It would have been hilarious if there was a insert of Garnt and Sydney in their big queen suite, classical music playing in the background and they are laughing at peasants . It's weird, but I always see french fries at Japanese business hotel breakfast buffets. What I think the history is is that the hotels started serving them in place of hash browns or other breakfast potatoes because they also go with some western-style dinners, so it's one less reciepe to learn. Fancier hotels actually will have real hash browns these days, but they'll still have the fries because Japanese people got used to it before the hotels realized they weren't authentic.
I just moved to Japan as a JET and we had a pretty similar experience with a few key differences. Our quarantine lasts for TWO WEEKS but we can move freely throughout the hotel but are STRONGLY discouraged from dining at any restaurants or congregating in groups to chat. There's a garden we can go to for some fresh air but masks MUST stay on. The food they give us is uhh... Well, lets just say I've chosen to buy almost all my meals from Lawsons. Anyway, glad to see you made it back to Japan Connor!
Could you please tell me, if I'm travelling to sendai (rented flat), can I quarentine in Sendai or do I have to stay in tokyo where I'm going to be landing until my quarentine is finished ?
@@halamk657 It really depends on what country your coming from and how far away your flat is from the airport. Since Sendai is not very close to Narita / Haneda I would guess that you'd probably have to quarantine in a hotel near the airport but every situation is a little different. I got quarantined at a hotel in Malaysia for 14 days last year. My room has no windows so naturally I went insane after a week of seeing no sunlight. Eagerly waiting for food is definitely relatable.
I'm just imagining the hotel staff just walking by throughout the day and just hearing a man talk to himself all day, while randomly crying and laughing at times.

I've now seen a few videos of people who actually had to stay the full 14 days on various countries and I'm not sure how they managed to stay sane when Connor already started showing first signs of madness after a bit over 3 days.
Imagine solitary confinement for life. No internet, no window with a crappy view of the city even, knowing you'll never get out alive. Honestly, I think if it comes to that convicts should have the chance to choose between solitary and death row.
72 hours is an alarmingly small time to keep people in hotel quarantine, they'll keep bringing in more cases and many more big infection waves especially as they start to re-open. I've done 14 days hotel quarantine here in Australia, and in lockdown for many months last year, and quite a bit this year where it's illegal to leave your property for anything but medical treatment, exercise or grocery shopping and had to be within 5km. I've also had to self-quarantine 2 times in my room, once for 7 days cause the hospital forgot to inform me of my COVID test result (but the QLD health department wouldn't let me leave quarantine conditions until I had the written proof of a negative). But at least by doing this my state has reported no deaths from COVID in the past 6 months, and only 7 since the start of the pandemic. If we get more than a few cases, say 5 or 6 in one day we'll send the state, or at least the city and the 100km radius area around it into full lockdown to stop it quickly
Aside from the bureaucracy, Japan's hotel quarantine seems pretty good. 3 days is nothing compared to the mandatory 14 days in many countries, some of which actually charge you for it (because unless its essential travel, its at your expense). The hotel room, whilst small, seems quite decent.

I know of people with children that had to spend 3 days in a really small room without any space to play and we on the other side got quite a big room with way more space then needed (with 1 child, the neighbours even without any children). It's purely based on availability of the hotels and rooms that they block for the quarantine

Coming back from the UK to HK was an absolute nightmare. I went home twice, once for Christmas and another for Summer holidays. First, you would have to do a test at Heathrow before you boarded (you had to be at the airport at 6 since they may have delays), then they would but a tracking tag on your wrist (they didn't do this the second time) and give you a sandwich and some bottles of water because you would have to do another test at the HK airport because you weren't allowed to leave if you didn't have your results (we had to sit at a closed off section of the airport for 9 hours the first time, the second time was better, around 5 hours but still) then after you receive your results, then you go through customs get taken to your quarantine hotel. The second time was quite similar because you would have to line up at your respective queues according to which hotel you booked (which you pay for yourself) and then you would have to stay in your hotel room for 14 days straight (21 the second time). You would do 3 tests throughout the quarantine by officials every week. But they would still give you food outside the door and they would ring your doorbell notifying you the food is outside, for trash you get trash bags and you're allowed to leave the filled bags outside at 2 everyday, you were allowed to get things from your family/friends through the staff and you're allowed to get takeout so yeah I could get McDonalds :)

I did the full two weeks in a hotel!! It was hell, but also my hotel was an “apartment hotel” so it was equipped with a kitchen, and was roughly the size of a small 1DK, and bath/toilet were separate. If I had to spend the two weeks in a business hotel I’m pretty sure I would’ve jumped out of the window hahaha

