    Amazed! I have learned so many tips, tricks, and techniques from you it is a bit unfair to guys that didn’t have access to TH-cam and a rock star tier and teacher when they started tying. You have continually helped me improve my skills in less time than I ever expected. Matter a fact, when you sent me a message the other day after the cdc video I was sitting at my desk tying size 24 and 26 BWO’s based on the cdc pattern you posted two days prior. I never thought I would be able to tie much past an 18 that even remotely would be fishable, however with all that I have learned from your instructions size 26 is now my stopping point, and not because I can’t tie them, but rather because I can’t see them on the water. Best advice you have given thus far in my opinion though is the use of wax when tying to assist with thread control, game changing for me. Thank you so much for what you do!

    An awesome tutorial Davie. It's great to see a solution that makes twisted gut so classic salmon flies can continue to be tied. Many thanks for sharing.

    I've never used gut before because it is hard to find and expensive. This looks like it is made in a similar manner to furled leaders and horse hair lines, so I can now try something new! Thank you! Many cats are thankful as well!

    Hello Davie,
    A brilliant idea! I've used a simplified method when I've tied classic flies for fishing, but without a sandpaper and a wax. I will try your complete method for a display flies, instead of searching rare and expensive genuine gut. Thank you very much!

    Great technique! You can easily make a jig to do this, I use one to make furled leaders. Thanks for sharing and would love to see more classic salmon fly videos in the future.

    Restorers of antique clocks are able to buy lengths of pre-twisted gut. It's very strong, because it carries extremely heavy clock weights for many years. I suspect that would be entirely strong enough without multiple thicknesses.

    Brilliant video as usual! I have never used gut - just came across this video of yours accidentally. I am just thinking if you can use the normal braided lines instead. These days they are superstrong and thin. Or maybe using Dacron backing lines ? basically the gut is also a braided line. In addition, the braided lines are coming in different colors that you can match your fly with. Any difference?

    Hi Davie would I need to use cobblers wax or would any fly tying wax do the same thing? Many thanks again Michael 👍

      Hi Michael,
      Either would be fine as I use both the cobblers wax for the darker colour and the fly tyers wax for the light natural colour..

    Great video make. I’ve bought some silk gut in a coil. It’s around 20 or 30 yards. I was just wondering if you could do the same with it as you did in the video. Thank you again for sharing with us all. Best Regards, Ken😊😊🍺

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken,
      You will probably have to soak the gut first to make it soft and pliable to make your twisted gut but other than that you can twist the gut the same way that I did with the nylon..I'm glad you liked the video...
      All the very best Davie..

    • @callumclark3358
      @callumclark3358 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken, I'm intrigued. As I understood it the length of strand which could be drawn from one silkworm depended on the thickness. Thick gut of 1x or 2x I would guess could only be drawn a couple of feet or so. Maybe the gut you have is manufactured somehow from silk fibre? Be interesting to know.

    That was pretty cool Davie! Can that be used for fishing or just for display? I've read some tying articles on using braided leader for for the "eye" on those hooks. I think in the Daiichi catalog they recommend braided dacron for tying on the blind eye. But that waxed mono looks awesome. Too bad shoemakers or cobblers aren't around like they once were. I wasn't tying flies when the shoe repair shop was just down the street, I'm sure Richard, the owner, would've given me some wax. Thanks Davie for all your tips and techniques!

    Hi Davie,
    I like your videos, flytying as well as the tips and tricks. If you still want to use natural gut for your fantastic salmon flies, I work together with a string maker. Nylon is of cause more durable, just an idea.

      Hi Martin,
      If I could find gut as fine as the nylon I use in the video or even finer for smaller flies then I would certainly use it, I have looked at string but never tried it..Do they do strings as fine as this.?Thanks for asking..

    Intriguing to say the least. I suppose this is for flies for display purposes only, as the sandpapering and heat would preclude actually fishing flies with a 'gut' loop.Still amazing!

      I have very few feathers and the ones I have used on the flies you may have seen came from the people that wanted the flies tyed as I have really stopped looking due to how hard it can be to find them...Looking for old victorian taxidermy birds can be the best way though...

      Еще бы! Натуральный гут фиг достанешь, и стоит, как самолет. Для рыбалки я крутил петли из лески, потому что гут режется леской на ура, даже без нагрузки. Но Дэви совершенно прав, что со временем такие петли, сделанные без наждачки и воска со временем раскручиваются. Для рыбалки это не имеет значения, а если муха вяжется в рамку - то имеет, и еще какое.

    Really enjoyed it, Davie... thank you! I've no need for "gut eyes" but just knowing a person can make them (modern reproductions) is a kick.
    For curiosities sake, but only if you can make the time, would you say how you taper the ends so there isn't a step where the body/tail starts? I've thought of a couple of possibilities but figure you've got a good solution already.
    And I ran into this a while ago... www.eclecticangler.com/personal-furling-machine-v4/... It took awhile digging through my brain space to remember what the context was and make the connection. I was intending to make 3-legged furled leaders (made from UNI 8/0 or 6/0... so they are quiet and don't throw water like furled nylon leaders do). Haven't gotten to it, but maybe this video will get me going again.
    Mike
