Sonny’s alien obsession just seems like a one off joke aspect of his character. Even in Scarlet Hand, it wasn’t a serious part of the plot. It was meant to be taken as something quirky and weird from an unseen character who caused so many problems at the museum. But then later writers felt pigeonholed into keeping it and they tried to make it serious. It doesn’t work that well
I feel like for a game with the Sonny Joon reveal, it was poorly done. Based on his random mentions and pop ups in previous games, I felt like a game with him would have more of a bang with it. Did anyone else feel this game was rushed?
This whole game was awful, but my biggest disappointment was that Nancy was no where near affected by seeing Sonny Joon in person. What about the final scene? Secret of the scarlet hand? Danger by design?! It didn’t even phase her

Also what sounds terrible about going to the safe puzzle palace to play games for points Bess? You would rather cross a dangerous bridge?
I haven't played it (and probably won't) but it seems as though Kiri's "revenge" would have made more sense if she was related to a former suspect or culprit (hence the betrayal) and didn't realize it until meeting Nancy. It's still a stretch but it would at least make some sort of sense
I remember not even UNDERSTANDING this game when I first played it. It’s all over the place! I guess I’d have to say that Leena is my favorite character out of everyone, and I don’t even really like her! I kept thinking I was missing something when she kept telling me to read the rule book EVERYTIME I talked with her. I looked at the rules in everyone’s tent just to see if that made something click? But she was just being weird. I’ve recently been replaying all of the ND games, and when I got to this, I remembered certain things and chose not to team up with Kiri. I wanted to see how it went if Nancy went unbiased the whole time. Unfortunately, the characters kept acting like I formed an alliance with Kiri, even though I left that conversation topic open for the entire game. As soon as that option was available, Leena made the comment about my choice to team up, and Kiri still said we had teamed up and still broke off the alliance, even though it was never there to begin with. I was disappointed because it was like the game’s conversations weren’t based on anything Nancy had said or done. But maybe I just should have teamed up, as the game was prompting me to do.
Nancy shouldn't have been on the gameshow, having to compete was tedious and felt like it was just there to fill in puzzle time. I really wish she had been called in by one of her friends to "investigate accidents" like in STFD. Investigating behind the scenes, seeing locations from a different POV, was what I really liked about older games. Then we could've spoken to Sonny more openly, explored everything without risk of getting kicked out, AND there would have been a sense of danger. It also would explain why we only saw a few people, and why those people just stood around doing nothing, everything's on hold because of the accidents! type deal. Also, when did the writers decide that making instructions to a puzzle hard to understand was a mystery? Half the puzzles I didn't even try (looked them up) because the language used in the instructions was unclear to an opaque degree. I just played this and I was so disappointed in Sonny! Nancy never mentions that she's been tracking him for 24 cases or whatever. I thought his character design and voice was pretty great but we barely get to interact with him. All that said, I really only enjoy an ND game when it's scary. Haunted scary like MHM or threatening scary like STFD, just give me scares. There was no tension in this game and I was so bored. I had to rant, lol
Honestly I was so excited when I read Sonny would be in it since hes been around so long so it was kind of a disappointment. On top of that right when I read the rule about injury I just knew George would be hurt
I've only played this game once and don't remember it that well. But I do recall wishing I'd been able to talk to Sonny about past locations, just like you mentioned. And I also thought HER made him look so weird... why is his hair purple? And what about his back story? Why did he keep bouncing from place to place, so many times that Nancy herself even finds one of his notebooks or something in one game and says to herself that he really gets around? I need information! But yes, that's really all I remember. After watching this video and reading the comments, it sounds like it may be a "play one time" game, whereas most of the others I've played at least five times each. I do have to throw in here that I love Bess's outfit, though. :D I'd totally wear that! Also, your sin for her staring at a cow was hilarious!
While I love the setting and the challenges themselves, the characters in this game made me feel really annoyed or entirely confused. Or both! Often when I went away from a conversation I was more confused than when I started and that's if I remembered what Nancy originally asked them. xD I don't hate this game it just really confuses me. XD Also I'm surprised you didn't pop in a joke about how the announcer is almost certainly Toni from ASH. xD
this game was so bad. all the sins of all the other games put together is still better than this game. you can get away with a bad story if the game is fun and interesting to play! this game was boring, full of plot holes, ANNOYING, and a big let down for those who have followed the lore and loved finding sonny joon references as a little wink from the developers
At 17:00, "slate" probably refers to TV show biz lingo. At the beginning of an audition, "slating" is a process in which actors provide basic info on the piece they're about to perform.
The scattered medallion (yes, the misspelling was on purpose. The game was supposed to shatter our expectations but its scattered plot was more than disappointing) was pointless. I think HER were trying to capitalise on Sonny. Other than Sonny, who wasn't remotely as interesting as I thought, this game was completely pointless. Thankfully, Sea of Darkness was a huge step up. At least from this. Compared to some older games, Sea is still average.
#53 - just like Krum catching the Snitch, but losing the match 😂 ugh this game was messy and disorganized. I didnt enjoy my first playthrough when it was released, and I'm sad it has 0 replay value because it's one of the few games you can play on a Mac.
