I found this channel via Black Pants Legion, and I love the way the two channels complement each other. They're both covering the same history, but the different perspectives fit together to give a better picture of the whole. Please keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do. I was initially a little worried about going over the Civil War myself when it had already been done so well by the BPL, but then I realised there were still so many stories to tell within that time period. I didn't have to try and one-up them, I could find the parts of the narrative that hadn't been talked about and shed some light on them, and work together to create something better.
I agree. This is more like a TV documentary (a proper one, not the trash you usually get these days), whereas Tex is more like a public lecture by an eccentric historian. (Which is why it's presented as exactly that in-universe.)
I've always wished that one of the game corps had come up with a detailed sourcebook devoted to the Rim World's and Amaris family. Considering how important it's impact was on the history and lore of Battletech I'm sure it'd be worth doing.
Yeah, it's history is quite fragmentary. Even with all the stuff written about the Star League Civil War, the actual Republic doesn't get very fleshed out.
Most of this was part of FASA's delight delightfully over written background for the original Mechwarrior role playing game. Just for fun Google Kurita, Kerenski or Blackwatch and see where Fasa got some of this setting.
It is said that Kerensky initiated the attack on the Rim Worlds Republic with a speech; official histories note a grand dramatic call to arms, such as the man was known for, and would later be known for again in time, but actual survivors of the fighting report it was something more akin to him shouting "ANOOOOO CHEEKI BREEKI" and ordering the first regiments forward to the hammering tunes of ancient Russian classical (for the 2700s anyway) music. Yes, the SLDF invaded the RWR to the strains of hardbass. BUT OF COURSE THE COMBINE HAS SPACE NINJAS. WHY WOULDNT THEY HAVE SPACE NINJAS
I would love to cover the Jihad and Dark Ages eventually. I think there are probably a lot of folks who would be interested in the ilKhan era but don't want to slog through the previous two because of their bad reputation. I'd like to try and bridge that gap one day.
Hello Sven. It seems that many of your viewers think that Mechs are 'short'. Having been playing, off and on, for well over 35 years (actually, 39 years now), since the game's release in 1984, I can say that most Mechs range between 25 and 40 feet tall, with some of the largest topping that 40-foot mark easily (Annihilator). The venerable Atlas, itself, just HAS to be around 43 feet tall. I know this is 'bland', but really folks... just go outside and stand near a 4-story building. And then, if possible, get on top of one and look down at a friend below. This should give you some 'perspective' on Mech sizes. 3025 Fusion Engines are fairly small, given the technology. Even though much was 'lost' from the past, the factories making Fusion Engines still exist. Yeah, they are building things they barely understand, using blueprints and tooling they can barely keep operational, but they do exist and produce replacement Engines. Such an Engine takes up a large part of a Mech's torso, and thus with a little effort, we can see that Fusion Engines, especially the larger ones, can be quite 'large' on a human scale. Upwards of 15 to 20 feet tall, at least 10 to 15 feet wide and 'deep' (front to back). Remember, please, that these are 'downgraded' Engines from the Star League Era. Larger, bulkier, and less efficient than Star League Era 'standard' designs, let alone the more compact, and efficient designs that will become available after the discovery and dissemination of the Helm Memory Core.
I don't think anyone is saying they're short. Certainly the figures you're describing are matched by everything I've read. But it's just that the art (particularly the older art) so often has them 2x-5x as large as that which creates a false perception. There was a lot to talk about in the next episode so I needed to lay the groundwork. It's worth saying that Chapters 4-7 went through TONS of alterations as parts of the script got shuffled around and the breaks between chapters were moved. Originally the Coup included the rest of the battles throughout the Hegemony and not just Earth. Then the next was originally Vengeance which described Kerensky's response, up to the formation of the Dormax government within the RWR. The part with the Nekogami was originally the opening to Empire (in the first draft I left events in the Hegemony an almost complete unknown until Operation KEYHOLE) and laid all the groundwork for the invasion and went right up to the end of 2773, the chapter split being where Lib of Terra Vol.1 ends.

No, I don't think so. Where each clan attacked was determined by the opponent they wanted to fight, not because of any symbolic direction from which they would approach Terra.
I never really looked into it in detail but from what I recall it's a Canadian unit whose heritage goes back even further to a Scottish one. I think I used the former's insignia in my videos as the only images in BattleTech sourcebooks are fairly poor quality.