How to tell the level of implicit trust in Japanese society: the hotels actually trust you with full hotels of shampoo. In America those would be gone in 30 seconds.
I've been in a quarantine hotel last year when I came to austraia for uni, I was there for 14 days but the rules are a lot more loose compared to your experience, we even got a "social area" with a POOL (yes you can go swimming) for us travelers if we ever feel like we need some fresh air lol, all we have to do is call the front desk for reservation and a police will come and walk you there. I also got two queen beds. I was by myself. imagine you're by yourself in a room with two huge beds. It's pretty weird. But the experience was better than fine, the food was good, they got a menu that changes every three days you can pick what you want to eat, and everything is free, it was like going on a vacation without the going outside part.
I think part of it is because we have to have a vaccine before any sort of air travel, but I dont think that is the case for the UK(could very easily be wrong tho, didn't look it up). The other option is due to the close relationship of the US and Japan, including many Japanese mega corporations having their international headquarters in the US.
I just got shocked by the fact that the Japanese government is providing quarantine hotel rooms and food for free. Meanwhile before August 9th of 2021 in Canada, you had to pay for the quarantine hotel rooms and food out of your own pocket.

Keep in mind he has a Japanese address. He says he can do the rest of his quarantine at home if he was negative. From what I saw it's the same in other countries if you have an address in that country you might be able to do it at home
Yeah no, theyre looking at changing it soon but in Australia, especially NSW, regardless of if you are Australian or have an Australian residence you still have to hotel quarantine for over a week

When my son was born, I wasn’t allowed to leave the hospital room with him, and I started going stir crazy in less than a day. And that was pre Covid, and with my wife and son in the room with me. And the room was decent sized. I can’t imagine being confined to a closet for 3 days.
Don't underestimate the psychological challenge of confinement, with no fresh air, no human contact, and no room to move. Take away the window, clock, and internet and you've got yourself a nice little torture tank there. I would have probably disassembled the bed to get it out of the way to have room to do floor exercises.
I always thought of myself as an introvert who isn’t too bothered by having a lack of freedom to go out where and when I want. But even being in a regular lockdown here in Australia can be tough, and I’m one of the lucky ones who is an essential worker. Aside from work, I can only really go out to my local shops to buy essentials, and there’s hardly anything exciting at my local shops. Luckily our lockdown is supposed to be over in a few days or maybe tomorrow if we’re lucky. But this video made me reflect on how much tougher it would be to be confined in a room or your home and not be able to leave in like 14 days. I felt for you.
I find it very interesting. When a new video game I am really excited for comes out and I take a few weeks off of work to play I wont step a single foot outside for 14+ days and be fully content. Something about being told I CANT go outside makes my brain very unhappy. Overall as a very introverted hermit staying indoors has been fine but it was surprising that it messed with my head for the first few months last year when everything went crazy.

Just watched this video today. Good one! Quarantine is quite the experience. I spent 14 days in a very small and pretty crappy hotel room last year when I returned to Shanghai. The weirdest days of my life. Banging on the door in the morning, lunch and evening for COVID testing and sad meals. Will be nice when we can travel freely without quarantines. :-)
This really puts into perspective how taxing a Prison, especially segregation would be. Like you're in a nice looking room, with decent food and the ability to atleast see outside. And it feels so restricting even for just 3 days. A prison is even worse and could go on for years on end. It's weird to think about.
Hence solitary confinement being a human rights violation. But like with any other shit like non-existing healthcare the US doesn’t care about human rights.
At least inmates have done something to be there. Think about what pure hell we put animals through by keeping them confined or on leashes or in cages, etc. when those furbabies never did anything wrong and deserve all the best in the world.

Yes, they need exercise and stimulation, but all of those can be done safely inside or on a leash when outside. Having a furkid means we are responsible for their safety and wellbeing. Allowing them outside off a leash is the exact opposite of that. Please never have pets if you refuse to do right by them and keep them safe.
The most fun place I been in my army service was the covid-19 Recovery Hotel a place where everybody that got tested positive for covid-19 went, and it was one big place where we sat together and just chill together for 10 days, it was so fun then I'm looking back
Those moments can be very special... Something about the shared trauma can really bind people together. When I was in college some friends and I got stranded on campus during a hurricane, so we were put into a stadium of sorts. It was awful, terrifying- the eye of the storm passed directly over us. The first floor of the building we were in flooded (imagine: no power, water to your mid calf, and guys peeing in the dark so you know that water was filled with pee. It smelled awful!), light fixtures were shaken loose during the night... And yet I made lifelong friends that night. We played cards, played drinking games where we substituted sodas for booze, we told stories and talked about everything and nothing. It was terrifying, it was tedious at times, it was hilarious and sad and stupid... That was almost 30 years ago, and it still ranks up there among my favorite life experiences. Sometimes you can make the crappiest experience into something valuable, into something worth doing.
How the US wasn't listed on the quarantine list is just insane...unless they're simply not allowed to visit Japan at all? To be honest I haven't bothered trying to keep up to date on the matter for quite some time. All I care about is when we can finally visit Japan (and other countries) in a normal fashion.