How I feel when I play this game: “EVERYBODY IS A LOSER! EVERYONE LOSES! YOU ARE ALL LOSERS! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR PLAYING THIS GAME- YOURE A HUGE LOSER NOW! GO HOME!”
Great work on the video, Michael!! The writing for this game was so awful, I cringed almost every time a character spoke. There were *constant* non sequiturs in the dialogue; none of the characters talked to each other the way actual people would. And all of your end-game rants were spot-on. Ughhhh, such a huge disappointment.
Wow, this game was way worse than I thought. 76: To be fair, her sleeping could be justified in game due to her injuries. As I recall, she hit her head on rocks twice, so she could have a concussion, if they didn't already say that, or she was on some kind of painkillers. The larger question is why she wasn't transported to a proper HOSPITAL. Oh wait, it was because Sonny hijacked the show. 77 *squints* I want to say it's a battery icon, and a low battery icon at that. 117: I'd say Kiri's pretty far from normal, or sane. XD Ah, and a flaw of your own. You had "191-200," and then went to 200 again. Looks like your count is off by 1. XD I'd also add on a few points for 1. Grandpa Jin (and the plot's) extreme *pretentiousness* in its ideas and references, without substance to back it up. 2. Sonny's arc of finding self-worth (a look at his reaction to his running gag of having every job and getting fired from it) being undercut by him doing *nothing* on this quest meant to *prove* to Sonny that he was worthwhile and not a useless screw up. His resolution at the end is hollow and just reinforces his uselessness as a person and that his grandpa really is a *massive* jerk for doing that to the poor kid. Actually, make that four points, just because that's really messed up. 3. Comparing the pathetic light up toy to the Antikythera Mechanism. The latter is a ancient work of mechanical and mathematical genius that would be hard to replicate even now. This light up toy isn't in the same league. Or the same city. 4. Sonny putting George to *mechanical* work when she's in recovery, nearly died, and has a *concussion.* Research, maybe doable, but mechanical work? Seriously though, this was a great and hilarious video. You're stinger was spot on too. Thanks for putting this up.
This game sucked it should have been you got a letter from sunny telling you to find him on a island or something just to make the game interesting. And more in depth characters to make the story go forth instead of a stupid game show with stereotypical characters and no challenging puzzles that are just there to make the story go forward. So I hope that in the mere future they will have more detail in the next game especially because we've been waiting for two years.
Only two more games and then the main series is over for now. I hope you do the Dossier games and Secrets can kill remastered, those I would love to see (and I have the feeling you’ll find at least one certain thing right in secrets can kill remastered, if you know what I mean ;))
Looking past the alien nonsense, this was a beautiful game with bright, calming visuals. Learning about plants and picking them was fun. Also, I think the artists spent quite a bit of time drawing new settings for the many stages of the competition and we keep getting taken to a variety of places with different, gorgeous geographical landscapes. For how badly this games is received, I suppose I lowered my expectations so low that I enjoyed the game. I was really surprised at the number and quality of the landscapes they designed, especially at the end. The things we had to do weren't monotonous and there was a decent amount of variety there too. Wasn't bored with this game. Definitely beats games like LIE and HAU for me.
The thing that upsets me most about this game was that they clearly wanted it to be a big deal, especially for the Sonny reveal that they seem like they were working up to for years (at least since TMB), but then the execution was just... Sloppy. Half of these sins are: these rules/gameplay don't make sense, no one is paying attention to the rules, or typos/messed up sound cues/inconsistencies. Why build it up like they care so much and then whiff it on dumb mistakes like that? My other big issue is I think the choice to let the location of the game be picked by a contest winner really, really hurt it structurally-speaking. All the characters & puzzles had to be transplantable to anywhere on the list, so there was no sense of place or uniqueness at all. This game literally could have taken place anywhere, with different character accents, which was the point. DDI only happens in the San Juan Islands, SHA needs that old west backdrop, even CRE is at least suited to a laid back Hawaiian island. MED... not so much.
This game is atrocious, but I have to say that Sonny Joon was honestly the best part of it. I wish he’d been in more games as an active character, he’s hilarious.
I can’t help but wonder whether the Nancy Drew games have decreased in quality or if I’ve simply grown too old to really enjoy and see “the magic” of these games. Curious as to what other people think! Also what is everyone’s favorite game? I think mine is Haunted Carousel. It was my first ever ND game :)
My favorite is a three-way tie between Treasure in the Royal Tower, The Final Scene, and Secret of the Scarlet Hand. I agree they aren't as good as they used to be. The older games were more story-based with puzzles that complimented the stories. The last few games have been "let's squeeze in as many puzzles as we can" and most have nothing to do with the story. You really can't beat the older games.
hansbmd20 you nailed it. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why I haven’t enjoyed any of the new games lately, and honestly the storylines and the puzzles all fit together. Also, loved Treasure in the Royal Tower too! It got pretty challenging at times, but was deeply enjoyable. I never got to buy The Final Scene, so I never played it. But I liked scarlet hand too! It was extremely hard without the guide though. The curating the audio clips with the exhibits? So hard!
