  • The MBA is worth it for the right people, no question about it. But who is the MBA for and are you one of them?
    This week Angela Guido outlines three kinds of people and why they should get an MBA: some of whom should be starting their applications by the end of this video. The MBA is CRAZY useful for your career if you’re the right person for business school: it can lead you to more opportunity, more success and a better chance of doing good in this world.
    We have helped hundreds of people get into business school, and so many have gone on to great things post-MBA, but it isn’t for everyone. You really need to know who should get an MBA.
    You also need to know who shouldn’t: so come back next week, when we’ll talk about that.

    I work in education and seriously just want to do something completely different that would allow me to be in a different income bracket. I’m just not sure what kinds of jobs that I would be good at post MBA.

    Loved the video! Question: would a part-time MBA provide the same opportunity for career switchers as a full-time MBA?

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is something to research extensively at target schools. At some schools the answer is definitely no (though look beyond their marketing materials and try to talk to career services to get the real answer - the surface answer will not be no). But in the case of some schools, Booth, most notably, the answer is yet. At Booth, PT students get to participate in recruiting at the end of the program in the same way second year FT students do and in fact, interviewers don't necessarily even know who is PT and who is FT. This is not an ad for Booth. Other schools will also have opportunities, but this is what you need to investigate.

    What if I’ve worked in social work the last 3 years and I want to take a business approach to helping people/doing a social impact MBA? I want to work in higher up management and leadership positions but I’m often told I need a masters and I think having an MBA could get me there faster as I want to get very high up into the company eventually. Can you please give your advice?

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alannah! Have you seen our video on this topic? [ th-cam.com/video/4TI-thgGkAs/w-d-xo.html ]
      Does it answer your question? :)

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely! See the video below, but also be sure to research programs effectively and submit an amazing application. When we work with people like you, they tent to get a lot of MBA scholarships. which is really helpful in offsetting the cost given that you will typically expect to earn less over the course of your career in the social impact space. Do reach out to speak with us if you'd like to consider working together! - Angela

    Is an MBA still considered worthy by employers if you take the alternative pathway with no undergraduate degree?

  • @jessicalawrence3074

    So Angela I'm certain this is a silly question, because I'm not very far into my MBA research and know almost nothing so far, but... I keep seeing things about a "Marketing MBA" "Nonprofit Management MBA" etc. If I know I want to go into marketing, does that mean I need that specialized MBA? I was looking at Quantic because of the affordability, and it has "specializations" but none of those are things I'm interested in. I guess I'm just a bit lost about the different program options at different schools. (Also, if you have any opinions about Quantic I'd love to hear them)

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jessica, sorry for the slow reply! You absolutely don't need a specific "Marketing MBA" - what I'd recommend instead for anyone with a fixed idea of where they want to go after business school is to check out our career report here: careerprotocol.com/best-mba-program-for-your-career/
      This breaks down what jobs MBA graduates get from each of the top US schools, which should allow you to find the ones that target/ are targetted by marketing firms/ departments.
      No big thoughts on Quantic! We've spoken about Online MBAs a bit on this channel ( th-cam.com/video/_ENmavsCguM/w-d-xo.html ) and would caution that they often lack the networking, peer-learning and career opportunities of offline equivalents!

    Have you ever worked with folks in the Risk Management Vertical in Banking/Insurance who are considering an MBA (such as myself)? What are your thoughts on MBA's with these people?

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah!! We've worked with just about every kind of candidate under the sun. Main thing is just to be really good at your job whatever it is and then to lay out a vision for your future that both requires and MBA AND leverages what you've learned so far, no matter how big a pivot you intend to make. RM folks tend to be great analysts, detail oriented and at the same time big picture thinkers. You should be able to leverage all of that!

    What if you have all the 3 reasons to make an MBA? And can you also comment on MBA post 30? And what can go wrong if you do an MBA post 30. ?

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sonal! Those answers are mutually exclusive. 🤣At least 1 and 2 are. So you can't have all 3. MBAs post 30 are great if they help you get more of what you want in your career. You might be looking into part time or executive programs at that stage, though, depending on your work experience. Please check out these other relevant videos to your question:
      th-cam.com/video/MKnq5BUh-H8/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/_ENmavsCguM/w-d-xo.html
      As for what can go wrong? I have 3 ways I want to answer this question.
      1. The first is that the likely bad scenario is obvious: you borrow money for an expensive degree that doesn't really help you get more of what you want in your career and you end up regretting the decision. Watch next week's video to avoid that scenario.
      2. The second is to say that all choices in life entail risk. To take good risks, make sure you are comfortable with the downside risk. Are you OK investing a bunch of money in your education and your future even if it doesn't pan out? If not, then consider how you could get comfortable with that risk before applying to business school or consider other risks that you are comfortable with.
      3. The third way I wanna respond is to say that you shouldn't even be asking this question in the first place because it's based in fear. If you follow the thread of any fear back to its source, you will find that at bottom, it is all just fear of death. But let me resolve that for you right now. We're all going to die, MBAs and non-MBAs alike. It's extremely unlikely that an MBA will have any impact on the timing or character of that inevitable end. That said, since the worst case scenario is inevitable anyway, instead of wasting energy worrying about it, wouldn't you rather just make the journey to that destination as awesome and fun and meaningful as possible? And on YOUR terms. It's your one precious life, after all.
      So I wouldn't spend a lot of time dwelling on what can go wrong. Be sensible, planful, and frugal. But don't doomsday yourself into inaction or out of something you want. A better question than "what can go wrong" is "What would my life look like if it goes right by MY OWN standards?" Or in other words: "What do I really want in my life and in my career?" Imagine that and then go after what you want with no fear. And if an MBA is a part of that, then go for it, again, with no fear. We're rooting for you to have an awesome, joyful career. It's what you deserve.

    What about pivoting from marketing to finance?

    • @CareerProtocol
      @CareerProtocol  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a fairly common reason to go to business school, especially if you're switching industry AND function, but the modules you take/ clubs you join/ network you build at business school also has to support it.

    It's a waste of money and I'd rather spend that time at a job and learn a heck lot more

      YES!!! This is indeed the correct answer for 99.9% of the population. Hope you're crushin' it!
