I felt the exact same way when I saw this ending. However I may have found a may better way to explain this and that is with the first two acts. The game begins with the protagonist as a child, he finds his neighbor has something in the basement and goes to seek it out. But he finds out that it's a underground prison for children that the neighbor kidnaps. Protagonist escapes his prison and grows up with the emotional trauma of being kidnapped and being held there. So the first two acts actually happened to this charactsr. However, the third act only explains his trauma he had when he was young. I believe the shadow man is our character but its the emotional stress he had. Once you save your younger self, you are released from your stress and the shadow man disappears. In the end it was just a dream and he looks forward to a new day. The neighbor no longer is around and our protagonist can live in peace now with no problems

Well, I think you play as the main characters child self. I believe he has some kind of trauma that he went through as a kid. He was kidnapped and molested by the creepy neighbour that lives next to him because he saw stuff he wasn't supposed to in the neighbours basement. He relives the trauma and can't get over the fear of being a victim who was sexually abused and shut away from the childhood he was meant to have. You know how towards the ending you had to crouch down and cover the little boy from that big monster.. Well, I think the little boy represents the innocence he had as a child and is trying to keep his innocence. And the more you protect your innocence the more you grow bigger, it's like the more you grow bigger the more you mature and get over the fear of your trauma. He eventually faces his fears and moves back into the house as the neighbour isn't their anymore. Maybe the neighbour committed suicide over the guilt of doing such horrible things. Honestly I don't know.

So, here’s my analysis on this game.
You play a man who was kidnapped, as a kid, but managed to escape. It traumatized him so much, that he moved to the city, as an adult. He continues, though, to have nightmares and harsh memories about the neighbor. After being evicted, for reasons unknown to us, he decides to face his fears and move back to his childhood home. The neighbor is long gone, but his shadow(the horrific memory of him) still lurks around.

Jay you forgot to do these things
1. After you escape the neighbor by using space, you should have stayed near the door to hear the neighbor.
2. At the end, when there's the exit and the house, you should really walk to the house. The neighbor and shadow guy are there, and it will give you more background information on the ending

I think that he was either remembering what happened as a child or when he used to live in that house or you're playing as the neighbor. It's kind of confusing but the goddamn kind of look like the neighbor has a adult and that's when he built the house
Jay, the little kid you were protecting from the shadow is you as a kid. Don't you remember act 1 when you were a kid and escaped from the neighbor? That's why you moved away to another place and lived in an apartment. And when you were getting evicted you got back to your old house, and had a nightmare about what happened to you as a child. At least that's what I got from the story.
And the creators said that the alphas weren't even 40% of the full game, so what the fuck? I didn't except it to end there, that's too short!!

The songs you played to make the trees shrink, were those the actual songs?
I think its about a child molester (the neighbour) and your character was one of his victims. The first act is clear, before you got kidnapped by the neigbour but after that he gets so traumatized that his memory is effected by it, like he confuses stuff. The monster is the fear he had as a kid and by fighting against it and acting as a shield for his kid version he could escape the trauma.

Jay is definitely that dude! Appreciate the effort you put into the game, even if the ending was lackluster.
Anyway, you should play Doki Doki Literature Club! I know tons of people have been saying that, but I decided to check it out for myself and was not disappointed. Not too long of a game either (4 hours?) and it's something you'd enjoy for sure. It's a game where not everything is as it first seems, give it a shot!
This game is not about a kidnapping. The neighbor had a family, and you are experiencing the POV of the kid who suffered what seems to be a kidnapping. The neighbor and his family had an accident, and the kid accidentally made his sister play and killed her. The neighbor got worried and he was trying to protect his (somehow crazy) son, cause his son it’s the only family he has. His son is getting worse with time, so he has to take extreme methods to keep him safe.

There's actually another ending instead of going through the door you go to the house and save the neighbor then defeat a shadow boss and you will know the exact secret inside the suitcase. I've seen another gamer do it called "video game news."

I feel like the dude you were playing as is the neighbor and since his house looks the way it does his going to start doing construction like the neighbor did.
the neighbors family is dead, and he kidnapped our main character and the weird shit that went down was just a dream because he had to go back to his old house with all the bad memories

I think that ending shows that the neighbour was really his father protecting him from the creature. That’s why you Truly don’t get killed or anything when he catches you. He wants you to stay away from that thing that he keeps in the basement. This is my speculation it was an open ending it should’ve been longer but overall good ending