Nobody is simply allowed to visit Japan as of the moment. You can only enter if you are a resident or you have visa. People who come from certain states of the US had to do the 3 day quarantine until very recently but that was changed and they only had to do 14 days of home quarantine.

@@iangeiger1652 While the US is doing better than the UK with per capita new cases (31 per 100,000 vs 51 per 100,000), the absolute figures are 98,000 cases vs 39,800 cases, so no, they’re not “the same amount”.
Probably because, like much of Europe, Japan's government doesn't have a real firm concept of how BIG the USA really is. We've got heavy problem areas, but I suspect that if you boil it down to per capital by country we squeeze in, and if you try to point out places like Florida they're thinking of a desolate swamp the size of a moderately large city, not an area that could be shown on a map of Japan in the same scale.

Since Sendai is not very close to Narita / Haneda I would guess that you'd probably have to quarantine in a hotel near the airport but every situation is a little different. As someone who's done their fair share of hospitalization and quarantining, this seems like an amazing experience. You're telling me you get to keep your clothes and pens???
I've now seen a few videos of people who actually had to stay the full 14 days on various countries and I'm not sure how they managed to stay sane when Connor already started showing first signs of madness after a bit over 3 days.
Imagine solitary confinement for life. No internet, no window with a crappy view of the city even, knowing you'll never get out alive. Honestly, I think if it comes to that convicts should have the chance to choose between solitary and death row.
72 hours is an alarmingly small time to keep people in hotel quarantine, they'll keep bringing in more cases and many more big infection waves especially as they start to re-open. I've done 14 days hotel quarantine here in Australia, and in lockdown for many months last year, and quite a bit this year where it's illegal to leave your property for anything but medical treatment, exercise or grocery shopping and had to be within 5km. I've also had to self-quarantine 2 times in my room, once for 7 days cause the hospital forgot to inform me of my COVID test result (but the QLD health department wouldn't let me leave quarantine conditions until I had the written proof of a negative). But at least by doing this my state has reported no deaths from COVID in the past 6 months, and only 7 since the start of the pandemic. If we get more than a few cases, say 5 or 6 in one day we'll send the state, or at least the city and the 100km radius area around it into full lockdown to stop it quickly

Aside from the bureaucracy, Japan's hotel quarantine seems pretty good. 3 days is nothing compared to the mandatory 14 days in many countries, some of which actually charge you for it (because unless its essential travel, its at your expense). The hotel room, whilst small, seems quite decent.
But it‘s based on luck, could be as small as a shoe box as well ;-)

Coming back from the UK to HK was an absolute nightmare. I went home twice, once for Christmas and another for Summer holidays. First, you would have to do a test at Heathrow before you boarded (you had to be at the airport at 6 since they may have delays), then they would but a tracking tag on your wrist (they didn't do this the second time) and give you a sandwich and some bottles of water because you would have to do another test at the HK airport because you weren't allowed to leave if you didn't have your results (we had to sit at a closed off section of the airport for 9 hours the first time, the second time was better, around 5 hours but still) then after you receive your results, then you go through customs get taken to your quarantine hotel. The second time was quite similar because you would have to line up at your respective queues according to which hotel you booked (which you pay for yourself) and then you would have to stay in your hotel room for 14 days straight (21 the second time). You would do 3 tests throughout the quarantine by officials every week. But they would still give you food outside the door and they would ring your doorbell notifying you the food is outside, for trash you get trash bags and you're allowed to leave the filled bags outside at 2 everyday, you were allowed to get things from your family/friends through the staff and you're allowed to get takeout so yeah I could get McDonalds :)

It was hell, but also my hotel was an “apartment hotel” so it was equipped with a kitchen, and was roughly the size of a small 1DK, and bath/toilet were separate. I've been in a quarantine hotel last year when I came to austraia for uni, I was there for 14 days but the rules are a lot more loose compared to your experience, we even got a "social area" with a POOL (yes you can go swimming) for us travelers if we ever feel like we need some fresh air lol, all we have to do is call the front desk for reservation and a police will come and walk you there.
I also got two queen beds. I was by myself. imagine you're by yourself in a room with two huge beds. It's pretty weird.
But the experience was better than fine, the food was good, they got a menu that changes every three days you can pick what you want to eat, and everything is free, it was like going on a vacation without the going outside part.

