.
Seriously incredible work, and such a cool conversation!