I don't think this part was THAT bad, for me it wasn't painful to play even though I don't care abou Sonny or alien thing. But I can see why people don't like it. Most of the puzzles are just wasting player's time. Culprit is a culprit because there's supposed to be a culprit (are we detectives or not? :D) and doesn't have a clear motive. Maybe plot of this game would be better if it was just about sabotages OR just about aliens, but I don't know...
I actually loved this game, but I can see where people are coming from. The game doesn't focus much on the mystery aspect unless it relates to Sonny, hence problem 94; "The game mistakenly assumes I care about aliens." For me, it was really good and really bad at the same time.I think it's because Sonny is my favourite character and I'm obsessed with the theory that aliens exist. Actually, this game is what really kickstarted my interest in aliens and it became a big part of my life. I thought Sonny's character arc was done pretty well. However, the ending was completely nonsensical and actual gameplay was boring at times. For me, it was Sonny and Patrick that saved this game big time. But that's just my opinion. Now that i think about it, it must be pretty painful to play this if you don't care for aliens or Sonny's character.
I am interested in playing a lot of the other Nancy Drew games (particularly the 'haunted' ones even though I usually hate it when games or shows tank a good ghost story with a rational explanation). This one just looks awful
Thornton Hall is good. Many of the Nancy Drew games leave a small amount of room for you to think, "But wait... even if this person is the culprit, how did..." and you realize the haunting was partially true.
I don't get the hate for this game. Is it the best? No, and many things admittedly don't make sense, but I don't mind replying this game at all. Personally, I find Labyrinth of Lies the worst ND game. I've been playing through the games again for the umpteenth time, and when I got up to LoL, I decided to skip it. It just doesn't have much reply value to me. At least SM has pretty scenery to look at.
When will you show literal gameplays of your Nancy Drew games? What's the point of calling yourself The Nancy Drew Guy if you don't show anymore Nancy Drew gameplays? I see every other game except Nancy. I'm stuck looking at the ones you already played. Please make more with Nancy. And not just the Everything Wrong With videos... 😞
There hasn't been a new Nancy Drew game in 4 years and the new one is due next spring. In the mean time, he does still play them. He does livestreams and speedruns every so often. He's doing something different to pass the time and to mix it up a little.

Mine is Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon. I have the order of events practically memorized!
You really can't beat the older games.
bouncy trouncy oh man! That one is one of my favorites too! I used to mess up the burger orders just to keep making a bunch of them :)
hansbmd20 you nailed it. So hard!
@@hansbmd20 My Favorite Games are Message In A Haunted Mansion and Treasure In The Royal Tower
This game sucked. It could’ve been so cool but the story was rushed and the dialogue didn’t make a lot of sense
This is amazing
I'll put it this way it's a nancydrew gamemystery only without the mystery part, and a plot that makes no sense whatsoever,
WHY ARE PUPPIES SO CUTE?
I actually loved this game, but I can see where people are coming from. The game doesn't focus much on the mystery aspect unless it relates to Sonny, hence problem 94; "The game mistakenly assumes I care about aliens."
For me, it was really good and really bad at the same time.I think it's because Sonny is my favourite character and I'm obsessed with the theory that aliens exist.
@@kevinwonnacott5150 Ghost of Thornton Hall is TERRIFYING
@@kevinwonnacott5150 I still think that The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is A cheap Copout I still believe that The Ghosts are all real
this was definitely my least favorite nancy drew game.
I luv these vids
Don't forget Nancy's mom jeans 😂
Yes! I hated this GAME!
You know ancient alien theorist believes
This is the only Nancy Drew game I ended up cheating the ending for, because, I couldn't figure out the clues. Worst Christmas ever!
I love Sonny. He's m favourite. That loser ending at the end is really funny. Hooray! We're all losers. We can all go home.
Lol this is great
This game was so scattered and poorly executed. Thankfully it was only a waste of..maybe 3 hours. 20+ hours of gameplay, yeah right!
The ending rotfl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the announcer was gay for george CONFIRMED
this was 400 times worse than whatever you think the 2nd worst nancy drew game was. so so so bad. wonder if MID will win the new crown?
Bess has a crash on Sonny June
Ugh. This game really was so bad.
Wait, Nancy has met Sonny Joon before this game? (9:10)
By "seen" Sonny Joon, Michael meant that Nancy has seen his comics and stuff in places she's been before, as proof that he was there himself.
I never really noticed how bad this game was until this video.
I hated this game
Ugh, this is one of the worst games. There’s nothing enjoyable or redeemable.
This vid is a bit boring
Well the game was full of sin after sin after sin. This was probably the short version lol
@@Star_Jewel This entire Game is boring Nancy Drew The Shattered Medallion sucks
SakineHatsune 16VOCAL hes played all of the Nancy drew games. The next one doesn't come out until next year
There hasn't been a new Nancy Drew game in 4 years and the new one is due next spring. In the mean time, he does still play them. He does livestreams and speedruns every so often. He's doing something different to pass the time and to mix it up a little.
He can only play the same games so many times. If he just posted about those 33 games, we’d get bored.
This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I love it! Been a Nancy Drew fan since elementary and I’m now in college lol! Subscribed👏🏼