Jesus. The SLDF was absolutely overpowering. Over a thousand Battletech regiments…. You could level literally entire solar systems with that kind of firepower, never mind the conventional regiments.
It's mad how large the military was. The largest Succession Wars army was not even 40% of the size, and didn't even have 10% of the BattleMechs Kerensky had at its peak.
@@SvenVanDerPlank The matchup was akin to the Alamo during the Mexican-American war, only the SLDF had the situational advantage. 186 men vs 10,000 Mexican Legion troops. Compare that to what the Rim Worlds were up against, they didn’t have the benefit of defensive advantage. Orbital bombardments and nuclear weapons would have made it meaningless.
I know it's an odd thing to focus on, but one wonders what might've happened if Drago Kurita had managed to escape Amaris' forces somehow. Without him as a hostage, what might Takiro have done?
Probably nothing. His "support" was marginal and likely didn't affect the overall outcome too much, and so he likely would have sat back and watched just like everyone else. Had Drago been killed outright, things might have been different.
In the SLDF, Majs Gen are Corps commanders (of which there are 72). Generals are Army and Army Group commanders (of which there are 20 and 10). There's also several positions in High Command or various other senior staff officers that are one or the other. For whatever reason BT lore swaps Lt and Majs Gen compared to modern militaries where the former is more senior. My videos are trying to remain a relatively high level overview without getting down into individual tactics too often so I rarely ever mention anything below Col.
Well those 72 Corps commanders would be subordinate to the 20 Army Generals. During peacetime the Army Group Generals were political officers but that changed once the Uprising began, at which point they became the next step below Kerensky and DeChavilier. Other Majs Gen would have belonged to one of the Combat, Support or Logistical commands, each of which had a General or Admiral as Director. There are a few other independent groups that fell outside of all of that.
Excellent episode. Not normally one to pick apart your work but using Nerdy Overalayzed's bubbly demeanour to narrate for the brutally efficient Nekogami assassins was an amusing choice.

It's fascinatingly prescient on how it portrayed the drone warfare of today.
IMHO the founding of Royal Black Watch or Black Watch goes back to 1881. There is a straight line of heritage into the mech era.
Question, what was the soundtrack for the AEAF segment?
The first part on ground units was "The Endless War" from the Kestrel Lancers DLC, second part on the navy was "Remembrance" from MechWarrior 5.
@@SvenVanDerPlank Thanks, I recognized Endless War but not the other.
@@SvenVanDerPlankThat makes sense, TY.
there seems to be a plethora of maj generals in all of this lore
In the SLDF, Majs Gen are Corps commanders (of which there are 72). Generals are Army and Army Group commanders (of which there are 20 and 10). There's also several positions in High Command or various other senior staff officers that are one or the other. For whatever reason BT lore swaps Lt and Majs Gen compared to modern militaries where the former is more senior. My videos are trying to remain a relatively high level overview without getting down into individual tactics too often so I rarely ever mention anything below Col.
@@SvenVanDerPlank gotcha. kerensky was directly in charge of those 72 maj generals then?
Well those 72 Corps commanders would be subordinate to the 20 Army Generals. During peacetime the Army Group Generals were political officers but that changed once the Uprising began, at which point they became the next step below Kerensky and DeChavilier. Other Majs Gen would have belonged to one of the Combat, Support or Logistical commands, each of which had a General or Admiral as Director. There are a few other independent groups that fell outside of all of that.
Do the SDS Drone ships have a Jump Drive?
Yes, the Caspars and Pavise do, but it requires a crew to be onboard in order to use it. Drones cannot jump by themselves.
What is the music you end the history videos with?
"A Second Life" from the MechWarrior 5 soundtrack.
@@SvenVanDerPlank Thank you so much!
Excellent episode. Not normally one to pick apart your work but using Nerdy Overalayzed's bubbly demeanour to narrate for the brutally efficient Nekogami assassins was an amusing choice.
If you ever want another guest voice for any of your vids, hit me up. Be glad to help.
Thank you for offering, though I think I'm more or less covered now. Got everyone arranged for the final three chapters.
@@SvenVanDerPlank I meant more for somewhere in the future, I'm sure you have the lined up for a while. But if you ever want a different one, the offer is there. 👍