I think part of it is because we have to have a vaccine before any sort of air travel, but I dont think that is the case for the UK(could very easily be wrong tho, didn't look it up).
The other option is due to the close relationship of the US and Japan, including many Japanese mega corporations having their international headquarters in the US.

I just got shocked by the fact that the Japanese government is providing quarantine hotel rooms and food for free. Meanwhile before August 9th of 2021 in Canada, you had to pay for the quarantine hotel rooms and food out of your own pocket.

When my son was born, I wasn’t allowed to leave the hospital room with him, and I started going stir crazy in less than a day. And that was pre Covid, and with my wife and son in the room with me. And the room was decent sized. I can’t imagine being confined to a closet for 3 days.

Don't underestimate the psychological challenge of confinement, with no fresh air, no human contact, and no room to move. Take away the window, clock, and internet and you've got yourself a nice little torture tank there. I always thought of myself as an introvert who isn’t too bothered by having a lack of freedom to go out where and when I want. But even being in a regular lockdown here in Australia can be tough, and I’m one of the lucky ones who is an essential worker. Aside from work, I can only really go out to my local shops to buy essentials, and there’s hardly anything exciting at my local shops. Luckily our lockdown is supposed to be over in a few days or maybe tomorrow if we’re lucky. But this video made me reflect on how much tougher it would be to be confined in a room or your home and not be able to leave in like 14 days. I felt for you.
I find it very interesting. When a new video game I am really excited for comes out and I take a few weeks off of work to play I wont step a single foot outside for 14+ days and be fully content. Something about being told I CANT go outside makes my brain very unhappy. Overall as a very introverted hermit staying indoors has been fine but it was surprising that it messed with my head for the first few months last year when everything went crazy.

Just watched this video today. Good one! Quarantine is quite the experience. I spent 14 days in a very small and pretty crappy hotel room last year when I returned to Shanghai. The weirdest days of my life. Banging on the door in the morning, lunch and evening for COVID testing and sad meals. Will be nice when we can travel freely without quarantines. :-)

Leashes are meant to keep both them and other animals (including us) safe, which is literally our RESPONSIBILITY. Domesticated dogs and cats are not their wild cousins. Yes, they need exercise and stimulation, but all of those can be done safely inside or on a leash when outside. Having a furkid means we are responsible for their safety and wellbeing. Allowing them outside off a leash is the exact opposite of that. Please never have pets if you refuse to do right by them and keep them safe.

The most fun place I been in my army service was the covid-19 Recovery Hotel a place where everybody that got tested positive for covid-19 went, and it was one big place where we sat together and just chill together for 10 days, it was so fun then I'm looking back
Those moments can be very special... Something about the shared trauma can really bind people together. When I was in college some friends and I got stranded on campus during a hurricane, so we were put into a stadium of sorts. It was awful, terrifying- the eye of the storm passed directly over us. The first floor of the building we were in flooded (imagine: no power, water to your mid calf, and guys peeing in the dark so you know that water was filled with pee. It smelled awful!), light fixtures were shaken loose during the night...
And yet I made lifelong friends that night. We played cards, played drinking games where we substituted sodas for booze, we told stories and talked about everything and nothing. It was terrifying, it was tedious at times, it was hilarious and sad and stupid... That was almost 30 years ago, and it still ranks up there among my favorite life experiences. Sometimes you can make the crappiest experience into something valuable, into something worth doing.
How the US wasn't listed on the quarantine list is just insane...unless they're simply not allowed to visit Japan at all? To be honest I haven't bothered trying to keep up to date on the matter for quite some time. All I care about is when we can finally visit Japan (and other countries) in a normal fashion.

Nobody is simply allowed to visit Japan as of the moment. You can only enter if you are a resident or you have visa.
People who come from certain states of the US had to do the 3 day quarantine until very recently but that was changed and they only had to do 14 days of home quarantine.
Lol why do people keep asking this the us is handling it better then the uk they both have the same amount of cases even tho the us has 300mil more people
@@iangeiger1652 While the US is doing better than the UK with per capita new cases (31 per 100,000 vs 51 per 100,000), the absolute figures are 98,000 cases vs 39,800 cases, so no, they’re not “the same amount”.

As a person from Florida/U.S.A, I am honestly surprised though
I was expecting people from the United States to be quarantined. But of course we don't have to. It's dumb.

Probably because, like much of Europe, Japan's government doesn't have a real firm concept of how BIG the USA really is. We've got heavy problem areas, but I suspect that if you boil it down to per capital by country we squeeze in, and if you try to point out places like Florida they're thinking of a desolate swamp the size of a moderately large city, not an area that could be shown on a map of Japan in the same scale.
@@Iexistsomehow22 Well we have been dealing with it much better than a lot of other countries. Of course that might just be the Midwest + Texas and Florida.
