This is simply stunning. I always go back to watch this video. There are so many other talented choir versions of this song, but there's something about this one.. Its gorgeous.
I cannot get over that this is a high school choir. The attention to blend and balance is incredible. And the intonation is simply divine, which is not at all easy to do in a song like this. Amazing job, guys.
So far the Valencia High School choir is STILL the best choir in my opinion!!! You guys are good to go on Tour I think!!!! :P Kudos to the choir!! Mezza
Comparing many of the other choirs covering this incredible song, the best I've seen so far is this performance. Very crisp where appropriate. Beautiful.
A special place on earth being led by a special choir and director in a special choral piece. I love and so very miss Valencia. It is a VERY special place!!
1:33 is heavenly, and continues on for the rest of the song. this is the best arrangement I've heard with the best vocals. The basses add so much. It's truly beautiful. hats off to whoever is doing the melody (probably an alto, haha). They've a lovely tone. 3:33 is also godly
I think y'all are crazy! Listen to the sensitivity and musicality that this choir sings with. They posses a unique and haunting blend that I really enjoyed. Their treatment of the text is gentle, not harsh like that of so many young ensembles and that's what really stood out to me. Their attention to dynamics isn't jaw-dropping, but it's certainly not bad. Pretty decent intonation as well. Brilliant performance!
I got to hear these guys 'live' this past weekend at Carnegie Hall - absolutely incredible! What a gift that evening was.... You guys are fantastic... very tight and so musical. Bravo.
No, the arrangement is a direct transcription, and it is flawless. It's a rubato tune done by a high school choir. There may be problems with pitch, blend, balance of sections, or interpretation. But the sheet music was transcribed perfectly.
Also not trying to argue... only share information from my many years as a singing teacher. Staggered breathing is used in choral situations where there is a a very long note - usually several bars. The diaphragm is a muscle. You can't expand it. Muscles can only (i)contract or (ii) relax. When the diaphragm contracts it lowers which pushes down on the stomach and intestines. You feel this as an expansion around the middle of the body, under the rib cage.
For a high school group to pull something like this together this well is quite impressive. Not so easy to listen and coordinate this well. I have heard plenty of groups not listen this well even at a college level. Keep that in mind those who are inclined to get picky.
In the version that this a cappella group is using, the parts are SSATTB. Though, the tenor splits could also be sung as bass splits, which the choir at my school is doing.
For the people who think "the harmonies suck," if you think that because of all the dissonances, they're supposed to be there. The original song was done with one voice singing into a machine to create that affect. And my a cappella choir is learing this song for solo/ensemble this year with this arrangement. I give this choir a LOT of credit for learning this, and yes, while there are some things that probably could have been better, they did it very well. This song is exceedingly difficult!
usually for vocal jazz choirs, they don't adjust mics for each person. they soundcheck to make sure they're working properly, and then they put it all at equal level. you mean someone was sticking out.
Yes it is by Kerry Marsh. The Joseph Bates arrangement is a little different. It's also only 5 parts. n this one is 6 or 7 I fprget. I know for sure it has a part for second sopranos already adding a 6th part. The bass line is also deeper than the Joseph Bates arrangment.
what are you talking about they are amazin! any high school group that attempts to do this is a great feat. and they did it with out direction! that is a great deal all in its own! but i agree keep up the good work.
Excellent blend and sound! You sound better than a great deal of university level groups I've heard try to perform this chart. Great job!

Unbelievable, Truely amazing. Once it started I couldn't believe how much it sounded like the actual song, better even. Great job.
Finally, a great arrangement. The other ones I have found never seem to shape it correctly, but here they do!
i want to shout, cry, dance, laugh, kiss at the same time... That is definetly the best choir version I saw at youtube!

@yourcall1009 for a high school, you got to give it to them, a lot of high schools can't get vocals this tight
