  • www.ted.com John Hunter puts all the problems of the world on a 4'x5' plywood board -- and lets his 4th-graders solve them. At TED2011, he explains how his World Peace Game engages schoolkids, and why the complex lessons it teaches -- spontaneous, and always surprising -- go further than classroom lectures can.

I'm so fortunate to have had him as my 4th and 5th grade teacher. Playing the World Peace Game was amazing, and to this day, I still believe Mr. Hunter is one the best teachers I've ever had.

i'm almost just as blessed as Mr. Hunter. he was my proud teacher for 2 years, and i've played the world peace game 3 times. i'm the first one to learn how to run the world peace game, and he has already agreed to pass it on to me. and even though he won't live forever, i feel like he is the greatest teacher i'll ever have.

Comments mention that this game should be in every 4th grade, but why stop there? It should be part of the entire school curriculum, so children will grow, mature and develop year after year with the game into adulthood.

Mr. Hunter you are an inspiration to educators, children, parents, and people everywhere. Your take on education teaches children far beyond skills needed to pass tests. May you continue to inspire creativity, communication, and action in children. May more educators teach in such a manner.

This is pure genius. From an educational standpoint, to social and political aspirations for tomorrow, this education experiment is incredibly successful. Teaching 4th graders critical thought and application of critical thought, without relying on textbook and having the engagement of a game, it's an achievement. I see these kids in the video footage and I know they can think, which is far more important than learning.

As a past student I can personally say that the man that you see on that stage is the same as the man that is in the classroom. I feel very privileged to have met and been taught by him. If all teachers were universally like him then I believe we really could achieve world peace.

When people I meet start talking about speeches, this is the first one I respond with. John has such an incredible respect for things that we take for granted. I've worked with dozens of community builders and they're always taken aback that a handful of then year-olds solved socioeconomic problems that even our peers haven't been able to successfully tackle. I hope, one day, to have John's wisdom and be able to pass on this learning to our next world leaders.

This should be in every school in the country. Too often schools become conveyor belts where children come in, are taught something and they go out. They learn facts, but not the critical thinking skills to apply them in the real world. This a great teaching tool that allows children to learn by "doing" and offers a chance for children to learn new ideas spontaneously. Children become engaged and retain more with this type of teaching rather than sitting at their desks and listening totheteacher

This video was posted over 3 and a half years ago.
I wonder in that time, how many teachers tried to apply it.
    What's the success rate.
One man teaching one class won't do much, but if it can be successfully replicated in classrooms across the world, maybe the next generation of politicians may have a chance of solving the real problem.

If only there were more teachers so innovative and so invested in our children. I've known only a few teachers that good but i truly believe they have changed what I am and done so not through forcing their ideas on me but through letting me gain an understanding of how the world works. Every single one of them has taught me more than all the other teachers combined and I am thankful for that. Our children are the future and if we can teach them like this we can create a better world.

    Mr John Hunter,
You are an inspiration and I wish other teacher could and would learn to open there minds to teach as special as you. We all have gifted children and if given an opportunity and placed in the right settings our little generation can and will make a large impact on out global world. You have already planted the little acorn seed which in time the mighty oak grows. There must be a way to open other teachers to what you are doing becasue little butterflies can change the world.

You don't have to dumb down anything for students. It's called scaffolding and supporting student learning. You would be amazed what children can accomplish when you actually teach and not put them in boxes because they aren't labeled gifted. Or assume they can't do something because you don't know how to teach it. Get your self efficacy up.

WOW! simply wow at last the children have a voice and not ONLY that but the children have the answers. It's sad to realize exactly how much more humane children are than we are, and that if and when we stop pacifying them with rubbish and so-called "entertainment" they manifest wisdom greater than ours, compassion deeper than ours and selflessness more powerful than the act itself. I pray that this game be taken with the seriousness it deserves. Bravo Mr. Hunter

@idiallin Kahn Academy is not about classroom games, it's about having students look at lectures at home and coming to the classroom to answer questions and do hands-on practice, mostly in math and science. This guy's approach (which I think is the best educational approach) is game-based learning.

I lived in a developing country for almost 18 years, but I moved out after that. What I learned after watching such this video is that, there's no such things happen in developing countries, which I mean the relationship between teacher and students, the high motivation to achieve something great,or even the involvement of both students and teacher. I believe that something great that might happen, if only both developed and developing country were associated in order to make a better fundamentalism in area education. world peace ;D

When I look at how passive we've become, I can't help but think that the most important thing this game teaches isn't to necessarily take the right action, as that can be completely subjective, but to take action at all. the interactivity breeds activity, it makes you involved, it makes you care, it makes it real. And it is real - so it's about time we're at least taught to treat it as such.
